  • Today's spoiler free anime review covers Betterman, an anime often misunderstood due to its association with GaoGaiGar and the Yuusha franchise. While the connection exists, Betterman has so much more to offer and provides a totally different psychological mystery/horror type of experience with mechs and kaiju.

Betterman is such a unique anime experience, I mean the opening alone is one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen in an anime. It's very trippy and I think everyone should watch it, not because it's particularly good, but because it's just so weird, there's really nothing else like it. It is kinda sad but also really true that people only talk about it because of its connection with GaoGaiGar.

To say the Betterman and GaoGaiGar connection was due to low sales is just plain wrong as it was always connected from the start, the whole franchise was just Yonetani’s glorified fanfic once sunrise handed it to him partway through GaoGaiGar’s airing. While it is easily missable, it is shown from the very beginning they use reoccurring, albeit background, characters multiple times throughout with some minor details also. The connection is made more obvious in Grand Glorious Gathering but they leave a ton of the explaining in the sequel LN GaoGaiGar vs Betterman. It originally had anime plans immediately following FINAL but were cancelled and then the story finally came into fruition in the form of a LN a few years back.

I get that, but there's nothing substantial linking them since their main experiences are so far apart. It's about the same as Leiji Matsumoto or Go Nagai's work being linked through a reoccurring character, but to say they're all canonically connected is a stretch that's nonrelevent to their primary experience and only serves to confuse the viewer. Not that it's what's intended, but it's how they're received by the average modern viewer when they hear they're in the same universe. "so that means I have to watch GaoGaiGar to watch Betterman" and vice verse, I'd say no, their experiences stand alone and don't add much to the understanding of the other. There are connections, but the greatest and most obvious connection feels tacked on last minute in both shows, even more in GaoGaiGar

I love Betterman. It was one of the first anime's I watched and I was hooked. I know the protagonist could be annoying but his presence helped to lighten things up a bit when it came to a very serious and creepy anime. 👍

Betterman was one of my favorite anime right out of high school. It was one of me and my late HS best friend’s favorite ones to watch together and I still think about it fondly on a pretty regular basis.
Heck, I even had a fairly cringey OC on some Dragon Ball fan wiki I wrote for who was “Quarter Betterman”. 😂
I really want to watch it again some day.

The thing that I liked most about this anime, is that it came out and had a giant Mech in it, but it was really a secondary thing and used almost as if it were a somewhat higher tiered version of the suit at the end of Aliens. I agree with you on basically every level, and I've actually had it since there was a Suncoast in the mall that was near me almost 20 years ago. I lost that copy and bought a new one because that's how much I enjoy it. I think it is 100% worth watching, and I think it has a lot of heavy themes that are really well done in a way in which a younger audience as well as older audience will appreciate and be able to watch it. However, there are moments that are quite unnerving and they do such a good job because for the most part that doesn't happen throughout segments of the series. Then of course you have the Animus flower and all the meaning behind it.

When I watched Betterman, I was much more familiar with GaoGaiGar (in fact, I mostly watched it to understand the GGG vs. Betterman web novel). Looking back, I could see the connections were quite there. For instance, GGG was _not_ afraid to dabble in Betterman's brand of horror and dark aesthetics when it wanted to (especially in the early episodes), and Keita and Akamatsu felt a bit like side characters from GGG that had stumbled into a wholly different setting (even if you didn't know Akamatsu was a member of the Shishioh family).

To say it seems the connections between Betterman and GaoGaiGar is tacked on because the world and tone seem so different just seems wrong. When you have a world it doesn’t have to adhere to one show’s tone. So many contrasting tones can exist in a single world because a physical world is gigantic. Connections doesn’t require one to suddenly carry the same tone as the other when it is just another story within the same world. To say the connections are tacked on just seems wrong when they are in there from beginning to end

That "Evangelion clone" comment just makes me cringe hard. That series has been driving me crazy with it's obnoxious fandom for the past 10 years now. Next to other anime with terrible fandoms. It's shit like this that makes me miss the 00s where anime was just that cool thing on TV and not many people knew it was called anime, so much charm back in those days or at least things were simpler.
This show, it seems interesting enough, a mecha themed horror anime actually sounds pretty interesting ngl. The main character sounds like the worst thing about it. All though there is so many mecha anime that it's easy to get lost in it all, but at the same time I am not those "Evangelion, Code Geass and Gurren Lagaan" only watchers that Twitter seems to dislike so much.

@@bobsamurai really is a shame. These two being connected is ripe for potential but even I have to agree that it was hard to really accept that these two were even part of the same continuity say for the art style. They just have so vastly different tones. One is a hot blooded over the top mecha anime with the themes of friendship and teamwork, the other is a horror anime that psychologically fucks with characters, with plenty of violent deaths, and has a bittersweet but depressing as hell ending. Needless to say, Super Robot Wars definitely did a way better job in connecting the two. Which isn’t really high praise because it’s kind of a given that SRW HAS to make do with the crossover idea.
