Actually that is considered hard for classical piano. She approx 3 times better on piano than guitar. Almost went pro out of high school, but switched to guitar institute

It would be interesting to hear what Miyako herself thinks about her piano skills versus her guitar skills and which intrument she likes to play most. I agree that the pianist is her first and the guitar the second. I wonder which she chooses to play for pleasure.

You can tell that the lead vocalist has ballet training based on the way she moves her body, especially her arms.

Even more than that. If you look carefully, right at the end when Miyako finished up the song on piano, you might catch a glimpse of Asami sinking gracefully to her knees in front of the drums. That in fact is taken from the solo dance "The Dying Swan" originally choreographed by Mikhail Fontine to the music of Camille Saint-Saens' "Le Cygne" (The Swan) especially for the legendary ballerina Anna Pavlova. This dance has since been incorporated into Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" ballet. Naturally and understandably, the camera focusses on Miyako on piano at this point so we miss most of Asami's interpretation of the Dying Swan. That's a bit of a shame because you won't often get the chance to see somebody dance elements of classical ballet in four inch heels!

@@michaelafrancis1361 Thanks for pointing that out and also for the insights into the song. I went back and watched it. It faded out pretty quickly, but I caught it. Lovely. You don't get to see that in four inch heals or rock songs in general! Thanks Again!

Glad you got to this, it's a masterpiece. Miyako, who composes a lot of their music, is a professional concert-level classical pianist, and was originally on track to make classical music her career. When she was 18, she picked up a guitar, and we now see the result. She particularly likes the Romantic Era classical composers like Debussy, Dvořák, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. She composed “Swan Song” using elements of the New World Symphony (Dvořák) and Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude. All five members of the band are Jedi-level musicians, but I think Miyako is a once-in-a generation talent, a true savant. And no, even for trained classical musicians, this is not "basic". It is the most famous and most challenging of Chopin's 27 piano etudes, and is often played in formal recitals as a way to do a little showing off.

Miyako has confessed that she was super nervous at the beginning of this concert and it was mostly because she knew she had to play that Chopin piano etude. It was the one thing she knew had to be perfect and it is a challengingly difficult piece to pull off. Just as an aside... that might look like a concert grand piano but in reality it is a Roland electronic piano dolled up to look like a grand. In an interview Miyako has said that they chose that instrument for its aesthetic appearance to look white and classy. A real percussive grand piano would have been an impractical nightmare. Not only would it have been massively heavy and difficult to mike up but also you have to retune a grand piano every time you shift one and that's half a days work just there. I agree with you about Miyako. As I've said before, Lovebites consists of four insanely talented musicians and one genius.

    • @hiawatha.g
      @hiawatha.g 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@michaelafrancis1361 Yes, of course Roland is the go-to maker of electronic instruments that simulate acoustic instruments. I have also heard that Miyako long had reservations about using one until they could get the sound close enough to the real thing. It would make sense, she's a perfectionist.

"How did it happen?" you ask? Miho had a dream to revive traditional Heavy Metal in a modern context, so she and Haruna recruited the people they knew could help them achieve Miho's dream. She's the beating heart of the band, as well as the Boss. You can see her keeping an eye on her girls as she plays her part during gigs. They are a race-tuned engine, and Haruna and Miho are the transmission. Midori and Miyako are the pistons, and Asami is the turbo.

Great reaction. I had a friend in HS who was on a classical piano track from about the age of 3 and he would normally practice about 4 hours a day. When he was getting ready for a competition, he would practice about 6-8 hours a day. The strength in his hands was unbelievable. When a carnival was in town they had that test your grip thingy and he always won by a large margin. Some classical piano pieces can last up to 45 minutes, so endurance is a given. I would assume that playing the guitar uses the same muscles and is probably fairly easy for her.

    LOVEBITES - Swan Song lyrics:
If this was the last day you could live on this earth
World you still go on, accusing someone for today
It’s better to fail than not do anything at all
It is not the length, but depth of life that counts
    Oh brave soldier
    Oh gallant warrior
Valor to those who died in battle to Valhalla
    Believe what’s in your soul
For death will come to all
You shall rest peacefully in God’s Heaven
    Floating lotus
    You are so graceful
    Saintly and glorious
    Till the end of time
    Floating lotus
    You are so beautiful
    Sing me your sweet song
    The legend of the swan
If you’ve never hoped, you’ve never been though despair
Ignorance is bliss, it’s easier to not care
You might think it’s meaningless to sacrifice a life
Sometimes the life of one can save so many more
    Oh brave soldier
    Oh gallant warrior
Valor to those who died in battle to Valhalla
    Believe what’s in your soul
For death will come to all
You shall rest peacefully in God’s Heaven

Miyako said that Roland's white piano looks nice, but it's very hard to play because it's an electronic piano. So, at this year's concert, she was playing a grand piano that she was used to playing. When you play a piece of music with a high degree of difficulty that requires super skills, you need delicate conditions for the piano itself.

Great, Great analysis and review. There are so many points you pointed out but it exceeds my English capability to talk about. First of all, stamina, try Edge of the World and We the United, those are the very ending of this same concert at Zepp Diver City Tokyo 2020, and a kind of connected. You'll know how those small women keep their stamina and quality of performance, not a sweat, and they are in high heels.
About piano, the other guitarist Midori has learned piano from 2 years old, and Asami the singer also plays piano and she also trained ballet. Yes, they have classic background, and that gives a lot in their composition of their tunes. By the way, Miyako started guitar at her 18, and Midori at 20. It's just talent which I never have.
If you want see switching of guitar and piano, try "Rising" in the same this live show. Don't miss when Miyako stops playing guitar and when she resumes playing guitar again, and she also switches rhythm. So smooth and quick, she doesn't miss a single beat.
One addition. You'll be surprised when Haruna the drummer stands up at the finare, seeing how small she is.

Pretty sure Chopin is by no means considered basic in classical piano, especially the particular etude which is probably meant to train non-dominant hand technique. What we see here from Miyako is a piece composed to incorporate elements of Chopin and Dvořák throughout a metal song. She just sits on the piano, bangs out some Chopin in a live environment in the middle of a metal gig and, when she's done, grabs her pick and guitar and proceeds to tap out an intro on the electric guitar too. What's on display here is more than just raw talent: it's top notch musical education, relentless practice, compositional perfectionism and professional performance chops.

OK.

You can see a hundred or more reactions to this song where they never stop except to say "awesome" and "I like that." This is by far and without doubt the best, most informed reaction I've seen.
