      The fact that you see these people who grew up in the neighbourhoods as complaining about the ghetto '' changing '' and not the eventual displacement of themselves or their families, which is what gentrification does, shows how fucking ignorant you people are. What good is it doing for the people who have lived IN the hood and call it hell, if they're going to be displaced and outpriced of their neighbourhood due the price of living going up. So they went from living in a neighbourhood and being able to get by, to eventually being displaced by upper class wealthier families, which leads to moving into ANOTHER hood. GREAT SUCESS!
      God forbid some sort of goal is made by the government to improve low-income neighbourhoods without the constant need of out-pricing the families.

    • @Splexsychiick
      @Splexsychiick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      This is one of the reasons why gentrification is problematic. However it shouldn't blow over onto the unproblematic people who move in. One of the biggest thing the new people do is file noise complaints...in the middle of the day. Whenever they feel the need. When people are having birthday parties or a regular bbq. They mess up the flow of the neighbour. Once exceptable behaviour from long time neighbours becomes unwanted. For example Bobby plays loud jazz Friday evening it's kind of annoying but it's become the sound of the neighbourhood. it stops about 10 or there about no one else will call the police just the new recidents to the neighbourhood. People sell things in the neighbourhood like snacks or clothing. Maybe cd's. Everyone knows the plug but the new neighbours calls the police on them just because they get a business licence to begin their legitimate business and they are agree the locals aren't supporting them. They do shady and underhanded things to get their neighbours kicked out so their friends/co-workers can move next door. It's scummy. They buy out businesses for less than they are worth and make the locals feel unwelcomed or unwanted. As simple as letting people sit on a bench outside a building. Yes you own the building but what did you put the bench there for. Calling the police on small children. Two wrongs don't make a right but I understand why people fight against gentrification just they often go about it the wrong way.

    Gentrification is not about race necessarily, it’s about class. It’s happened in London a lot. What tends to happen is that the heart of the community is lost and it becomes ‘rich people who don’t talk to each other’ town.

      “The policies that cause cities to gentrify are crafted in the offices of real estate moguls and in the halls of city government,” Peter Moskowitz writes in How to Kill A City. Moskowitz uncovers the massive, systemic forces behind gentrification in New Orleans, Detroit, San Francisco, and New York. The deceptively simple question of who can and cannot afford to pay the rent goes to the heart of America's crises of race and inequality. In the fight for economic opportunity and racial justice, nothing could be more important than housing.

All these people complaining need to go out into the wilderness and live a little and realize how brutal and ruthless the natural world really is.

      Transforming poor, high crime neighborhoods into middle class, low crime areas will significantly benefit many of the people that live there. Sure, it will push some people out but land owners and people that are able to secure jobs with new companies can often remain or sell and move somewhere better. Realistically, many of the people that can’t afford to live there will end up moving to somewhere equal to or better than where they were before. The temporary inconvenience (obviously a major inconvenience, I’ll admit) of a few is definitely worth the long term growth of others

Most residents will simply be forced to move into another poor area or some end up homeless. Yeah, neighborhood becomes nice but it won't be for you unless you can find a better job that pays more money just to keep the house you'll be paying more in 5 years.

    • @jl9211
      @jl9211 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct me if you believe otherwise, but the same people complaining about gentrification think White Americans can be replaced because other people were living on the continent first. By that logic, I shouldn't care about people being gentrified out of their neighborhoods because they already pushed out the neighborhood's original founders. They're just going through a reverse version of what they already put White America through. These communities are the reason housing prices outside of them are so high to begin with.

    • @bluedreamkush2392
      @bluedreamkush2392 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Solid Snek
      I don't believe any neighborhood should be gentrified. There is a neighborhood in Chicago area called Pilsen. Pilsen is predominantly Hispanic. It's close to downtown so rich folks started buying out buildings and turned it into art galleries. I don't understand why gentrifications starts out with art galleries but it does. 5 years later a lot of Hispanics are being forced out into shittier neighborhoods. They constantly get harassed by folks who want to buy their house just so the buyer can flip it into a luxury apartment. Imagine living in a house for 50 years with no intention of moving then one day you're being forced out because some rich snob took a liking to your neighborhood. I don't think that is ethically right. I think there are better ways to improve on neighborhoods than by kicking all the native residents out.
      If you think it is morally okay to kick them out because the original founders were also kicked out... that is a fucked up and sociopathic way of looking into this. Also L.A. was founded by Mexicans. Mexicans overall lived in California first before any other race/ethnic. Since we are going by that logic we can go back and forth on that matter but it's pointless.

    • @jl9211
      @jl9211 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not that I believe that logic, it's that I'm used to disingenuous people using it. I think people looking to start businesses are focusing too much on the overcrowded cities, but as long as they do, this cycle will be inevitable until some sort of industry comes out of these neighborhoods. It's not pretty, but it's how cities work.

      If one form of racism is accepted by society against one race than racism can only ever grow stronger because that race WILL eventually retaliated and the cycle will never end.

      I actually think these folks are shooting themselves in the foot. Sure, they will be priced out eventually, but the keyword here is 'eventually'. They probably have a good 5 years until they cant afford their rent. This means they have 5 years to start making connections with these middle/upper-middle classed gentrifiers. Western Europe, the Scandinavian states, and the United States deal with thousands to millions of foreign intrusions every year. Few folks purposely migrate to China, Russia, Nigeria, India, Iran and the Arab Gulf states in a hostile manner. Almost no sane and reasonable ‘modern’ human ever seeks to enter the so called “3rd world” just because they can. “Open borders” are an atrocious ideal that very few folks should ever feel the need to entertain.

      HologramGhost I’m not shitting on them but denying reality Is a harmful thing. I’m saying Mexico has no real claim beyond the old Spanish empire once claiming it. All the people that lived there’s descendants still live there and it was built by the ancestors of people who consider themselves Mexicans. Look I know a lot of Hispanics feel unwelcome in this country and as a consequence they build this narrative that they actually do deserve to be here more than anyone else. In reality those historical claims have no basis. If you’re a us citizen then you belong here and it’s sad that they feel this way. If you’re illegal, you have to go back.

    • @hologramghost5331
      @hologramghost5331 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well if you want to talk about reality, the reality is that the US invaded Mexico under false pretenses, that the campaign to conquer the west was an illegal campaign masterminded by James K Polk and once the US illegally occupied Mexico it held the country at gun point until they agreed to sell the land for peanuts, Mexicans believe it or not haven't forgotten this so no moral high ground there, but that is besides the point, for the most part Mexicans are here because American Business need cheap labor to be competitive in the global market and our government doesn't have a system in place to meet the labor demands of the market in real time, funny how you never hear about that in the news.

    While i'm by no means defending the actions of these people, as obviously violence and intimidation is never the answer. But i have to say i find it weird that everyone's ignoring the underlying point here (other than the clear racism which, while its completely misplaced, is somewhat understandable), which is how gentrification is a problem that's forcing the working class and those who live in public/council housing out of their neighbourhoods. This is a problem that's happening in a lot of countries, including here in the UK, and it really is a problem because when councils focus only on building for the middle and upper class it causes the problems were starting to see today including severe lack of housing, rising homelessness and a continually increasing gap between the rich and the poor. While i again condemn the actions of these people i do think it's a conversation we need to be having because i think they're driven to this point by a mixture of ignorance and desperation.
    p.s. just to head off any comments i'm mixed race and i guess i'd now be considered 'middle class', but i grew up in council houses which is why i think i'm in a fairly unique position to see it from both sides.

    • @sansculottist
      @sansculottist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Fortress Europa Certainly, focussing this on white people in general is wrong. If some poor working class whites move into a neighbourhood, nothing happens. It's hip middle class entrepreneurs and artists (who are overproportionally white, obviously) who really kickstart gentrification. It's more of a class issue. One should still be aware that the people who make this about race have probably themselves experienced considerable racism and bring forth racist behaviour as a means of defending their dignity. Doesnt make it right or not racist, but you have to keep the right perspective - this isn't an isolated problem of people being racist against whites, it's a racist vicious circle.

    • @adonizi
      @adonizi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Seba stian I disagree. I think this is racial, thats why these rioters use so much racial slurs. Its never a problem when rich white people move into poor white neighborhoods and its never a problem when rich blacks move to poor black neighborhoods. Its only ever a problem when rich white people move into poor non-white neighborhoods. We are biologically driven to be tribal. When people have the choice they segregate naturally. Thats why church congregations consists over 80% of one race. Thats why most neighborhoods consists of 90% of one race. People want their environment to reflect themselves. Thats why whites moving into a black neighborhood bringing different culture and businesses is disrupting that. Its a change they dont want. You see it in the comments too. Many here think these neighborhoods should be black or hispanic so that they reflect black and hispanic culture. Thats completely fine. My thing is dont then complain if white people want a white neighborhood that reflects their values.

    One way to resolve higher home prices is to tax the shit out of the capital gains from real estate sales unless you lived in the home for 20 years or more. That will force the flippers, and greedy bastards from constantly raising property rates what you see is a neighborhood one guy lists his house for 100k more rest follow then the entire neighborhood is now costing 100k more. You just tax that at 50% and put a damper on these greedy bastards. Once you get property prices down rent will go back down. Socal is turning from middle class to ultra rich now most homes be 1 million. Friend of mine lived in a rent controlled duplex house in LA for 30 years he pays like $1200 a month for a 2 million dollar home. The owner has offered to pay him $50k to move out so he can sell the property, but he refuses he doesn't want to live anywhere else. The law forces the owner to keep the rent locked in when he moved there in the early 90s. Now the owner is getting into his 70's my friend he is in his 50's so the property have to be given to the owners kids out live my friend. This is the issues with lot of property in Socal people who are middle class or lower middle class sitting on millions of dollars of property.

      Josh Abreu the reason they freak out because they will soon be displaced there are many hard working legal Latinos that will not be able to afford to live in Los Angeles. One good think transportation is improving (trains) are going to make it possible to live outside of Los Angeles and take the train home but not for those that need their vehicle for work.

    • @RubenRabitt
      @RubenRabitt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. I'm Latino too. I actually went to Boyle heights this past year to try to play some music at this local radio show, and those people from that "Defend Boyle Heights" movement were treating me like I was an invader. My great- grandparents lived there since the '20's and those idiots told me they didn't want me to perform because I wasn't a person of color. I'm a white skinned Hispanic and they even showed me discrimination. Those people are fuckin' stupid and don't stand for the real Latinos. They're highly ignorant and masquerade as intellectuals. They're embarrassing themselves and are highly hypocritical. I feel they're less afraid of gentrification itself, and are more jealous of other people (whether they're trust fund hipsters who only have art galleries or coffee shops because of their parents money is beside the point) who are able to open up places they wish they could afford. If they could assimilate, and be accepted they would not complain. I've experienced racism deep racism from those people for being white. They call me "blessed" sarcastically in Spanish because of my light skin and always try to condescend me. Anyone who doesn't look like George Lopez and kisses their ass is an enemy to them. My thing about the fact that CA was Mexico is just the point that before any white people were living in the metropolitan of L.A. there were ranches of Mexican and Indigenous people. Thanks for the response bro.

I do believe everyone would be happier. Theres a direct correlation with how much racial diversity is in a state and how happy it is. LA is the most diverse and least happy. The more homogeneous the state is the happier they are. Study by Robert Putnam confirms this too.

Our neighborhoods indeed do have problems, but capitalist never wanna help fix the problem so they just push it out and move it elsewhere. We already commute a lot for our jobs imagine being pushed out to the outskirts of LA. Also our neighborhoods are our fucking HOMES. Our culture is in there and it sucks to see it washed out. Most urbanites rent. When property value rises, the rent does too. Natives will be priced out of their homes because the rent will be too steep. The natives will not benefit at all from gentrification. I normally like Joe Rogan, but he is ignorant about this topic.

    • @sinastaninja

      I never said that these people have a right to be where they are. I was just explaining why gentrification only benefits the people moving in and screws over the people who live there. You are raising an argument that wasn't even made. Your example is also really bad, given that being a renter and a squatter (Gypsy) are COMPLETELY different things. The city can legally kick out a squatter whenever they want. The owner of a building has to at least wait until a renter defaults on payments or their lease has expired.
      And your point that the natives left in the 60s is dubious. A native of neighborhood is anyone who grew up in a certain neighborhood. So, all people who grew up in a certain neighborhood "left in the 60s"? That makes no sense.
      And the point of gentrification is not "diversity". Your point about "92% of one race" is irrelevant because I never even brought up diversity.

    • @sinastaninja
      @sinastaninja 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Thelondonbadger
      That is not diversity. No one is trying to say an all black/Mexican neighborhood is "diverse". You keep raising issues that no one is even making. Im also confused why you keep brining up diversity. That is completely irrelevant. I dont care if these areas are "diverse", nor did I even use the word.
      And there is a BIG difference between protesting people form moving in because you are scared of being priced out and protesting people moving in simply because you don't like the way they look. You are talking about two completely different social phenomenas here.

      I live right here in LA and I’m literally watching these neighborhoods change seemingly overnight. When you start opening shops that bring values up cost of living jumps. Unless you own (most rent) you’re screwed. Along with rent doubling or tripling costs of general life expense is now high. People are moving out of these places in droves that have lived there for decades and they’re moving to undesirable places like the outskirts of Vegas. It’s hard to understand why this is bad but it boils down to culture. LA has a long rich culture that’s celebrated in movies and film that it’s literally chasing out with overpriced coffee. It’s a real shame.

      If you leave them to live in the neighborhoods that they turned to shit, riddled with crime; they complain that you are racist and don't care about minority communities and don't want to invest in them therefore its your fault that they live in shit conditions.
      If you try to invest in and revitalize their community and diversify it (meaning adding white people there so its not just minorities) then they claim that you are gentrifying the neighborhood and trying to price them out of their community.
