    You are so so so right about Aziraphale having no time to process. They both didn't, really - Crowley was hit with the "job offer" and had to make his confession in a very different situation than planned, Aziraphale getting hit with it too, having Crowley reject it, having him declare his feelings, kiss him!? You can see him *start* to process it after Crowley leaves, but then the Metatron is back, and urging him to go, and there is just NO TIME.

      And no one ever has that private "love talk" with Aziraphale, whereas Crowley was hit with the truth even twice (Nina first, then Nina and Maggie together). I wish Aziraphale had this kind of "support" as well, so he would hear from others what he had been trying to deny his entire existence.

He's not stupid, he just wasn't ready before - and now that he is, it's all going wrong, and he says "I need you!" and he says "we can be together!", They want the same thing and know it, but their ideas on how that should work are different!!! But between S1 + 2, there are around 4 years, I guess. And nothing "serious" seemed to have happened between them. So it most likely never came to Aziraphale's mind that these feelings might be mutual. In S1, he keeps denying they're even friends. Just in S2, he's much more comfortable around Crowley and even actively tries getting closer to him both emotionally and physically. "You go too fast for me, Crowley" is basically their situation all the time.

    It's nice to hear someone understand Aziraphale's point of view as well as not just Crowley's. In the moment, it's very easy to believe Aziraphale is doing the wrong thing, but what people don't realize, at least not a first, is that he's not just "going back to Heaven". He wants to change things for the better, for him and Crowley and the entire world. His nature, his entire personality has always been to see good in everyone. He loves humanity and hates that Heaven can turn a blind eye to such cruelness. He's seeing good in even the Angels up there tho, or at the very least wants to be in a position of power so he can make everything better and good and not having this looming threat following them up until the next Big One and Earth gets destroyed. To run away would have guilt eating away at him to no end and he would hate himself for it.
    But I also get Crowley as well, in that why is it always them that has to fix this shit, why can't they just be a bit selfish and run away and let Earth eventually burn. Not that Crowley would want that, but I think he's tired that they can't just be themselves. I also read a fic recently that he'd never go back to Heaven not only because of the obvious, but because he would just Fall again and re-live that trauma. He's accepted who he is, despite never believing he would have Fallen, but his history with Aziraphale, for the most part, is because of the version he has been for 2 seasons; a Demon. He and Aziraphale bonded despite that, and to erase that would be cruel. Crowley and Aziraphale have both evolved because of what they physically are, and have become better for it.

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Great points. I think Aziraphale and Crowley bonded partly because they were on different sides (although we do see Aziraphale crushing on the Starmaker a bit this season). Their goals weren't really different. They had so much more in common than the people on their official sides. This is true of Beelzebub and Gabriel too, even if they started out complaining about how hard it was to be in charge of all these boneheads (and it was easy for them to leave because, ultimately, the Earth and what happens to it don't matter to them; they're adorable, but they are basically still selfish).

    • @DenvaProbablyDraws
      @DenvaProbablyDraws ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree! I don’t think either party was *wrong* per say. The way I see it, they both take two distinct roads: Aziraphale chose the path of heroism, Crowley chose the path of love. BOTH are justified, neither is wrong, but they are very different. While there could be a little of both in either path, it’s still a big choice.
      If they both went to heaven, and tried to save the world again, they would have to put the development of their relationship to the side once again. If they had both run away, they could have explored their relationship in depth, but if another armageddon were to happen, they wouldn’t be doing much if anything to stop it. This is just the generalized way of seeing it, but in such a tense moment of decision, thats basically what you’re working with right?
      Crowley has spent too long quelling his own emotion, and Aziraphale doesn’t feel like he’s enough. Aziraphale’s side of things seems to be more complicated than Crowley’s. Since the beginning, he’s had constant doubt about his own goodness: giving away the flaming sword, lying to thwart the will of God, his attempt to do good leading to the death of an innocent girl (graverobber minisode), and more. And *this.* This is a chance to finally prove he *really* is a good person. And only after he finds himself, and gets that self confidence, will he be ready to explore his emotions as Crowley already is.
      ANYWAY SORRY TO GET SO IN DEPTH Im just coping, and also your analysis sparked the writer in me.

    We are now children of divorce 😭😭😭
    Looove your take on this. Gaiman said season 2 is a bridge to season 3, a season to get the characters where they need to be so the third can be all about resolution... whatever that means. I love how he wrote Aziraphale and Crowley's break up in such a way that it feels painfully real: religious trauma, miscommunication or rather, no communication, great-good intentions with god-awful execution, etc. They love each other but it's not enough!
    Now we need to pressure and bully Amazon to pay their writers and actors!!! Without them there's no show worth watching.

    Note that Aziraphale doesn't even want to go until it's presented as a chance to *return Crowley's angelhood,* and work with him in heaven. He goes from "Hell, no, I won't go" to "You had me at "Crowley's an angel again. When do we leave?" To Az, Crowley's meant to be an angel, and the idea of giving that back to him just sweeps him away. When you add that to the obvious: he wants to help, he wants to fix it, he wants good to be GOOD...and he and Crowley can spend eternity doing good and being good.
    He misses that Crowley's come to be a rebel against both Heaven and Hell so deeply that it's a no-go. But Crowley misses that Aziraphale takes his angel-ing seriously--that angels are for making things better, and if they don't, what's the point? Crowley says they could just be them...but then he'd have to endure an angel who no longer cared about goodness. And I think that would break both of them.
    They're going to have to work their way to an independent frame that allows them to divorce Heaven and Hell, while embracing goodness and the fight against evil. Or neither will be happy.

    That last scene was acted so beautifully by both David and Michael! And from the ton of behind the scenes footage I've seen of David for pretty much everything he's been in, I know how much thought he puts into just what feelings he wants to convey to the audience and what reactions he wants out of the viewer.
    That kiss just had so much in it. And it really felt like a one sided conversation, like Crowley poured his heart out all at once with such intensity and Azi just had no idea how to deal with it. Azi didn't push Crowley away, but didn't reciprocate either. And I dont think it's a coincidence that the "you go too fast for me" line comes to mind at that moment for the audience either.
    It was heartbreaking to see but I loved everything about it, and it will be all the more rewarding after this to get to the endgame!

    27:56 Crowley's defensiveness about being considered "nice" or "kind" by others or demonstrating positive feelings towards others is not a simple psychological reluctance to vulnerability, but in the context of being a demon in Hell, an absolute necessity for literal survival. Imagine a society in which being accused of having tender feelings and/or doing good deeds is not a matter of personal embarrassment and teasing by one's bros, but a question of High Treason Against The Forces of Evil that requires the cruelest punishments potentially including permanent death. Hence his continual insistence on his self-proclaimed wickedness. He's saying, "Stop talking like I'm with the Opposition or you will get me KILLED." I believe as the story proceeds, Crowley will find it less difficult to be more open about his feelings on a personal level, and maybe in public too; he may feel less at a disadvantage re: his former bosses, due to shifting power dynamics in Hell.

    • @HuntingViolets

    Loved your reaction! It felt very similar to my own. I watched everything right away and have had plenty of time to process it and while it still hurts, I absolutely love it!
    Tbh it was nice to see someone who tried to look at things from both perspectives. I feel like the situation is a lot more complicated than "Aziraphale is being an idiot".
    Both of them are being honest and both of them love each other and are hurt, and it isn't an easy thing to watch but it's a very 'human' one.
    I get why Aziraphale would want to change heaven for the better, make things he knows are unfair 'right'. (The Job episode, Crowley's own fall for asking questions... There's multiple examples of things Aziraphale disagrees with and I'm sure would change if given the chance.)
    When you add in heaven and the second coming it gets even worse, so I think it actually makes sense that once it's mentioned he'd want to be present so he could try to stop it from the inside. (Maybe he feels like this time he'll actually get to speak to God?)
    I'm absolutely sure it won't be that easy and will probably backfire on him, but do think his heart is in the right place.
    It's also interesting that Crowley suggests to Muriel they'll go to the Ritz for breakfast, then when Aziraphale tells him about the offer he suggests they can run off together again. (Implying leaving earth, even as he's mentioning Aziraphale and his bookshop.) He mentions heaven being wrong for wanting to destroy earth (which he's absolutely right about), but goes back to 'we can get away from all this'. (After they've averted the apocalypse once already, haha.)
    Like you said, neither of them were given time to just sit down and talk things out, they were put on the damn spot. Metatron inserted himself at a very... volatile moment, and things just fell apart. Aziraphale's "you go too fast for me" is very fitting here. Decisions like these aren't meant to be made so quickly.

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, I think Crowley really wants them to be together in the bookshop that Aziraphale loves, on the planet they love, but Alpha Centauri will do if everything's going to be destroyed. (Otherwise, a nice vacation there.) But he needs to process too. All his plans of their being together were slipping through his fingers and he was desperately grasping at them. I really give him credit for being able to make his proposal. (So tired of the "Now, what did you want to say to me?" "Never mind, it doesn't matter" after someone is going to declare and some news from the other person derails it--did that start with "Cyrano"?) It was brave of him.
      Aziraphale is not wrong to try to make a difference, I think. He might fail, but at least he will have tried. And sometimes people do make a difference when they try, although restructuring a whole system isn't that easy, even when you're third (or second? We haven't seen God in present day this season) in command or first in command on a practical level (until you're reporting for saying "Nah" to the apocalypse anyway).
      They're both wrong and both right, and it's sad, but I, like you, look forward to next season.

    • @stephanied1024
      @stephanied1024 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@HuntingViolets Yes, I agree! Crowley wants to be with Aziraphale in anyway he can, but even he has his limits, and that's a pretty healthy thing. They both need time to think and decide what they want, but obviously I'm sure they'll have to team up to stop the second coming and they'll be able to have a happy resolution. It's just... Not going to be immediate like we wanted.
      You raise a good point with Crowley confessing even after Aziraphale had told him of his plans, because I feared he wouldn't go through with it at first. It's got to be incredibly hard to put yourself out there for someone who has already rejected you twice (and hey, it's okay, Aziraphale wasn't ready, his thoughts/feelings matter too, but... Still) when you can see things are not going the way you'd envisioned. He was incredibly vulnerable and brave and I love that he took the chance to tell Aziraphale how he felt even if the ending was tragic. Aziraphale knowing how Crowley feels is going to change things for him immensely going forward.
      Truthfully I have no clue how the whole second coming thing is going to be resolved, but it's very in character for Aziraphale to try to change what very much looks like a broken system because it isn't just. At this point I wouldn't be surprised by anything... If he too has his memory erased because he won't go along with heaven, or if he gets caught working with Crowley again and is punished some other way, maybe they try to erase him from the book of life again, this time by the suggestion of metatron, but... Good on him for trying? 😅

      @@stephanied1024 Yes, I feel they were both brave. It's not easy to lay your heart and soul out and place it in someone's hangs. I'm sure the confession would have gone a little differently if Aziraphale hadn't gone first (or there had been no job offer). Amazing work from both actors.

    I've never felt such a devastating emotional blow with a show, and I'm pretty sure is because this show is my comfort, cozy, sweet, comedic show that I was always expecting to end in a beautiful note, and they gave us the most fanfic season ever to then switch shit up in the last 15 minutes, it felt too real too quickly. It was sooooo fucked up. The way we know that Aziraphale wants to make heaven a better place to deserve Crowley, we know he knows Crowley is perfect the way he is, but at the same time he's sooo brainwashed that with a sign of kindness, with the idea of the possiblity of changing the toxic environment that hurt them both so much, he simply couldn't resist. But what Crowley heard was that he is a bad guy, damned, unforgivable, and undeserving of love, and Aziraphale truly tap into that insecurity. I can't even stress enough how proud I was of Crowley for no matter what confessing his feelings, even when he knew that Aziraphale was going to leave him, but he was also wrong, because he has an issue with running away, he loves so much not only Aziraphale, I think it has been quite clear that he loves humanity and being involved with humanity even more than Aziraphale but he refuses to accept it and when in danger he wants to run, he asked Aziraphale to do something that he coudnt't do, Aziraphale is always someone who does and Crowley finds that very difficult. THIS HURTS SO MUCH!

    I really loved your nuanced take on this, because while I do think most of the viewers got there eventually (me included), you were very quick with processing the complexity of this break up. I know I wasn't when I fist saw the finale, I was unhinged, Aziraphale is my favourite character and still I was so caught up in the intensity of the ending and the idea of how I would have wished everything to go that I was completely pissed off with him and it took me a day to come around again :D

  • @erykaton170
    @erykaton170 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I appreciate your take on this. You shared the emotional reaction that everyone seems to have had from the ending (which gutted me), but your taking a few minutes to process, and come back to share your insightful comments was powerful. It actually helped me better understand my own feelings, and why that last 15 minutes of the episode has had such an impact on me.
    I've been in the position where I finally choked out the words of my feelings for my partner, and it was too late. That was 25 years ago. This ending just brought it all back to the surface, and I couldn't figure out why I've been obsessing over this, rewatching the whole series and watching people react to the ending, over and over. Two things I would never normally do. The penny finally dropped as you analyzed the interactions and motivations. You're very astute. Glad I found you.

    i like the fact our protagonists didnt get the happy ending, many expected. not everything can have a big happy bow tying things together. shows the rips and tears our relationships in life endure. things were tied together, but it was a bit messy, and not without consequence. a reflection to the real world. too many shows fail to depict this aspect of ourselves.

    been watching you since your first doctor who reaction so this has been a long time coming! So happy to have watched this wonderful series with you. I really loved your analysis after this episode! Great points esp from aziraphales pov. I've seen a lot of fans rightfully very upset with him but not really taking into account quite how much he's having to process in a few moments so thank you for exploring that! This is why I've been following for so long because you connect to these stories on a deep level and I love to hear what you think. Thank you!

    Girl! I loooooved your reaction and analysis!
    I think this last scene depicts a very realistic take on the struggles of a romantic relationship, or at least a very deep one: when two persons love each other deeply and passionately, different point of views might be a source of a tragic miscommunication and deep hurt. And just like you said, it was so fast, they did not have a time to take a breath and think about it, maybe try to communicate again and sort it out. It really broke my heart because I feel for both of them.
    In some way, the journey of this ship is a weird one. It started as a very subtle one in the book, which was more of a running joke of both of them look like a gay couple to others. Then the fans took initiative and developed it with fanfiction and fanart for years. Terry and Neil were aware of it, and even talked about a sequel, taking this ship into consideration (according to Neil’s Tumblr). In the show we then have Tennant and Sheen give it all to show it in their acting. ..
    During that point in which Nina talked to Crowley about what they look like to others, it almost made me feel like the fandom talking to the character (or even its creator) and make him take it more seriously and reflect on it. The confirmation in this last scene was just surrealistic to me when I first saw it, than it made sense again.
    I need season 3.

  • @emaloney2211
    @emaloney2211 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Given that this season has focused a few times of Aziraphale lying, would it be too much to consider that he is not as naive as the others have made him out to be? He has shown that he can be ‘enough of a bastard’ to have a plan up his sleeve. He may not have told the whole truth to Crowley about the offer and his genuine feelings only started to show as Crowley calls him an idiot and the shock from the kiss.
    Nina asked Azi why he doesn’t stand up for himself and he says that he would but Crowley is happy when saving him. Once Azi finds out about the Second Coming he knows that he has to save Earth in order to protect Crowley so that’s why he gets into the lift without much resistance. The smile at the end may be Azi knowing the game is on and the thought of saving Crowley makes HIM happy even though they will be separated for a while.
    I will not be surprised if during Season 3 ( fingers crossed) it will go along the lines of ‘ I thought you said nothing lasts forever’,
    ‘I’m an angel………….
    ………’I lied’

    I need the third season asap. If Aziraphael is leaving Crowley and me to make changes, he can’t just make changes. The system is broken. It needs dismantling. It needs to be built from the ground up. That’s a lot of work and it can’t be done alone. It needs a shit ton of people and effort.

    As an Asperger's autist, those last scenes were just too much for me to handle- I didn't understand what was going on. It took me another watch and chats with other fans to get a hold on the entire situation. And since then, I'm kind of traumatised about it. And to be honest, I understand Aziraphale as much as I understand Crowley. And that's also what makes it complicated for me to chat with many other fans now, because it feels like 99% of the fandom supports Crowley and blame Aziraphale for everything that happened. It's actually a nice change that you don't take anyone's side automatically just because one of the characters is more "popular".

    So sorry, we all wanted to warn you you'd be in tears by the end of the 6th episode, but we didn't want to spoil it for you, just know you weren't the only one with tears.
    As to the end, I see 'Fell as the career professional that loves his job, even though it really isn't good for him, and being "Promoted" is just gonna make his life worse, but he's to naive or blind to see that, unlike Crowley, who see's how bad that job is for 'Fell.
    There's also the suggestion going around the fandom that the Meteron might have hinted that Crowley would be written out of existence in the Book of Life had 'Fell not taken the job, as the others wanted to do.
