    Great video, it is very important to keep 30% of the soil, 2 trees of mine died because I washed the roots.

      I am a newbie here and just repotted my first ever bonsai 3 days ago. The leaves are droopy which makes me worried. Its first ever video that mentions the important information of keeping some old soil intact. I wish I would have come across this video before. I hope my tree revives.

    • @anthonylopez4013
      @anthonylopez4013 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would you wash the roots they are meant to be dirty LOL

    • @fabulously695
      @fabulously695 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anthonylopez4013 it depends on the tree and soil if you’re repotting a strong Acer just before it breaks bud, and the old soil is very organic based, I would jet the roots clean with a hose before replacing it with an inorganic soil. Conifers usually need their soil changed gradually, especially pines that rely in certain fungi in the old soil to feed its roots

    • @GLOCK144.
      @GLOCK144. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you keep all of the old soil if it's going to a bigger pot?

    • @55sappi
      @55sappi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GLOCK144. that depends on the soil quality. Pines don't like removing all the old soil.
      Always repot after the buds are breaking.

    Great Bonsai 101 on Transfer Potting a Large Bonsai. I just started my collection a few months ago and i have killed two small bonsai's due to the fact I didn't repot with the proper soil that goes with a Juniper tree. With your tutorial, I can safely also water it properly. Didn't know the soaking part and the shaded for two weeks before setting back out to the full sun..

    What source do you recommend for information on when to repot my tree?

  • @lourenskruger3932
    @lourenskruger3932 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Jerome. Won't you get problems with root rot, leaving 20 to 30 % of the prebonsai soil, as it's going to retain more moisture for longer than the new bonsai soil?
    Thanks
    Lourens

    • @WeareTheBonsaiSupply
      @WeareTheBonsaiSupply  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Lauren’s, it is actually detrimental that you leave 20-30%. The roots of the tree are used to the black soil. That’s why we trim the roots back to the old soil level and fill in with new soil so that the roots can grow into the now soil at their own pace. The next time I’ll repot I’ll remove another 50% of the remaining black soil and the year after the remainder.

  • @melizzz924

    When should I use no black soil and just plain bonsai soil? I want to bonsái my lemon plants 🌱

    • @WeareTheBonsaiSupply
      @WeareTheBonsaiSupply  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, only use black soil in the very first repotting, but don't mix in extra black soil with bonsai soil. you just want to leave about 30% of the original black soil around the rootball and fill in the edges of the pot with fresh good bonsai soil. a year later wash out all of the black potting soil and do straight 100% bonsai soil only
