Southampton v Man Utd First Division - Match Time Revisited (5th December 1981)

  • An exciting game with goals and controversy. There is an array of football currently on youtube but unless it's hidden somewhere under a different heading I don't believe this match is on YT. The good old days of football when tackles would fly in without players necessarily getting booked and when it was value for money and without the overpaid divas we have today. Presented by Elton Welsby and commentary by Brian Moore.

Finest disallowed goal we're ever likely to see.
If there's one thing we can give the modern game it's that the shorts aren't akin to boxers.

What a fantastic game, which Saints deserved to win. Incredible goal by Keegan. Anyone spot Danny Wallace on the bench. Southampton had some cracking players back then.

ITV currently showing season 80/81 but they never show 82/83 unfortunately, or at least they haven't done in the last few years since they started showing them during covid.

Very harshly disallowed goal. From the camera angle high up behind the goal If you freeze it at the exact moment Keegan strikes the ball Armstrong is pretty much level with Gidman and definitely doesn’t look to be interfering with play, as the ball flew straight in & he’s not in the keeper’s line of vision - maybe if it had been saved or hit the woodwork before rebounding to Armstrong to score then fair enough, but it didn’t. Although perhaps no surprise on the answer given by United legend Denis Law when asked by Elton Welsby what he thought!

Elton Welsby went on to present THE MATCH. 17 matches a season networked 1987-1992.

In the south it was Southern^s television last game before the franchise change to Television South. So I would think this was an L.W..T. outside broadcast unit with Brain Moore at the mic.

Covered by L.W.T. because the Southern Outside Broadcast Unit was being changed to the new franchise holders Television South.

Don't know if you remember, but in 1996 they wore grey v Soton and were 3-0 down at half time. They changed to blue at HT as apparently they couldn't see each other in the grey kit🤣. Match here th-cam.com/video/9gTx3DI1rUs/w-d-xo.html

Also wore all blue in the 1968 European Cup final. Regularly wore blue away at Southampton in the 80s as a third kit. I think they even wore a yellow and blue strip in around 1971 at the Dell when George Best got a hat-trick in a 5-2 win.
