This set almost single-handedly got me into competitive pokemon, and I’ve been following you ever since. You’ve been an incredible influence. Also, stop apologizing for the long wideo length. Hearing the backstories, emotions, and experiences during and before this match makes it even more amazing to watch. I remember watching this live and being thrilled that you won (and how crazy everyone went when they realized why you had that now-iconic expression, lmao). I first learned about you when you were a guest in one of Aaron's videos (I think it featured a Charizard Y + Venusaur Pledge team?) back in 2015, and it's amazing to see how far you've come and how much success you're experiencing. I stopped playing VGC in mid-2018 after becoming incredibly frustrated that I hadn't won any events over four different formats. I got back into Pokemon when Sword and Shield came out, and started playing VGC again last month. I remember I was on Twitch and had your channel recommended to me in the sidebar. I didn't know that you streamed, so I immediately followed. A couple weeks later, I tuned into one of your lesson/lecture streams about "getting started in VGC," and your stream was the push that got me playing again. Pokemon was a huge part of my childhood, and being able to play it to this day and meet new people who share the same passion for it is an amazing experience for me. I know I'm not really anybody, but thanks for all the wholesome and honest content over the years. Your dedication to the game and its community really shows.
53:47 When all you wanted was to be a cute little mouse but now you're in the most competitive world championship match with a flying snake god on your side against a fish with oversized fins and a roided out dinosaur.
Man, this story could go straight into the pokémon anime and it'd fit perfectly. Beating your best friend in the semi-final, the weight of everyone who helped you along the way on your shoulders, and a nail-bitingly close finals match. Except, you actually won the world championship. Loved the wideo!
Typically reaction videos are pretty dumb, but this is more of a play by play analysis. You provide more insight than someone just "reacting" to a video.
This Could be 3 hours and I'd still watch every second. The World Champ giving full detailed analysis on his championship match? We are all richer for having this. Thank you.
Totally agree, hated when he said he wouldn't talk anymore of the previous night and how they build the team :( could watch a 5 hour long wideo just about that, no match needed.
@@Skylark0000 breedibg with hacked dittos is shameful! Lolol jk but I refused to do it. I used to use friend safari dittos and had like every IV spread for every egg group lol
ya know, reading Jonathan's report, I realized how impactful a lot of the decisions made in this game were. Jonathan mentions several points where he talks about missing the obvious decisions, such as protecting in front of swords dance, when using eruption would have won him the second game, or how if he had just spent an hour to double check his spreads and fix his gengar's evs, he'd have a 25% chance to survive origin pulse in game two, meaning he'd have the ability to maintain weather control. It really is absolutely insane how much work is put in to be on that stage, and how deserved it truly is. Congrats Wolfe, I can without a doubt say that you've proven yourself.
@Booba I think Jonathan meant double-checking his spread before the tournament. You’re right that you can’t change anything about your team once you lock it in, and nobody cheats/hacks to do so; it’s impossible. But Origin Pulse is a really common move he could have calc’d and optimized his spread for, he only realized that in hindsight.
Dude I literally watches 52 minutes of this video without even knowing. Your in depth analysis of each play actually makes this very entertaining to watch.
Legit these casters are fantastic, there's not many esports where the casters can actually live explain to the audience the thought process that the players themselves are actually going through.
Wolfey: *is super methodical and strategic about avoiding RNG, making sure not to bet a World Championship on move accuracy* Aaron: I've taught you well
I'm not a Pokemon player, but these videos are fascinating to hear the background and strategy behind everything. Would definitely watch more of these!
Been a fan since just before the big blow up and I've seen all your videos now. This was kind of a big deal to watch, it feels special to have you talk us through your most career defining moment. Thank you Wolfe, that was awesome.
Honestly this was the first VGC match I ever watched, and I don't think I'd be so into the scene if it wasn't for this match. You immediately became my favorite competitor and I decided that half the reason I wanted to play was to battle against you ( as corny as that sounds) I was fortunate enough to battle you on the ladder this year where you made on hard read and smacked me, and I just use it as motivation to strive to get better because I try to set high standards for myself and I don't enjoy losing, so thank you Wolfey for really getting me into the scene that I have come to enjoy so much!
33:34 "Sorry this is probably more in depth than you guys care about but I'm gonna talk about it." - Literally me to all my friends when I talk about Pokemon, even the friends who do play. I would like to just sit and talk to Wolfey for a few hours about this stuff, I don't get bored of it.
Over a year and a half later this is one of my favourite wideos to come back to. The analysis, the gameplay, it all comes together perfectly. I’ve watched it too many times to count at this point. To me, this game encapsulates all the things I love about vgc and I’m glad that you brought a spotlight on it
I’m 33 minutes in and honestly your analysis of turn 1 just made me realise how incredibly good at Pokemon you have to be to get to a good competitive level. Wow man. Well done.
this is my fav video on your channel i watch it when i have an hour to spare i love seeing you break down your thoughts in this great moment of your life
Wolfey, no need to apologize for the length of the video! It’s really informative and the details are super helpful. You really help us get into the thought process of a champion. People who care about this stuff will watch the entire video. It’s good content!
Hey Wolfey, hope you’re doing well and having a great day! 😊 Just finished watching you win the Players Cup 2!! I’m so happy for you!! Such a truly masterful display Wolfey!! Really congratulations man!! Was rooting for you the whole way and I think I speak for all of us when I say that we’re so proud of you!! 🎉🎉🎉🎊🎊🎊
This was super helpful for learning a proper mindset in both battling and team building. I also like the retrospective on past sets, since it gives insight into your "correct" plays and the "perfect" plays, and how many times both of those align for you.
This wideo was amazing Wolfey! I love hearing about what's going on in your head, especially during these super competitive matches. Helps us new players learn and get better at the game
I could watch 100 hours of this commentary. Not only am I big entertained, but I've also been wanting to get into VGC for a few years now, but I always felt like I wasn't good enough and I didn't quite know how to reach that next level. But seeing such a high level of play and hearing the inner workings of what's happening is really useful in terms of "how do I play this game". Thanks Wolfe, I hope to see a million more wideos like this
Pokemon needs to make an anime except it’s not in the Pokémon universe but in the real world and it’s about vgc. I feel like that would be interesting.
I was fantasizing about a vgc format gym league set in galar with Wolfey as the champion recently. It's important to mention that Wolfe keeps winning against challengers with stupid meme sets that they dont know how to deal with.
i think it would be really interesting if it was still in the pokemon universe, but it was very heavily focused on calculations and numbers and uses the vgc format
Amazing video, the play by play commentary was really interesting. I love how a large part of the matchup between teams with Pokémon like Mega Gengar, Mega Rayquaza and the primals was the dynamic of Raichu vs. Manectric! The resulting Rayquaza/Kyogre lead was really cool.
I've watched this match so many times, but it's even more amazing to hear what your thought process was in the moment! Awesome wideo Wolfey, I'd love to see more wideos like this for sure
It's called a pop filter. Basically it filters out any strong "p" "b" and "t" sounds that normally sound really loud and obnoxious in recording. Basically you'll just sound really good lol
@@bepe4279 that is its true purpose in audio production. It originally was used with ribbon microphones to 'filter' out anything from entering the mechanism. The way to remove hard 'p' sounds, is to use correct mic technique. Now pop filters are used because they slightly remove those sounds, which makes it easier for amateurs.
28:32 that handshake looks almost like a painting lmao. Wolfe seems calm, collected whereas the newcomer jonathan evans is like reaching out from his seat to meet his hand, looks a bit more thrown off lol. IDK I just find the body language funny

Now I'm the person who teaches others about wise plays and preparing for the end game . THANK YOU WOLFEY !!! Can't wait to see you win worlds again !!!!!! Can't wait to see you in the finals !!!!!
I don’t usually bother commenting, but damn, I love these analysis videos. This is peak Wolfey imo. Please don’t worry about going too long, and please continue this “series.” Hearing your unfiltered thought process during these watershed matches is invaluable. I’d love to hear you talk about 2012, or really any match - whether or not you were in it - for that matter. Not only do I really just enjoy spending an hour or so with you, but these videos give me a chance to grasp VGC’s history. Thanks Wolfe, you’re awesome, and I’m super glad you get to do this full-time.
I remember watching this match, it was filled with so much controversy and I was new to the vgc field so I ended up having a horrible opinion, befause of others, on Wolfe for a long time but now I’m so glad Wolfe has started to stream and do his TH-cam career cause now I can see who Wolfe really is and appreciate him and his plays.
Could you please elaborate? I’d love to hear it. I was already a Wolfe fan boy at the time, so that might be why I don’t remember it that way, but I was also too busy with school to be paying a huge amount of attention. Was it that his misplay was read as a really risky read, and his camera glare was taken as disrespectful?
What I remember was that the first offense was just in general what Wolfe said, the meta was trash so everyone already had disdain for the two finalist. The second was the timer situation, a lot of people were accusing Wolfe of being a time staller throughout the competition even though his opponent did the same and many do it still. There was many false accusations saying he only wins through time stalling and blah blah. And then the last was the beef between the two opponents and I know a lot of the other sides fanboys ended up painting Wolfe as an egotistical snobbish person. Now that I know Wolfe, I know he doesn’t try to timestall on purpose it’s just he’s constantly overthinking things and playing mind chess over every little situation haha I love Wolfe now and appreciate him and I just wished I didn’t listen to the idiots back then because I ended up just ignoring his adventure through the years because of some dumb opinions
This battle got me into vgc and is the reason I like it so much. The story, the commentary and above all that play and Wolfey looking at the camera, that was just *chef’s kiss*
I usually don’t comment on wideos but I feel that this one deserves it. It was so interesting to hear about someone’s in depth, play by play feeling while playing in such a high stakes Pokémon match and I could hear that you were very happy to relive it. I would love to see you analyze other big matches in your career. Keep up the good work! :)
I watched the video of your Worlds win back in december 19 for the first time out of couristy cause I started playing VGC this year and wanted to know how my fav content creator achieved it. No, the in depth analysis is WHY I watch you. I can find meme teams and throwing for content anywhere. But I can’t think this deeply about the game on my own. Please do more content like this
That game made me a fan, not only of wolfe, but of vgc as well. And that was even before I knew he had such a nice personality. I loved to watch your 1h and a half wideo today, thanks for making my time at home nicer
I still remember watching this live. Even though I live in the SF Bay Area, I wasn't able to attend on Finals day due to the spectator rules. Wonder if TPCi will do that again this year (assuming Worlds doesn't get cancelled)
This was an awesome video. Your 2016 world championship match was how I found out about you originally. I watched that, then your team report, then pretty much everything on your channel. You've got a great blend of humor and insight. I've been playing Pokemon since Gen 1 and I never appreciated moves like protect or stealth rocks because they just don't matter in the story mode. You're so thorough in how you break down every turn that between you and False Swipe Gaming I've learned to really appreciate the history of competitive Pokemon and how things I thought were silly at first like Megas or Z moves could shape an entire meta-game.
I was actually there for this event! It was what inspired me to get into competitive, It took a few years to get to the point where I had enough time to start, but I'm competing in my first (unofficial) tournament in a week or so now and I owe it all to this match!
Rewatching this video now after seeing the players cup. It's, frankly, kinda scary how much you have improved after this match. The early game choices specially. I enjoy seeing you bring entirely different leads even if the first ones worked, just displaying the flexibility of the team to make it harder to predict pretty much anything even later into the game. I lost my train of thought but yea, good going and nice to see you have not reached your prime yet.
I've said it before, I'll say it again; someone really needs to just make an anime out of this at this point. It has everything. Promise with a friend to win worlds Battle with said friend in the top 4 You guys and your pokeball necklace during worlds Aaron commentating It just all needs to be an anime.

Watched it all the way through. Man, I could listen to you talk about things for EVER, honestly, you're so nice to listen to and you're always so interesting or funny with everything you say
I love watching people who are really good at something break down their thought process and then to watch you break down basically yourself was extremely fascinating.

I don't play competitively at all so thank you so much for making the huge excitement of that match accessible to me.
Actual Pokemon master loves my Pokemon comment -- makes this one of the best days ever. Thank you Wolfe Glick!

You provide more insight than someone just "reacting" to a video.

ya know, reading Jonathan's report, I realized how impactful a lot of the decisions made in this game were.
How to comp players change evs like that in the tournament tho, do they change them in legit ways or do they hack
The fact that Brandon Zheng had to finish the fucking delta episode between rounds just to unlock M-Ray mid tourney is honestly hilarious
Man had 2 years to finish it and yet he didn’t.
Dude I literally watches 52 minutes of this video without even knowing. Your in depth analysis of each play actually makes this very entertaining to watch.
Legit these casters are fantastic, there's not many esports where the casters can actually live explain to the audience the thought process that the players themselves are actually going through.

So they should just hold a vgc tournament ?
Yeah they do that bud.
Sounds like Gundam Build Fighters, great idea.
@@sirocco2810 no he's saying they should make an anime about vgc

Amazing video, the play by play commentary was really interesting. I love how a large part of the matchup between teams with Pokémon like Mega Gengar, Mega Rayquaza and the primals was the dynamic of Raichu vs. Manectric! The resulting Rayquaza/Kyogre lead was really cool.
Great video Wolfe, haven't seen it yet but it's probably true lol

I've watched this match so many times, but it's even more amazing to hear what your thought process was in the moment! Awesome wideo Wolfey, I'd love to see more wideos like this for sure
It's called a pop filter. Basically it filters out any strong "p" "b" and "t" sounds that normally sound really loud and obnoxious in recording. Basically you'll just sound really good lol
Caesar Bryant oh, I thought it was to protect the mic from spit🤣🤣
@@bepe4279 that is its true purpose in audio production. It originally was used with ribbon microphones to 'filter' out anything from entering the mechanism. The way to remove hard 'p' sounds, is to use correct mic technique. Now pop filters are used because they slightly remove those sounds, which makes it easier for amateurs.

Technically, does it do both?

BEAUTIFUL insight !!! This is the match that got me into VGC. I was a casual for 18years until I saw this match ( I'm 26 now ) . This match made me learn EVs , IVs , predictions , foresight AND hindsight . I appreciate you Wolfey . You changed my life FOREVER .
Now that I know Wolfe, I know he doesn’t try to timestall on purpose it’s just he’s constantly overthinking things and playing mind chess over every little situation haha
I love Wolfe now and appreciate him and I just wished I didn’t listen to the idiots back then because I ended up just ignoring his adventure through the years because of some dumb opinions
This game was what really got me into VGC despite the meta. Thanks always Wolfey

Wofle, amazing video. In-depth, backstory, thought process. Loved every bit of it, Please continue making videos like this too
