@@PhillipMcKnight , do you know if they make Gibson scale length guitars? Their website is kinda incomplete. And 👊🏼 for just measuring it and relaying the info on the scale and radius of the one you had in your hands! You'd be surprised how many times I've called a shop ahead of time and asked similar questions, and if it's not on the spec sheet in front of them...9x's outta 10, they just don't have that info., and it doesn't occur to them that they can just go physically grab the guitar and find out 🤷. Thanks for the review. You keepin it? Looks and sounds fantastic, from my house...

It's so interesting as a Brazilian to see non-Brazilian people talking about Tagima-and having good things to say, I grew up seeing my friends playing tagimas and my first acoustic guitar was a Tagima, but we've always referred to tagima as the 'low-cost-crappy-brand easy-to-buy-made for begginers' type of instrument. Seeing them improving and even having a Premium line really impressed me, happy for them!

Tagima was always a quite decent guitar. It was cheaper because importing goods is expensive due to a lot of tax. So people in Brazil had the perception it was worse than imported ones. But I owned many imported brands of entry level guitars and my Tagimas was never that far behind or sometimes I even enjoyed the Tagima ones.

Finally one international review about Tagima Guitars. I'm from Brazil, and here there's a bunch of brands which instruments are very well crafted and have a great history behind. Examples of these historical brands are Tagima and Giannini. Some companies do not exist anymore today (Del Vecchio and Snake), but his used guitars are just fantastic, with a good price too (same as old Tagima's and Giannini's old guitars).

Then again, almost all electric guitars are "retro" in a way. We have the same guitar styles still going today that started in the 1950's. Teles, Strats, Les Pauls, Gibsony semi-hollows, Gretsch hollow bodies. Even the seemingly modernistic Flying V is from the late 1950's! It's as if people today were still driving cars styled like 50's cars instead of these little sardine can boxes we have today LOL

My first bass was a Tagima B4, a model that is not manufactured anymore. It happened more than 15 years ago.
I tested many basses in the guitar store, from a very wide price range. Tagima used to create fairly cheap instruments back then, so I really wasn't expecting much. But it was very comfortable to play and sounded amazing! I sometimes still miss that yellow buddy.

Seizi Tagima is a Brazilian luthier who entered the music market in the 80s, initially he worked with guitar repairs when he decided to learn how to make them. He met Fender and "heard" that someone in Brazil had a very special guitar called "Chibson". It was your first contact with Gibson. Then a Brazilian investor, also of Japanese origin, proposed the creation of the Tagima brand. To cut costs, your partner came up with the idea of making guitars in China. The problem was that the Chinese did not know Western instruments, they only made Oriental ones. After many prototypes, the Chinese ended up hitting their hands and mass production began. Now Tagima has taken the reverse path. Chinese investors bought the brand and opened a factory in Brazil, with a capacity to build 2,000 units per month. All with legalized wood and many Brazilian woods well known here, with great sound result. I call this company "Nova Tagima" and I'm very excited about their projects.

Their entry levels are now made in China and they have intermediate and higher end and artist instruments handmade in Brazil. Kiko Loureiro (Angra, Megadeth) was probably the most famous Tagima endorsed player, but several other Brazilian players have their signature models.
I have a strat type (T-635) made in Brazil from around 2003 with big 70's head stock before Fender sued them. It was my high school sweet heart and I really like the Pau Marfim neck and it plays very well. With some pick-up upgrades it becomes a very decent sounding guitar as well. A tip for you guitar-adjusters...I'm a bench tech (for the last 55 years, and Navy-trained.) I spend my days taking stuff apart and putting it back together. Fasteners (or adjustment points) with huge slots are a common problem which is not limited to whatever you call those things Mr. McKnight found a knackered slot on, on that guitar's tailpiece. (I don't fix guitars, just electronics.) Using a penny (or whatever coin fits best) is a good trick, unless you need more force to turn the fastener than you can achieve with just your thumb and forefinger. All you need is the right-sized coin and a pair of small Vise-Grips, preferably the "miniature" size with the curved-type jaws, although the smallest size with the needle-nose type jaws will work fine too. Clamp the jaws about halfway down the coin so they grip from the edge to the center. Make sure you adjust the tool so that it grips hard enough to put dents in the coin - otherwise, it may slip off while you are using it. The Vise-Grip will provide the leverage you need to turn a stiff fastener, and you won't hurt your fingers, as often happens when trying to turn something with a coin. If this is something you do often, consider filing a flat spot on the coin's circumference, so that more of the coin fits into the slot. And that, kiddies, is why Fat Willie gets the Big Money. ;-) This one should do the trick: www.amazon.com/8-Inch-Capacity-5-Inch-Curved-Locking/dp/B00002N6RL/ref=sr_1_16?crid=MVFFDYVJI3SX&keywords=vise+grip+pliers&qid=1575499552&sprefix=vise-grips%2Caps%2C429&sr=8-16

Hi Phil, big fan from Brazil here!
I'm surprised you are reviewing a Tagima! Wow!
So, let me also tell you a secret. Tagima has historically a reliability issue due to wood treatment (some necks do really warp after some time), assembling and hardware quality, as you may have noticed. Some new models, as this one, are so expensive for us that they will become rare guitars in 5 years. This model is more expensive than a pre owned PRS SE (the "pre owned market" here tends do get more value in the instruments than the US market). Tagima do have good instruments, but most are too pricy to give a shot. Most need a full hardware upgrade, otherwise reliability has got some improvement in the past years.
I would keep this secret well kept.

I bought one to try. I always tried to play all lines of Tagimas and Seizi in brazilian guitar stores but somehow they always lack something. Lately I bought a T-850 a telecaster custom 70 alike and I liked - except for the pickups that I put a pair of Epiphone Probucker 3 pickups, and now it's fine. As guitars made of different woods I like this lineup Tagima made this year.
Some custom lines with Malagoli pickups should be nice too. Malagoli is a brazilian pickup boutique factory and have always nice pickups to offer.

I have one, it's an entry level Tagima and it really impressed me when I tried cuz it was very, very ocmfortable and it comes with a Varitone switch, all of this for a very low price.
It had some minor problems.(a tiny piece of the nut was broken, one of the screws of noe of the saddles were not good either and it had more hum than usual due to poor grounding. Plus I couldn't raise the pickups cuz there's only a piece of rubber supporting it which make some people think the pups are too weak when thay're actually kinda far from the strings). Well, I shielded the guitar myself, put a Graphtech nut, changed the screw and done! Ready to rock! Then I finally.done some mods and change the pickups and I'm really happy with the results.

Phil got the gist of the brand right away. Here in Brazil, most of our brands make copies of Fenders and Gibsons. Their market "originals" are in the acoustic area. And since rock 'n roll is almost dead here, they don't make a whole lotta guitars. Also, the competition with the US companies' chinese-made electrics is unfair. I could have a Tagima, but my Epiphone Les Paul was less expensive.

TAGIMA is a brazilian company started by Seizi Tagima, a son of Japanese, raised in brazil.
After a years in the business, the company was sold and Seizi began another company, now after his first name; SEIZI.
With Seizi Tagima out, TAGIMA's new owners brought Marcio Zaganin, the best luthier in Brazil, like a quality control and production manager.
His boutique N. ZAGANIN (his brand) guitars are the best made in Brazil ever.
TAGIMA, IMHO, became a better brand after Marcio Zaganin was involved in the process, especially when they created the MEMPHIS line, produced in China.
I have four Memphis MG32's (Made In China) from the first lot, with alder bodies and they sound incredible after I changed all the electrics and pickups.
I can't complain about the hardware. Everything is still ok.
These guitars can be bought used for like 50 dollars in Brazil.

The thing with those "exotic woods" is that over time no one knows what's gonna happen, I have a E2 signature model and the poles that hold the floyd completely destroyed that part of the wood and I barely use the trem bar on that guitar.
The original luthier/founde is called Seizi Tagima, I think he sold the brand or something and now runs www.seiziguitars.com.br.
Kiko Loureiro used to have a signature model with Tagima before joining Megadeth

    • @Rafaelguitarplayer
      @Rafaelguitarplayer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Kiko dropped tagima and get endorsed by ibanez before join megadeth. About the E2, should be a marupá body, this wood is ok for bodies, but need to be filled with a densier wood in the knive's part of the trem, to increase stability. Tagima made several E2 with that wood in the past, some are good, some don't.

That's not what he meant, it would be crazy for a $800+ guitar to be better than a $100, he meant that overall, compared with other brands he was more surprised about the quality of the low tier guitars compared to other low tiers, than their mid and high end compared to others... I have one of their entrance guitars and exactly as he said they are great quality for the price but nothing compared to the $1000 dollar line but then again if you are on that 1k price range then there are so many other options.

I love the cut out on the body. I won't call it an 'f' hole, because it's not at all the same style. I like that about it. So many hollowbody cutouts use that same basic shape. This looks as classy as an 'f' hole but has it's own style and the rest of the guitar looks amazing. The price seems right too. I'm never one to complain about small flaws like the burrs in the stop tail screw... I get you want a quality build for what you pay, but man the sound and feel will always come first to me personally over the perfection of every little inch of a guitar. but that green is REALLY nice. Nice job as usual Phil and thanks for exposing me to this brand.
