Corrections:
IS200 sport 1999 no LSD, LSDs were found in 2000+ models.
European IS300 diff ratio = 3.583:1 and US = 3.9:1
W55 gearboxes were NOT found in the mk3 Supras, they had the W58.
I've finally decided to swap to an IS300 for that 2JZ! This will be a much more customizable platform than the 1G-FE! If you are trying to decide between these two cars, the IS300 is the CLEAR answer! You can always manual swap it if you don't like the auto box, which is exactly my plan.

My 300 doesn't have the plate to figure out if I have an LSD.
@@josafathorozco5567 All vehicles should have a VIN plate. Perhaps it’s in a different location.
Hey man....I loved the video....just one correction. The 2jz engine from the is300 is not the same one from the mk4 Toyota supra. The only similarity it has with the 2jz from the supra is the engine block and thats it. Otherwise everything is different. You can only push about 600 hp out of the is300 max without blowing the engine.
@@henriquemartins2723 Thanks for watching. Numerous people have said this, but there were non-turbo, non vvti mk4 Supras made as well as GTE Supras. The rods are slightly thicker on the non turbo, non vvti Supras though. The forged crank is also identical as well as the block. Also, 600hp is not a reliable or healthy amount of power to push through a vvti 2JZ-GE engine. 500 is the absolute max the rods will take without being put under extreme stress. In fact, I wouldn’t even push this far. I think 450hp is a more reasonable power figure. In a later video, I stated that I will be building the IS300 to 600whp, which will require a completely forged internal swap. CP pistons, Manley rods, BC 264 cams, maybe 272 exhaust cam, BC titanium springs and retainers, Borg Warner SX300 62mm turbo, etc etc. Big project, but it’ll be worth it when it’s done! 😎✌🏻

They are great cars but they lack power. With a supercharger I can imagine it would be really awesome! Stay tuned! I’ll be swapping the auto box in the IS300 for an R154! ☺️

I personally picked the IS200 because I really wanted this or the 300 but as you mentioned in your video the IS300 only came with an automatic and I specifically wanted a manual car. I honestly have 0 regrets on my decision, these are awesome cars :)

I got a facelift is200 Sportcross from 2004, its got factory xenon headlights finished in black chrome which is pretty cool. I may swap it to a 1jz but I actually quite like the fuel economy of the 1G-fe.

Great review, but when you were talking about various things on the 300, you never mentioned the mighty and rare (drum roll) IS 300 SportCross wagon. We've owned a black one for the last 5 years and love it! If you can find one, grab it, no matter what the price is because they are going up and up on resale.

I didn't mention it because it's very similar to the saloon IS300, same engine, gearbox etc. Whereas the IS200 has blatant mechanical differences :) Hope you're enjoying the SX though, they are lovely cars! Don't let it go!

@@shizukesajdm i went with the aisin ar5 5 speed transmission. Its out of a pontiac solstice/saturn sky, Colorado, polaris slingshot. Its very similar to the r154 transmission.

@@shizukesajdm the custom driveshaft was the primary challenge, I believe the ar5 sits higher than the differential so the one peice driveshaft i had made was causing bad vibration past 60mph due to the driveline angle. I had a 2 peice driveshaft made and that got rid of the vibration. I was going to go with an r154 but in my area they are a lot and I couldn't find a w55 or w58 close by so the ar5 was available and i went with that transmission. It has really made my is300 a very fun daily even at stock power.

For those of you in the US who are trying to find the plate in the engine bay that shows if you have an LSD or not the usdm market is300’s dont have the plate ours is a sticker in the drivers side door frame in the left corner it should start with B0

Had an x reg black 200 sport years ago when I was 23 and loved it. I now have an 05 silver 200 auto and I have to say I prefer it now I'm older. I do miss the lsd though.
Personally, I can stand the automatic gearbox. It’s old technology, very clunky, slow, inaccurate and not fun to drive. The semi-auto mode is even worse. Oh well, no problem, R154 swap will fix it! 😋
@@shizukesajdm It's no DSG that's a given but it's nice to drive after driving a manual van all day and at least it's not a CVT. Iv been looking for an is300 for about 12 months now but all I can find is the sport cross and I'm not really into that.
@@davey6024 I looked for 6 months until I found this one. The saloons are getting extremely rare now. I was lucky to have found one that had been serviced every single year since it left the factory, with good bodywork and only 100k miles. Now it's time to build that 2JZ. The IS300 is so far above the IS200 it doesn't even feel like the same car, seriously. If you get the chance to buy one, don't pass it up. I might buy another one for a daily at some point.
@@shizukesajdm I'm kicking myself now. A few years back you could pick a decent 300 for 2.5k now for a nice one it's 5k, why? because 2JZ 🤔. To be honest all of the old is range has shot up in price. Following now and looking forward to seeing new videos!

i owned a 2003 IS300 between 2005 and 2009. it's still my favourite car, and i only got rid because of high running costs i couldn't justify at the time. servicing tax and insurance cost me £1000 a year. doesn't seem too bad 20 years on. honestly i felt like i was the dogs wotsits driving around in it. got rid at 45000 miles.

Hey mate - just so you know:
All 300s had yellow dogs
And also the early IS200 S (lowest grade) had 16” wheels. And then you could also spec the TTE Aero Kit to get 6 spoke 18”
And just another quick thing, not saying you got it wrong in the video but, the number displayed on the screen when in manual mode isn’t actually always what gear you are in, it’s the maximum gear that you will allow the car to shift itself to. For example you’re cruising along in 3rd, if you click it up twice and it displays “5” - it doesn’t always mean it’s in 5th, just you have allowed the car to go up to 5th if it deems it needs to. It could stay in 3rd or 4th depending on speed and Revs etc. But as I say, just a bit of handy information if you didn’t know.

Damn crazy that the us and UK didn't get the altezza, over here they come with a 2.0 4 cylinder beams motor, pushing about 210hp, it's quicker then both obviously, and lighter so it handles better.
Plus unlike the 2jz, it's an athletic engine, that likes to rev, and is fun to use, unlike the flat power curve4 of a na jz

J160 gearbox was use for RS200(Altezza) which using 3S-GE engine,seldom seeing 1G-FE with manual box,normally just auto box in it

Both of your cars are really clean for their age! I recently bought a midnight blue 2001 IS300 (stock) with only 132000 miles (it's an automatic) and I love it. The design of these cars are aesthetically pleasing to look at with the JDM styling. I plan on keeping mine forever, even if I have to EV swap it one day. Although, if I had the money, a 1JZGTE or 2JZGTE swap would be cool as hell, but as it is now it still feels very well balanced. It's a shame that rear wheel driving cars are becoming scarce.

I have a 2014 Scion FR-S, I still think I will probably do a 3sge beams swap, keep that NA and tune it to around 300hp. but I've been seriously considering a turbo 1gfe lately, just because of the sound and similar power output desired. however, what's holding me back from the 1g is the price and parts availability :/ not sure what to do!
I sold my IS200 for the 300. It’ll be getting manual swapped in the next few months. The 2J is far above the 1G so I wouldn’t bother if it was me. But it all depends on what you’re going for :)

Once you realize that you're adding 150lbs to the front end of your vehicle, you will regret it. Stick to a 2arfe or something. It ets 270whp NA as per Frankenstein Motorworks mods. I think that would be the best engine for the FR-S, and even the IS200/IS300 for people that want a lightweight sportscar. Or turbo the 2ar and aim 500hp if you wish, and have good weight.

Yeah prices of both the IS200s and IS300s are going up and up! My original plan was to supercharge the IS200, but I couldn’t pass up an IS300 with an 18 year service history at 99k miles! Now I have a 2J to build from! What do you plan on doing to your IS200?

I'm pretty just just making it a ricer. All looks and sounds. I don't want to spend too much on Tuning it because I really would like to get a IS300 or IS200 with a beams motor.

Really nice video mate, good solid information but you might want to fact check the differential ratio on the European IS300 as I believe its 3.583 : 1 not 3.9 like the US versions :)

Nice video. I am from the Caribbean & own an IS200 & an Altezza. Both carry the 1GFE Engines. However nobody can tell if the Altezza Transmission (A47DE OEM#35000-53010) is compatible with my IS200 TRANSMISSION (A45DE OEM#35000-53020). Thanks.

Little note if you have IS200 sport made in 99´ it won´t have LSD - LSD was in 00´+ models (sport)
Edit: So Idk, if I ´m wrong or not, my car have LSD (I was wrong), but my neighbour have also 99´ year Sport, he has a open diff, but his car also have all sports packet features.... so I am confused

Great Video! But I did wanna add that the is300’s have a 2jz-GE, like you said, but the Supra has a 2jz-GTE, the T is for turbo. That motor has the thicker rods and pistons, the GTE motor is the motor you’ll want to turbo. If not you can still push a healthy 350 wheel (I’ve seen more) on a stock block is300. If you put the GTE head gasket in the is300 motor it does change the compression so you can go a little higher on boost.
But you nailed this video! I could never find anything giving a good clear difference indication like you did, great job man
@@sk8allday372 Thanks for watching! Actually, the mk4 Supra came in multiple versions. Both the 2jz-ge non vvti and the 2jz-gte can be found in them 😁 Like I explained in the video, the block and the crank shaft are identical. The rods and pistons will need swapping for forged alternatives. If you watch my IS300 600whp build plan, you’ll see the plans I have regarding the engine. I’m fully aware of the changes that need to be made 👍🏻
also i think gte comes with better oil pump nd the i think the oil feeds in the head are better aswell oil channels slightly diffrent

Here we call them Alteza.Very powerful.
The real Altezza is different. It has the 3S-GE four cylinder (from the MR2 mk2) Beams engine.

Is it possible to swap the 3,7:1 diff on the IS200 manual? The is200 seems to run at really high revs for having 155PS, which makes it useless on the autobahn.
You can absolutely change the diff to whatever you want :) The gearing is definitely very short and that's one of the things that the IS300 is better at, cruising.
@@shizukesajdm ok nice, is200 goes for 2-5k and the is300, which is very rare, for 8-12k in Germany.
@@German_overengineer The price is steadily rising. Soon they’ll be 10k+ here. They’re really great cars and a supercharger completes them imo.
@@shizukesajdm super charging is not really legally doable in Germany, unless it’s the factory modification, or you do a full emission test for a couple of grants. Even changing the gear ratio is boarderline illegal here.
If your willing to endure stress with the police, you can change rims, tires, suspension and exhausts. How is the rust situation on the is? They all look quit clean compared to other 20 year old cars in Germany.

@@AgentFoxMulder1972 Yeah, an NA-T conversion with a built bottom end will give me better content for the channel :) Plus, I really want to learn more about the 2JZ. The best way to learn is to tear it apart and build it back up!
Are all Suspension Parts the same in the is 200 and the is 300?
The vast majority. The only differences are that the IS300 has slightly stiffer springs.perhaps the same springs as the IS200 Sport though. All the arms, bolts and joints are the same though 👍🏻

@@shizukesajdm nope we are in aruba 🇦🇼 he was rebuiling it he took out the engine and the whole interior to paint it he was almost finished but he just got bored and didn’t want to keep on working on the car and he sold it. Search on yt lexus is300 aruba it was the only one it was blue

Your English is fine :) The 3S-GE is better than the 1G-FE. But the 3S-GE comes in the Altezza, not the IS200 👍🏻

Would the 2jz ge be bolt on in an is200? Found a broke down is200 and a 2jz for sale and it’s a nice opportunity but I don’t know if it would be technically difficult? Of course it’s time consuming, but would it be hard to do?
You would also need the engine mounts, ECU, wiring loom, adaptor plate for the gearbox and number outs other parts that make it quite an expensive swap. Cheaper to buy an IS300, they’re not that expensive in the UK/EU :)

Find one with as low miles as possible with FSH. They're strong but it depends how they've been treated. Good luck!
Our engine has about 230k kilometers on it roughly and it runs fine still.

Sport has an LSD, different wheels, lips on the front and rear (TTE), and a two-tone steering wheel.

You’re welcome. The altezza has a 6 speed manual and a 4 cylinder 3S-GE BEAMS engine pushing around 210hp 👍🏻

I don’t really have the time to do both real life at stuff and Assetto Corsa unfortunately. I’m an engineering apprentice on shift work and studying and I’m incredibly busy. Hopefully in the future I’ll be able to do more but my main focus is IRL car stuff :)

Some people have gotten away with 400whp on an IS300 2JZ. It all depends on the condition of the engine and the tuner.

My 200 sport has xenon from factory and the cup holder is just a rectangle it doesn't hold drinks like that at all

I believe the autos have a M98 LSD diff (B) and the manuals have an M85 LSD diff (C).
Shizukesa M59 is the open diff and the M58 is the LSD

You can go buy forged pistons and rods for the is200 and will have to re bore it from 75mm to 76 probably be a 2.1
Waste of money the 1GE-FE isn’t worth building, but I am getting CP pistons, Manley rods, BC cams, BC springs and retainers, 64mm BW S300SX, etc etc. for the IS300 😜

IS200 or IS300? If it’s an IS200 I wouldn’t buy at that mileage. It’s near the end of its life.

I came out from a crv 2010 and wanna try v6,but sadly prices of tokunbo cars(foreign used cars) have become worrisome. I think I'd settle for my level of toyota matrix 09 or pontiac gt 09 model. Benz would be next when I have money,its either benz or nothing.

I think a supercharged IS200 would be way more fun than a stock auto IS300.

There’s not really much point. It’s just the same as any other paddle shift car except 10 times slower shifting 😂
I don't know if you figured it but on my is300, everytime i put the car in manual mode it starts me off at 5th gear. So I have to down shift to second from a dead stop and go from there. Hope this helps😄

@@shizukesajdm these cars came with folding side mirrors, however you need to press a button for the mirrors to close. Is there any way to make them ‘auto folding’. Eg you press lock and the mirrors fold shut

Mine was manufactured july of 1999 and has an LSD
so in the european models of the is300 the battery and abs are in different locations..... because RHD

@@swapitout5728 Are you talking about a RHD conversion? Or manual? Btw, even civics are faster than the IS200 haha! They’re good cars, don’t get me wrong, but they’re slow and the low end power is really not enjoyable for daily driving.
You forgot mention (maybe), IS300 have slightly different headlight mounting, you can swap headlights from IS300 into IS200 (after slightly modification), but from IS200 to IS300 no way...
