  • Day 75 in my diary "A Year in the Life of a Miniaturist' was all about birds! Big ones, small ones, sketching them, making them, while all the time thinking about how they will all fit together in the miniature aviary I am creating for my Beacon Hill Dolls House. Some of the video turned out a bit blurred, so I have created a short from a series of still photos, to give a better idea. Check in my You Tube Shorts folder for it. Let me know what you think of them all. Regards, Jill.

I hope so. My problem is the more I make the more ideas I get. They will need nesting boxes! Yikes.

I guess at 1/4 inch the idea is to create an illusion of a bird…….my eyesight would not allow me to see the details, let alone make them. Your birds look very convincing Jill. 👏👏

I think it is about accepting what will be acceptable!! Ha ha. I don't think my little birds are masterpieces and wouldn't stand up to extremely close up scrutiny but it is all about effect isn't it?

They are demanding baby dinosaurs really and the more I make the more they want to be made. I am going to have to be strong about this. However, quails may be coming up,.

They’re just spectacular! You never cease to amaze me!
And .. you have the hands of a true artist … paint covered, glue splotched … creativity in process! Love it!

The aviary is going to be simply fabulous, I love those little birds. Thanks for sharing your technique. Thanks to your husband too, for his excellent camera work I'm intrigued by the possibility of water effect on that back wall. Would that be a resin? Ooooh, can't wait, your creations are stunning.

Thank you so much! Yes, I will be using resin for the water. I have tried other water effects in the past but resin remains clear.

What fun you seem to have had sitting creating beautiful birds all day. They look wonderful and you've put so much thought into the right scales and the posing too so they aren't just static little figures.Intrigued by the water running down the back wall in amongst the moss. Will there be any ground birds in the bottom that clear up all the dropped feed and add further interest?I know over here in the UK in real avairies they often have Quails and Partridges and Golden Pheasants and things like that but not sure what you would have over in New Zealand. The water could even flow down into a shallow pool and you could have really fancy ducks like Mandarins oh the ideas could go on forever! Have lots of fun!Best wishes from Yorkshire Dales England.

We have small quails in NZ. The male has a little feather aerial on top of his head. Water yes, large pond no! Ducks! You are getting the whip out here Robin.

Too cute! Are there little wires inside those tiny bodies? Thinking especially about the tiny feet.

Yes, usually for the wee ones i use a fine copper wire. See my budgie tutorial for feet if you would like to know more.
