I was seventeen I think and I said, "it's new, it's interesting and it's better than relistening to the same tired crap you continue to listen too". Yeah, so one flatmate absolutely got it. We're still friends 'til this day. The rest of them and their mates? Unsurprisingly, I don't see them.

RIP Hamish. I will always remember you as gentle, sensitive, and cool. Thanks for playing at my (first) wedding. Your music will live in my heart forever.
From the UK.....First heard of the Clean 1990, brought "Vehicle" along with the Chills " Submarine Bells "....Those 2 bands gave so much to the world of popular indie music....criminaly under promoted..... In the UK or USA would of been drolled over an worshipped as a supergroup....Thank you for the music ....Flying nun records..
I was a big fan of the New Zealand and Australia scene back in the '80s, but somehow I missed out on the Clean at the time. This is terrific! Glad to discover it in 2025 and will investigate further. Thanks for posting this! Peace.😁
Flying Num bands were the shit, they were inspired by American bands like the Velvet Underground obviously, but it seems like just as many American indie bands from the late 80’s on were inspired by NZ Flying Nun bands. Even Jay Reatard as punked out as his music could be was listening to and being inspired by Flying Nun bands when he passed. I don’t know this but I harbor a suspicion the Dead Milkmen where The Clean fans.
I was sadly unaware about Hamish's passing until a few weeks ago, though I did hear about his sudden disappearance back in November. The Clean (as with just about everyone here) was my introduction to the Dunedin Sound, a music scene that much like Olympia has a very special place in my music taste. This one along with Diamond Shine and Point That Thing are two of some of my favorite songs to ever come out of NZ as a whole. RIP man, you really helped shape indie rock as we know it today.
"Anything Could Happen" (The Clean) joins "What Goes On" (Velvet Underground), "Roadrunner" (Modern Lovers), and "All Down the Line" (Rolling Stones) as my all-time favorites!
Unreal. I just had a hankering to disappear down the flying nun rabbithole for kicks. Had no idea Hamish had passed away. Very sad. Safe travels man..............
I’m a music nerd in the states and to me Flying Nun is what Kiwi music is. I know NZ and Australia have a rivalry but on music, the Kiwis got the Aussies best from my outsider eyes.
They are certainly considered one of NZ's best bands by people who have good taste, and want something more than the over produced, mindless dribble that's marketed to the masses. The Clean didn't want the fame and hype, that's the reason why they have remained out of the lime light so to speak. They have kept their art true and relative, it has stood the test of time and still holds its magic. Very inspiring.
Cool, been listening to the Clean for donkeys years and didn't realize he played a 12 string in this song ! Anyone interested in the Clean i would say vehicle is a good album to start with ! In my opinion they are the cream of the crop of NZ music !
Nah man I had all the symptoms of bone cancer but they couldn't find any. I did have massive transfusions and somehow elevated my white platelets from dead under 20 to normal as all fuck over a 100. Hence got released yesterday after 11 days in two wards filled with people dying from cancer, fighting cancer and recovering from bone marrow and stem cell transplant procedures. I met alot of harsh reality, humour and suffering family and partners etc. How's detox going? I know weekends can be difficult. Try and set a three day limit and then half it. Give yourself some room to negotiate lol. Insanity weather prevails my friend. You know what that means lol Anything can happen
The Clean, and the entire Flying Nun catalogue from the early 80's made up the bulk of my early 20's - back in the day (thanks to Rough Trade SF). RIP Hamish - many hours of listening joy.

The fact that this song is not known and loved all over the English speaking world is criminal. It made it to Canada, at least in my house.
my house too :P
Definitely a classic down here in NZ
live365 had stations that played this kind of music but shut down.
My House in the middle of the Mediterranean too.

NZ music was amazing in this era.
NZ was amazing in this era, not so much now with the One World Politics, Wokeness and control being forced on us.
Love the oldschool views around Christchurch. Cathedral Square in the early 80s ffs!
I’m surprised the Wizard didn’t wander into the background.
