Jonas inspired me to get back into NES Tetris after a roughly 20 year hiatus. It was always my favorite game as a little kid, but I eventually stopped playing as time went on and I grew up, no longer had a NES console, etc... Eventually I came across some of his matches on TH-cam. I had no idea competitive tetris was a thing and I didn't know it was possible for it to be played so well. I knew had to get all the gear and start playing again. His stacking was always so creative and genius that I would mention to my wife while watching him play that he somehow elevated a 30 year old nintendo game to high art (sounds silly but is so true if you follow the game at all). When the "torch was passed" so to speak in 2018 and onwards I've never seen a champion/leader/figurehead be so graceful and inspiring for a new generation in all of sports (e-sport or otherwise).
More importantly than his legacy in tetris that will forever be impossible to match, I honestly felt like he was a close friend. I've watched his twitch streams for a couple years now. I don't even have a twitch account so I never commented - I just watched and tried to learn from his playing, or simply had him and Heather on in the background while I ate dinner late at night. It felt like I was their friend hanging out in their room with them. He provided with me with so many laughs and good times. I've cried many times since I learned the news last night like he was a close friend, because to me he was even though he has no idea who I am.
So from this random guy on the internet: Thank you Jonas for inspiring me inside and outside of the game. You will forever be loved and looked up to. And until we meet on the other side - whenever I finally manage to get a maxout it is dedicated to you, my friend.

    • @turosfagyi
      @turosfagyi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thank you for expressing in words what I feel myself. I've been playing tetris nearly every day since I learnt about it through the video with Jeff in the finals, but since I heard about Jonas passing, I just couldn't turn on the game, I still haven't processed the news, it's just not the same any more. And what you said about your future first maxout moved me to tears. I haven't yet gotten one, either, but when I do, I'll dedicate it to him, too. This will be one more "push" towards that goal.

Even now, over 9 months later, it still feels really weird without Jonas. I may have only gotten into Tetris in early 2019, and mainly played guideline and didn't give much thought to classic Tetris, but even being in the community for that short of a time, Jonas was and still is prominent in every area of Tetris. I knew that he was one of the best Tetris players of all time, likely the best, and until recently, I had barely played any classic Tetris. He was such a positive figure in the Tetris community, and every Tetris player should strive to be as positive as he was.

I had to poke my head out from my month-long Tetris/Discord/Twitch break at this news. It's so shocking, so sad, so flabbergasting... what can one even say?
Well Scout, you found the words to say. The only thing we can do is remember how amazing he was, and continue to remember. And do what we can to support his family. Thank you, Scout, for leading the way, and for sharing your memories and experiences. Not gonna lie, I'm pretty jealous of how you got to interact with Jonas. Cause he was just that kind of person, where *you* are incredibly grateful for those experiences with him, and *I* am jealous of you for having them.
Jonas was a giant of a human, making everything and everyone around him better. He always knew the right things to say and do, he always made people feel good about themselves, he always lifted people up. That kind of personality is rare and special, one to be treasured forever. I truly believe he impacted thousands of people, and all of them positively.
The scene owes him an immeasurable and unpayable debt of gratitude. None of us would be here if not for him and everything he's done for Classic Tetris over the last 11+ years. From his 5head plays from the very beginning -- heads and shoulders above the rest of the field, to his incredible SEVEN world championships, to his more than gracious sportsmanship in defeat (going so far as to root his peers on against him), to his open and glad sharing of knowledge in the hopes of helping everyone else to improve their Tetris, to his community built through Twitch and TH-cam, to his ambassadorship for the game and community around the world -- from California to Hong Kong to Spain.
He and Heather were the perfect pair, complementary in so many ways. I can't imagine her grief. Anyone losing a spouse or partner would be feeling tremendous grief right now but when that partner is a person like Jonas...? Literally unimaginable. I think she will manage through, at least partially with support of friends and the community, but it will be hard. All we can do is provide all the help we can.

I rarely post comments on yt videos, but this time, it will be an exception.
Even not knowing Him personally this strikes me deeply.
You could feel His positive character radiate through the screen, not even a technical medium could be a barrier of that emotion...
Even 7 Champion titles look like a grain of rice compared to that unbelievably positive attitude.
What i admired the most is how He treated and respected his rivals, with pure respect, with ZERO EGO.
    Condolences to family and friends.

If it weren't for him, the Classic Tetris Community will not be where it is today. He was so chill, down to Earth, and was willing to pass the torch to the new generation.

(Apologies in advance for the wall of text)
While I'm not particularly active in Tetris nor play it competitively at the moment (I play it for fun here and there, with occasional speedruns of Tetris Effect's Journey mode), I got into NES Tetris through your videos, CTWC matches, and Jonas's tutorial series. As you worded very well in the video, Jonas was a very kind person that did so much for the community, which was evident to me even in the short year or so I've been watching competitive and high-level NES Tetris. I even intended, for 2021, on contacting him in some form either through joining chat during his twitch streams, commenting on his videos, or meeting him in-person by chance at a convention. While that can't happen as he has passed away, I do still intend on using the strategy tips I gained from watching competitive Tetris to better my own play in the Tetris games that I play (Tetris Effect and Tetris 99), and possibly get good at NES.
I plan on contributing to that Tetris for Jonas project you linked in the description, and if I ever get good enough at NES Tetris to get a maxout, I will dedicate it to Jonas

A worthy sendoff summary. Thank you for sharing these moments that so many people shared and so many more wish they could have witnessed.
I know that this is something he would have loved. Maybe not so much the praise, as this was "given" to him, to treat people like that. But it is helpful to remind people of and praise people for treating others with respect, being open to ideas that might differ from yours, and being happy for the successes of others, even this means defeat for you.
Jonas embodies everything that I wish humanity would stand for, united. Let us make a step in the direction to make his legacy a piece of every one of us. Now more than ever, because the ambassador has left the building. But he will never leave our hearts.
    Take care and stay awesome.

When I saw the news I felt so mad/frustrated about this and I couldn't figure out why, when people who entertain me or who I admire pass away I could feel shocked or upset but never like this, it kept bothering me for the next 2 days and I couldn't stop thinking about it, until I saw a comment that some guy wrote and everything made sense to me "this doesn't feel like a celebrity dying, it feels as if a distant friend passed away" and that's on point, I can't easily get over the fact Jonas is no longer here because he was one of us, such an awesome and lovable guy as well. There's a lot about Jonas and his legacy to be positive about, I know eventually I'll be positive, but now it feels so wrong, I'll miss his "concentration look" when he played and his humble speeches whether he won or lost, I'll miss "boom tetris for Jonas" but I'm sure as long as people care about Classic Tetris he will never be forgotten.
Thank you Jonas for doing so much for Tetris and for us.

I'll just re-post below the condolences I left on the Classic Tetris community page announcing his passing. Thank you aGameScout for sharing those memories with us.
"Thank you to everyone who shared their own grief and condolences for his friends and family, reading them over the last hour helped a lot. I'm just a fan so I know my pain is nothing compared to those who knew him, that fact did not stop me crying though. For the last 2-years since I watched his epic face off with Joseph on youtube not long after it happened I have been a fan, what was it the tournament host said about Joans, I think it was "Gracious in victory and defeat." His personality on camera was infectious and his positivity towards the younger generation of players was inspiring, no jealously, no bitterness, just a love for the game and community, a true sportsmanship that stands as a towering light above us all.
When he played in the 2020 Championship I tormented my workmates with my fan boy ranting in the days leading up to it. Watching him go on a tear though the losers bracket up to the final was one of the most exhilarating moments of watching anything in my life.
All his vids and streams need to be securely archived before they are lost to time, let his love and passion for the game and fandom inspire and in the case of his introductory vids even guide Tetris players for generations to come.
Much love to his friends, family and all those who were touched by his light, RIP Joans the Goat.
    "

When Jonas Neubauer spoke at CTWC 2018 after the finals, not gonna lie, i cried. i felt the same kind of familiar love and fondness that a father has for his family.
I think that Jonas embodied that role for the tetris community. Outside of this community, tetris is just a silly russian puzzle game. But inside, its family, its new friends and old, it's passion for something that has brought so many generations of people together. It's not just a silly game anymore, its so much more than that now.
    I think Jonas knew that.
Follow your passion, even if others put you down for it, call it pointless. You never know the friends you will make and the places you'll go together.
You're the best Jonas, first drinks on us when we get there, your favorite.

Jonas was the guy that hooked me into watching Tetris. He seemed a genuinely lovely bloke and was an absolute diamond as role model and ambassador for Classic Tetris World Championships.
He was a little socially awkward yet very open and confident and friendly and giving...With a huge dollop of self depreciating and silly humour. A guy who seemed to not have a single enemy in the world.

He would see me maybe 2-3 times a year and never once forgot my name and my friends' names. It was unbelievable. As you say, he was one of the most positive people that I have ever met.
