Michael wasn't just rank 1 in random battles a couple times, he held the no.1 spot almost permanently, mostly with a sizeable lead, for an extended period of time. I'd say it was like that for at least 3 weeks prior to the world championship, could be longer, didn't follow him then. There are more knowledgeable people on him, but he seems to win a lot of different tournaments and stuff.
Yeah, if I recall correctly, he won the yearly Smogon Ranbats tournament 5 times... no one else has won it more than twice (?) (going out on a limb here, I don't fully know, and I am a bloke on the internet, someone else can correct me or look it up)
I've watched Freezais random battles to the top series over the last few months, and Michael has been number 1 or number 2 at the top all the time - often with a ridiculous lead to number 2. Might have had the highest ELO I've seen at it, and certainly the highest win ratio.
I like this format, it is super interesting to me how many ways a turn can go and how it actually went on pro-level matches. I don't know how much editing you plan to do on this kind of videos but a suggestion: make the match screen a bit smaller, just small enough so you can stay on frame without hiding the video. This way we can clearly see you and all the information of the match. On the remaining empty space what you can do a couple of things like list the Pokemons of each player, list the active Pokemons of each one with their moves, habilites and items or just use a wallpaper kind of thing to fill the empty space. Cheers, I can't wait to see more of these!
In a German interview, Micheal said that they played against each other earlier this year. Micheal already had a similar team and he won both matches by clicking Phantom force. Which is why he assumed that Amonguss wouldn't click Spore into the Dragapult slot this time.
@@Tyufvfv Fair enough. Sohei would be risking wasting a turn by sporing that slot. But at the same time, that Dragapult proved itself to be a threat to Sohei's team before worlds, so I find that risk of wasting a turn to be one worth taking early in the game.
Michael is an absolute genius. Ive played him in many tiers on pokemon showdown in high ladder and he always plays damn near perfectly. Hes one of the few people I've always felt was "In my head". One of the greatest to ever touch this game.

This is such a fair take- I definitely would like to see Grand Finals at least be a Bo5, especially because of how fast paces VGC doubles are in this format.
@@tweakr4377 In League Of Legends World Championships, every Finals is a Bo5 despite League being basically a deterministic game. They only do Bo5s because it's exciting. I think this would be a good idea. Especially since in this case Michael had a better record than Shohei, yeah? 6/1/0 to 5/2/0? So if this match is supposed to matter more than the rest of the matches, by enough to decide the overall winner, then imo it makes sense that this match would be the biggest one, aka best of 5.
That Charlie Brown reference was so on point! Watching Michael play, I kept thinking about Alex Gomez’s Dragapult-Chien Pao combo that won him NAIC. What made that special was that Alex would always switch in Chien Pao next to Pult on the turn Dragapult would go for the Tera Blas, taking advantage of that unexpected defense drop. Ball was always in his court, not the other way around. Still an impressive showing from Michael. Who knows what would have happened if Rillaboom didn’t flinch in game 1 😮
