WTF Happened to Quantum of Solace?

  • Quantum of Solace is one of the most divisive movies in the James Bond franchise. The movie was intended to be a direct sequel to 2006’s Casino Royale, which successfully launched Daniel Craig as the new 007, but in a rush to get it into theaters within two years of that movie, the budget ballooned to make it the costliest film in the series up to that point. It didn’t help that it was filmed in the middle of a writer’s strike (history repeats itself) and had a director in Marc Forster that had never made a film of this scale before. When it came out, the short length (106 minutes) and Bourne-style action scenes were criticized, with many saying the film was a mind-numbing mess. Plus, there was a wimpy villain, a Bond girl that had no romantic relationship with 007 and a theme song people mostly hated. What went wrong? We’ll dig into it in this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, which is written and narrated by Mathew Plale, and edited by Cesar Gabriel.
Do you think Quantum of Solace is underrated? Let us know in the comments.

Writer strike was the biggest problem, but along with it there were other problems, like the movie was the biggest imitiator of bourne- heck, even casino Royale was a bourne/batman like origin story but was completely a bond film. Qos, was just bourne, be it action, editing, his relation with M/Pamela etc.
      That's the problem with qos

I loved QoS. It’s not the best Bond, but it’s a great sequel to Casino Royale, and it has one of the more true themes to date. Governments, companies, and villains alike are now fighting over water and the rights to water all over the world. This film captured what was not well known in the mainstream and talked about it.

As a 'Casino Royale pt 2" this film is great. On it's own it has it's issues, but there's 3 things that make it stand out. The arc with Mathis is great. The fact Bond doesn't sleep with Olga due to his loss of Vespa is good character growth. And finally the action scenes with Craig front and centre are great. Without this film we wouldn't have Skyfall and all the course correction that helped that become one of the best Bond films.

I honestly like this movie.. to me it just had the bad luck of being sandwiched between 2 of the best action films of the century in Royale and Skyfall... Sure, the editing is rough and reflects the time in which it was made, and the villain is weaker, but at worst it's a well-acted, passable action flick with a plot and lead that I found interesting.. It's good looking when the editing let's you take in the cinematography. Also probably my favorite score of the Craig era.

This movie gets a ton of crap and certainly had its production issues with the writer's strike, but it's my favorite Bond of the Craig era. Loved the action, loved Mathis, loved Mr. White, tight runtime, the rope fight, airplane chase, Tosca were tops and Craig's Bond was ferocious and bent on revenge. Really good follow up to Casino Royale.

You guys should do a video review on 'The Quick and the Dead'. I just watched it for the first time in maybe 20 years and it was great. All 4 leads do an excellent job. I think it was mainly sold as a Sharon Stone vehicle, as both Crowe & Dicaprio were up and comers, but she nails it. And of course, Hackman doesn't disappoint. I will say they maybe could have cut out 10 mins to tighten it up just a bit in the first half, but the last hour hits its stride and it's a great ending.

Admittedly CASINO ROYALE is about 10 minutes too long, but it's a banger. It's my favorite Bond movie that's why it's disappointing that the rest of Daniel Craig's tenure is poor. QUANTUM is a poor sequel. The idea is interesting but the execution is poor. Dominic Green is a dull villain and there's no big ending, Olga Kurylenko is a good actress but she is so muted here, the action work doesn't in places. For me, the biggest mistake was making this a follow-up to CASINO and then trying to make SKYFALL, SPECTRE & NO TIME TO DIE somewhat connected as a series. The series idea is a big mistake. Make them standalones. There's more freedom in the storytelling. Have to say though QUANTUM (for all its faults) stands up and is a more enjoyable watch than SKYFALL, SPECTRE & NO TIME TO DIE. When they reboot Bond they need to make sure they hire a good/proven action director and have some good escapist adventure stories for the character.

Massively agree. I'm not sure why Skyfall gets so much love. It has excellent performances but the actual plot is more like something from a comic book. And it is, because it's got elements ripped from The Dark Knight and the villain is just The Joker without the clown makeup.

One of my favorite Bond movies, and I'm an old grognard who started watching these films when Moore was fresh, Quite why I like it I'm not sure. I agree with Forster than Casino Royale was too long, particularly the 45 minutes of playing poker, which I understand was a popular game at the time but I had no interest. I think I like Quantum because it's different. I compare it to License to Kill, a better movie but similar in that it's not goofy, it doesn't involve taking over the world, the gadgets are practical rather than ridiculous, and the Bond girls are not just window dressing. Quantum is fast paced, it has a non-ridiculous plot that has more than a little grain of truth to it (with Billionaire's like Gates and Bezos buying up water and renewable energy production). I think the writers strike gets a lot of blame for how this film turned out, but given what the director said I doubt it would have been all that different. I don't see what's wrong with the script anyway.

As a die-hard Bond fan, a lot of this movie is practically unwatchable due to the editing and some of the choices of camera/actor placement. It’s a bit too short and I think had the editing not cut every shot into a micro-second the movie would have been about a half-hour longer. I can not-pick too and mention the random shot of M reacting to apparently being shot, the guy sweeping thin air and the facial ID function Bond uses that can be utilised by taking the picture of the back of someone’s head as other elements that leave a bad taste, as well as the cringy homage to Goldfinger and Dominic Greene having no redeeming qualities other than being a little slimy.
One of the major issues I have with this movie is I cannot justify picking it out at random when I want my fix of Bond action. It can’t really be watched without first watching Casino Royale for a little context. Most Bond movies can be watched at random as they are only loosely part of a continuing narrative.
On the plus side, the cinematography gives the movie a vibrant and classy feel - unlike the urine-soaked sepia tone of Spectre - the climactic scene in the burning desert hotel is pretty spectacular, the fact that a lot of the stunts were done practically always rings true with me and I’m probably one of the few people who actually quite like the White/Keys theme song.

The writers' strike definitely hurt this movie it is the weakest of the Daniel Craig Bond movies, but it's still watchable

I didn’t mind it. It was ok. Not great, but not bad.

12:41 yeah, an awful main soundtrack in modern Bond films, along with Madonna's Die Another Day.

I don't think the quick cuts were that bad
When done right, each shot added a new element to the scene

I appreciate this video's content, but could you do a read through before you record so the narrator doesn't sound like he doesn't know the subject he's discussing? It's pronounced Em-Eye Six, not Em Sixteen. And Co-producer's last name is pronounced BRAH-cuh-lee, not broh-KO-lee.

My dislike for this movie has lessened over the years, but I do believe they should’ve held off until the strike ended.

Imagine if QoS would have been released today. The studio would have fired everyone and ret conned it. Good thing they didnt or we wouldnt have had the best Bond movie ever Skyfall

No script. Terrible editing. Shakey cam. Skyfall was a return to form. Craigs run had highs and lows for sure. Although it seems a lot of people like QoS and Spectre. Tony Scott wouldve been a far better director for this btw.

I watched that movie and did not like it. The amount of "action" was ridiculous.

I actually really enjoy this movie, although it is far from the best and not one of my favourites.

I really enjoyed this one when I saw it in theater. But on second viewing, I definitely thought it's one of the weakest in the Craig series.
