HARROGATE PARISH #35: WESTWICK
Westwick - “West Farm”
This is a short one. Welcome to Westwick, where civilisation consists of not much more than two farms and a lock on a river. Occupying just one road and a track that leads to the lock, Westwick literally means “West Farm”. It lies 3 miles west of Boroughbridge and covers just 422 acres. In 2012 the population of the parish was estimated to be just 10 people. It really is that tiny. Its population details are often included by the Office of National Statistics with those of nearby Skelton-on-Ure. The nearest villages however, are Roecliffe to the East and Bishop Monkton to the West.
Westwick was historically a township in the ancient parish of Ripon and was within the old West Riding of Yorkshire. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. It might not have a lot, but Westwick can at least introduce us to a River we’ve never come across before - the River Ure. The scenery along that river is spectacular, with waterfalls, wildflower meadows, woodlands and rugged hills.
At Westwick, Newby Hall and its splendid gardens are just above the lock where a long landing welcomes visitors and fishermen. Genuinely, there would be very few reasons to visit Westwick other than the river, but I did what I always do - and found a few other bits of interest.

Some really small ones in Harrogate. I'm off to Ellenthorpe tomorrow, that's smaller than this!
