What's So Special About The Toyota 3S-GE?

  • The 3S four-cylinder was so good that even a Supra Mk4 got to use it successfully. The new family would go under the acronym of LARSE - Lightweight Advanced Super Response Engine. It offers exemplary reliability and a great amount of power in both the turbo and non-turbo versions. And that sound is also worth a note among four-cylinders.

@@Lagggerengineering She was enough and felt fast at all times, but i kind of wanted more. My Celica was pretty worn out amd a bit of a lemon so maybe wasnt as fast as she could be. But best car to choose from others i looked into for the 1st car. Still miss driving her. Had to sell the car because my parents didnt want me driving a sports car plus i had electrical issues with the alternator controller burning up every couple.montha in the last year of owning the car, even on the last day before selling her. Had to replace that 3 times and it burned up again when new owner drove her home. Most likely alternator was the wrong kind. Maybe from 3S-FE or 5S-FE.
Car is have now is both slower and feels much slower as its lifted up Subaru Impreza(XV/Crosstrek) But its got nice exhaust note and 4wd so its partially what i lacked in Celie(wanted GTFour so i could get it more sideways on snow especially) But i still miss her. Subaru isnt even remotely as joyful as she was to drive.(Tho still much better than other options, i couldve been forced to drive Nssan Quashquai or other soulless crossover instead so its not half-bad)
TL;DR - Kind of, it was lovely, lively and always fun, but i eventually craved more and would like rear wheel drive i.e. MR2 with Beams/3rd gen, but with EGR removed. Would easily get into RS200 horsepower. Turbo wouldn't feel as nice and wouldnt climb the revs as eagerly.

@@Kacpa2 Well I am glad you had fun with it, I want one myself too.
Who knows what was happening with the charging system that it kept destroying itself.
And yeah, my problem with picking a car for myself is mostly that no other cars interest me much. This car combines everything I want for now, it looks incredible I love it, should be plenty fast, practical with the big boot and doesn't guzzle gas like crazy.
Also it looks much simpler to work on than modern cars. Just parts availability is a bit of a concern for me. Ever had problems with that?

@@Lagggerengineering @Laggger Engineering Interestingly enough she got us home on little charge battery had, coughing and barely firing along from i presume like 9 or 8 volts crawling juat barely but enough to just arrive home.
Makes You think that cara might be alive in some way after all 😅
As for parts it wasnt really problematic for mechanical/engine/timing parts. Toyota had it in stock.
What i had as mishaps was trying to use wheel hubs off a caldina thinking its 3s-fe/ge fit and according to given dimensiosn it should, but it had one differenece, kind of a collar that was much shorter than on celica hub so it grinded against the calipers with the brake rotor horribly. I ordered oem celica hub after that. It was fine. As for body and trim parts well Celica was common enough in weaker trims ao its out there. Bushings and other stuff alike was available including some urethane ones.
It was on 18" rims which cause lots of rubbing and ride was very harsh cuz of low profile tyres so i switched to 6th gen celicas 15" alloys and had them painted black.
Overall it was decent, side turn indicators fit from one of the landcruisers(mine started falling out of the fenders)
Its just that i wish i had correct alternator in. Aside of that it was problem free.
Seats were most comfortable ones i sat in in my entire life. Velour retro sport seats it has are just amazing, with headrest in lowest position it lets you rest the whole neck and head lile some theraupetic pillow, i miss it so much and every car annoy sht ehell of me with their stupid headrests that only let you rest with the back of the skull, never letting neck rest.
i guess thats why these neck pillows are a thing to buy to have in the car.
I also made a custom trunk floor from some plywood with my grandpa and it was cavernous(i had no spare wheel so wanted it flush with the trunk floor) I could fit an industrial vacuum cleaner in the back and sleep(tho not that comfortably cuz of the angle seats fold down to) Its pretty much a pick up truck or UTE in that sense 😅
I miss it so much now...

Similar approach to cosworth, they design a good solid small engine and then add another piston until reach the design goal.
If you looking at 3S and 2J the design is very very similar, these approach not only cosworth do but BMW really like to do as well but they cut 6 to 4 because.... they like golden number 50:50 in basically every race car back in 70-80s
Note rule of thumb basically for all toyota engine. if the engine has "G" in their engine designation name, mean performance base cylinder head design by yamaha, if "F" mean economy base cylinder head.

My understanding is that Yamaha has pretty much always designed the high flow heads, with Toyota doing the low power ones internally. - So the "FE" narrow angle engines are in house, and the "GE" wide angle valves were the Yamaha designs. At least for all the Toyota's I've had since 1967. TVIS was never very effective. Having owned at least 20 Toyota's though, the Honda S2000 engine in both versions made a lot more output for the NA motors, and more modern turbo 4's from the Germans can easily make double the HP without internal mods.

    • @adewhite9876
      @adewhite9876 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Well for me personally, adequate research would have been either fact checking Toyota's published & readily available vehicle/engine specs, or sourcing my information from them in the first place.
      It's called good practice.
Also, 1 PS is is as you say 0.98 hp, but that's entirely my point.
He does indeed quote hp, not bhp but then gives the value for PS.
200PS is not, never has been & never will be 200hp. Or 200bhp.
I like my facts more than 98% accurate.
