As someone who works for a VW and Mazda dealership, I’d go for the Golf GTI only if it’s the previous generation. The newest generation is definitely fast and fun but that infotainment system gives me nightmares. Not only is it hard to use but it lags in the winter on cold days. Other than that the performance is head and shoulders above Mazda. The Mazda will definitely last longer and use nicer materials but the GTI is much more enjoyable with more “up to date” tech.
I chose the Mazda in the non-Premium Plus trim over the base GTI at the same price for AWD, sunroof, better stereo, far better buttons/ergonomics, adaptive headlights, etc. But absolutely, the first things I did was wider wheels and tires, blacked out the window trim, covered the interior gloss black and added strut tower brace as the chassis was not originally designed for the weight of the turbo engine. I have a JB4, intake and exhaust as well and hit the 1/4 in 13.5 but def miss not having LSD's and IRS still for sure. Also, still waiting for the imminent launch of an actual ECU tune that gets rid of the SUV powerband tune Mazda puts even on this car... The GTI is indeed still the better drivers car, but the Mazda is a good value if you are willing to do some mods and prefer the extra features.
@@DanielBrownOre marked up the wrx? Hmm I’m in upstate ny dealers up here have been not marking up any cars for except corvette f150 lighting bronco Escalade but even the Elantra N 6 speed for 34k us a terrific car for the money and outperforms the gti too
@@cbruno12180 Yep, when I bought it last May even the Elantra N was marked up $5k, only the Mazda and GTI (with careful searching) wasn't marked up in what I was considering, this on the west coast, Portland OR suburbs. But also, I wanted some sportiness but not all out track car so the Mazda with some mods was a good choice.
Owned two mazdaspeed3’s and they were so much fun. This is a nice hatch, good mpg and nice interior if your looking for that. As an enthusiast I’m very happy with my Veloster N manual that is about 5k less and so much more fun, louder, quicker and that’s what I look for. Great video as usual.
I went with the Mazda regular base "Premium" instead of Premium Plus and at the time last May was a good $5-6k less than the Elantra N at the time because they were marked up $5k and the Mazda wasn't... Now, TBH, I needed to go with AT because GF can't drive manual, but I def wish I had a DCT like the Hyundai's and GTI have for sure!
I like both and how they are designed. I will say though I kinda like how VW made their GTI look like a small an cute hatchback. Mazda still did amazing with this as well.
NGL, I chose the Mazda over the GTI for the features for the same money but the GTI is def still the better drivers car too with better brakes, suspension (previous gen Golf R real IRS), DCT trans, front-LSD, and fairly cheap tunes that adds tons of safe power.. but the Mazda kills it in overall looks and all real and good feeling buttons on the inside on top of better stereo, AWD, sunroof, adaptive LED's, HUD, etc... so it comes down to personal preference, I took the Mazda and have dropped about $5k
Hoping to see a refresh for 2024, faster transmission or manual would nice. I have the 2021 AWD Turbo hatch and still haven’t found anything I’d rather have for the same $$.
personally bought it for daily driver and not a hothatch and mainly cause of reliability, good punchy and old school drive train compare to others and ofc the amazing looking exterior and interior
I had a Golf TDI which I took the cash package for during diesel-gate. I used that to buy a Mazda 3. I drive in a larger city with plenty of traffic and people who like to never fully pass (so they hang out beside you) and I also take long road trips. I really miss my Golf for a lot of internal components that the Mazda doesn't have. I also miss how steady and reliable the Golf steering felt on curves.
Mazda has really done a great job coming back. For its price, the Mazda 3 definitely is a better bang for your buck against the Mk 8 GTI. The new Golf’s interior is really holding it back. I do however wish that the top trims engine, which is really really good, was available in a 6 spd manual. It’s Japanese so its going to last 15 years 400,000 miles. Now the 7spd PDk auto in the GTI is nice, but, the better car to buy for your money is the Jetta GLI with the 6 spd manual. It is a very well made car in its segment and uses the very good ea888 engine with a very good user interface and the interior that the GTI should have gotten. I would like to see Mazda put the new 3.3L I-6 in a refreshed Mazda 6 to make it a very nice sport sedan
People never seem to give the full story of hatch space comparing the VW Golf and the Mazda3. Everyone just says the Golf's is bigger, but they clearly aren't trying to put anything long in the back. My previous DD (that my son now drives) was the 2014 Mazda3. My current one is a 2018 (MK7.5) VW Golf R. I use my car to haul my XL frame road bicycles around to trails, and I can say that those bikes fit far better in the 3 than in the R. I could get a bike in the 3 and still fit a passenger in the front seat. In the Golf, no way in hell. The seat has to be all the way forward to get a bike in the back. I believe, when I was researching for my new DD, I found that the MK7 Golf was about 6 inches shorter than my 3, and that appears to be entirely in the hatch area. I guess I can't say for sure how the current 3 compares to my (better driving) 2014, though.
I'd love to be able to find out where to purchase the shark fin, my mazda 3 isn't the turbo unfortunately, it was a little out of our price range here in the UK, we've settled on the sport lux version, which is just as nice but without the aero kit, or the nice spoiler.. does anyone know where to purchase the shark fin for this car? Thanks and great video
it's simple if you looking for nicer low ride with awd turbo for commute everyday, Mazda 3 turbo is only choice from market, if your doctor said you only can drive DCT you go VW or KIAHYUNDAI, rear beam suspension won't bother you if you have enough skill to under control on it
Mazda! Let's goooo! Love the Mazda3. Hate the price though. Why pay $38,000 for a compact car when you can get a CX-5 for under that? Hopefully they bring back the Mazda6 and give us the option of AWD. Would be really cool if they put that CX-90 engine in the Mazda6. Great review Joe!
@@markcoopers1930 I have a 21 CX-5 Grand Touring, think I paid under $35,000 for it and only had 3000 miles on it. But if some people aren't gonna have kids, or just like sitting lower to the ground while driving? The Mazda3 is a good choice.
@@VileSinner666 its also not just a lower position. Less weight in general feels better (well, as long as its actually done right). I own a CX-5 and its great, however i wouldnt necessarily say it drives better or feels more satisfying than my old toyota 86 or the mazda turbo i drove a couple weeks ago. It does great, but the mazda3 weight savings goes a long way
I had a Mazda speed3 turbo from 2010 to 2020 in blue. It was a great car until somebody rammed it while it was parked in front of my car in 2020. I thought for sure that the insurance company was gonna declared it totaled so I bought a 2020 STI. But after a week at the shop, the insurance company told me that they fix it. So, I ended up selling it. That car was great except for the torque steering when I really get on it. Nothing ever went wrong on that speed3. It was a great car. I also think that it looks better than the current one. I just wished it had the all wheel drive..
I’ve got a 21 cx30 turbo up here in the Edmonton area Alberta Canada. I’ve had a 17 GT mustangs , 19 LT1 Camaro, old school E55 AMG Benz .. and more. This Mazda is a decent whip. It’s pretty fun. Fairly Smooth, quiet cabin. Excellent zipping around town in the snow. Mazda must of knew I like to get er sideways around the corners and bends. They’ve managed that without a TC button also. It’s a keeper. And I may add a MX5 to the parkade. We’ll see how one of those rings out when the snow melts.
I have a 2023 Mazda 3 hb turbo. I bought it because of the looks and AWD, and then it's made in Japan. It has a lot of minor problems. After I picked up the car, I found that its steering wheel was crooked. I went to three different Mazda dealers to perform four-wheel alignment but could not solve this problem. To this day, its steering wheel is still a little crooked and the damping of left and right steering is different. . There are some flaws with the interior fit and finish, and what bothers me the most is that the interior has too many squeaks in different places. Another time its speakers didn't work and didn't come back on until 3 days later. I would have thought that being made in Japan would be more reliable, but yes, these are the issues I've had and apparently Mazda can't fix them. I also have a 2023 Mazda cx5, which doesn't have so many problems, except for the speaker stopping working for a day. It is obvious that the cx5 has better assembly workmanship and reliability, which can also explain why the cx5 is Mazda's best-selling model.
i have a 2019 non turbo (wasnt available) and love it. have had 2 GTis and and jetta, i would get the mazda again in the turbo. not that the GTI isnt awesome, but ill take the reliability of mazda and i prefer the look too. also i like the more basic tech. i barely use the screen, usualy turn it off.
My '17 Mazda 3 has the touch screen (usable when stopped), but I always use the rotary dial. Kind of a tough choice (Turbo/ NA) because the NA 2.5L is swift, and Turbo adds a significant $.
I'm a GTI Person, I have had many VWs but I really like this Mazda. I do not like the 4DR GTIs. I prefer the two doors. (which they do not have anymore in the US)
I love it!!! Blah blah blah......we're gonna go ON THROTTLE again! I think it looks really sharp and I think as a daily driver especially in high traffic locations like Los Angeles the 6 speed is perfect, better than a CVT. This whole thing comes across as a grown up Mazda Speed 3 for the current times.
I will pick Mazda3 everytime over the GTI, because it's way more reliable. Less trips to the mechanic and I like that it's AWD and it looks better in my opinion.

I had a Mazda 3 grand touring sedan and loved it. I would take this over the gti more power I wish the exhaust sounded better on the Mazda but for the price those two I would recommend a 2022 Veloster N cause I love mine and it’s the same price and you get more for the buck.
Haven't finished the video but thanks for bringing up the Veloster N. Tons of people don't use it as a hatchback comparison anymore since it was announced they ceased making them, yet all around was a great car.
I have this car and it's amazing. Swap to coilovers and some bolts on what's a gti? The fit and finish I constantly get compliments cant say the same for my buddy's cheapish gti interior. Plus 2024 has 10.8" screen, touch, wireless android auto 👌🏽
GTI for me, LSD, rear independent suspension, weight and manual would just be a bit more fun through the twisties. Both look great to me. I wouldn’t be worried about build quality on either cars. The VW just has more of what I want in a car.
I got to zonk one thing. You missed the most important button in the car. The Auto Stop button. It’s a sciatic nerve saver at red lights and if you are stuck in traffic. In my opinion every car should have this option now. Real talk, I only watch your reviews now. Your attention to detail is top notch!
Don't buy it, Torsion beam rear suspension is cheap and blind spot visibility is horrible and that rotary knob/ dial infotainment system is trash......
@@toeleg Whatever, don't need Mazda put the infotainment system so far back on the dash like drivers are children and don't even say its safer that nonsense......Civic, Corolla better options with multi link rear suspension, not some torsion beam.......
Normally I would go for the hatchback in any car. However, in this particular case the sedan is so much better looking than the hatchback I would go for that. I have driven the GTI, and this car. I know many people say the GTI is the benchmark for the hot hatchback, but I picked the Fiesta ST after driving the GTI. The Fiesta ST was so much more fun. This car is more fun than the GTI in my opinion, and probably much more reliable.
If you put comfort first...Mazda 3. If you want performance...Golf GTl, or Civic Si. We had three Mazda 3's in 2020. Now, since that suspension swap, we now own NONE. Living in Nevada and BC Mountains, handling is everything.
Previous 2017 GTI owner here. Loved that car. But out Car shopping now and could not wait for MK8 GTI (and R) to come out. Finally found Autobahn GTI trim to sit in and test drive. Still a lively, tossable hatch and plenty quick. However: - a cynical cost cutting regime has really given it a ‘econonobox’ feel inside. Previous editions had fit and feel of an Audi. Not the MK 8. - haptic controls are dealbreaker for me. Not confident they will respond consistently over time. No HVAC knobs or switches - must access the touchscreen for fan, temperature, or those sliders, Really? - MSRP $41360 Yikes! Drove Mazda 3 Turbo. Ordered mine (Polymetal grey w red interior) Not cheap at $37000 but a terrific drive, quiet, plenty fast enough, refined interior, and let’s be serious -many of these reviewers would not be able to tell whether it had a multi-link or torsion beam rear end, or could explain the difference. Lastly, love how all these reviewers ‘zonk’ this car for its 6 speed torque converter or the solid rear axle, etc, etc., BEFORE the drive segment, then during the drive they gush about how pleasantly surprised you’ll be. how fast, how smooth, how composed it handles. Cracks me up.
Had one of these as a rental car for a few days. I thought it was a pretty awesome car. I was surprised how much I liked the rotary knob for the infotainment. I find it much more difficult to use touch controls on the screen while driving compared to having my hand planted and using a knob or touch pad. My only issue is I am far from a skinny guy and the interior was uncomfortably small for me. Which isn't helped by coming from a challenger...
I've a 2021 Mazda 3 Turbo and the splitter keeps finding those concrete bumpers in parking lots. Kind of cracked, car washes warn me about it. Maybe some tape will help… Nothing like coming onto a freeway, getting around traffic, and suddenly realizing we're doing 85 (despite the useful HUD). Back down to keep the CHiPs happy… 😅

Escalade but even the Elantra N 6 speed for 34k us a terrific car for the money and outperforms the gti too
@@cbruno12180 Yep, when I bought it last May even the Elantra N was marked up $5k, only the Mazda and GTI (with careful searching) wasn't marked up in what I was considering, this on the west coast, Portland OR suburbs. But also, I wanted some sportiness but not all out track car so the Mazda with some mods was a good choice.
Mazda design is timeless.....evergreen....i bet after 15-20years,this mazda3 will still hold it looks....classy....just like the alfa
As a VN owner as well, totally get it.
Less reliable, Mazda has proven reliability..
My. Friend has that Hyundai in a pale light blue, fun to drive I agree and look and sound great..
Coming from old gmc jimmy. I’m in love with my Mazda 3 hatchback! What a joyful car 🚗. Love everything about it honestly.
That is so fantastic!
I like both and how they are designed. I will say though I kinda like how VW made their GTI look like a small an cute hatchback. Mazda still did amazing with this as well.
small is a Mini Cooper or Fiesta ST, a Golf is as long as an early 2000's audi a4 but wider
@@PaulTC97 That’s your opinion, I see it as a small vehicle and that’s my opinion.
Great looking Sport hatch with a lot of get up and go !!
You nailed it Frank!
Hoping to see a refresh for 2024, faster transmission or manual would nice. I have the 2021 AWD Turbo hatch and still haven’t found anything I’d rather have for the same $$.
I hope the new 8spd transmission will get into the 3s.
@@UIOP336 na i want a facelift too
Six speed transmission is simple and reliable. It’s just under tired. New wheels with Michelin PS4’s in 255 35 18 and it’s perfect.
I AGREE TITS under tired

This Mazda3 hatchback looks so cool and it’s fun! The red stitching looks so inspired.
I am glad that you are liking this one.
I've owned a Mazda 3 and now a 5... Best cars I've ever owned!!!
That is so great to hear!

personally bought it for daily driver and not a hothatch and mainly cause of reliability, good punchy and old school drive train compare to others and ofc the amazing looking exterior and interior
Got this model last July and absolutely love it. Such a fun daily driver. And the interior 🤌
Slightly timely. A friend of mine drives a Mazda 3 hatchback and I'm starting to think about looking at a NON turbo one with FWD.
That is really great Shawn!
What up Joe? Mazda time!
Just bought one 2 days ago, going to the dealership to pick it up tomorrow :)
Another great and fun to watch review😊
I went with the 2022 MZD3 Turbo. Very good car to drive and push to some reasonable limits.
Better built, more reliable, Cheaper to maintain, better styling that alone in my books is a Win, Win.
I just wouldn't buy a Golf. Guess i wouldn't buy a VW for that matter. I've never driven one of these, but i like it.
Nice Mazda. And the awd is a plus.
This is so very true Noel!
My 22' turbo was 33k. And I both don't need the extra space and preferred the lower driving position. But the CX-5 turbo is really good value too.
It does great, but the mazda3 weight savings goes a long way
@@DysphoriaRL I get that.

Stunning interior mazda as always and review! Can't wait for the CX 90 Review
Stay tuned!
Good ol days when I bought my 07 Mazda 3 for 13k brand new. No ABS, traction control, manual doors and windows. Loved that thing

(which they do not have anymore in the US)
So you like the 4 door Mazda but not the 4 door Gti? Makes sense.
Been a big Mazda fan for decades, have owned several. Really looking forward to the new 3.3L inline 6 w/ turbo though. 🤤
That is going to be good!

Interior space is the biggest flaw of the Mazda 3. If this was comparable in size to the civic, we'd be in business
True, but it has more interior space than both the Corolla and Corolla hatch, it's other main competition
I have this model in red and I love it so much
I like a prop rod. I had a 2003 Golf TDI with hood struts. I had to replace them. A prop rod never goes out.
I had a Mazda 3 grand touring sedan and loved it. I would take this over the gti more power I wish the exhaust sounded better on the Mazda but for the price those two I would recommend a 2022 Veloster N cause I love mine and it’s the same price and you get more for the buck.
Thanks for sharing that great feedback from your personal experience!
Haven't finished the video but thanks for bringing up the Veloster N. Tons of people don't use it as a hatchback comparison anymore since it was announced they ceased making them, yet all around was a great car.
As an owner of a VN, it has been so fun.
Hey Raiti's Rides How Are You Can You Make The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV SE: Great Video Have A Nice Day

You can do it!
Such a nice looking car! Elegant and sporty
I bought my Mazda 3 hatch! He had me at big Mac, large fry, and a Pepsi 😂
Jus picked up a 2023 brand new for 28k with the turbo. Sweet ride for the price! I’m stoked.
I have this car and it's amazing. Swap to coilovers and some bolts on what's a gti? The fit and finish I constantly get compliments cant say the same for my buddy's cheapish gti interior. Plus 2024 has 10.8" screen, touch, wireless android auto 👌🏽
I dont even care about the details I just like the look of the car. The design is awesome and the shape. Nice good looking shape hatchback.
Mazda did a great job with this one.
GTI for me, LSD, rear independent suspension, weight and manual would just be a bit more fun through the twisties. Both look great to me. I wouldn’t be worried about build quality on either cars. The VW just has more of what I want in a car.
Wish it had a manual option, I would be much more interested in this then.
You and me both!
I got to zonk one thing. You missed the most important button in the car. The Auto Stop button. It’s a sciatic nerve saver at red lights and if you are stuck in traffic. In my opinion every car should have this option now. Real talk, I only watch your reviews now. Your attention to detail is top notch!
I believe you meant Auto Hold
2:28 when he said “Splitter” I can feel the spit fly onto my face
Well, my decision to wait for 2024 model paid off. Updated screen, and wireless conectivity will be included
I love talking about whats going on here!
can you not use this as a touchscreen though when you connect apple car play or Android auto?
no
Joe this Mazda 3 is growing on me absolutely sick very nice 👌
Don't buy it, Torsion beam rear suspension is cheap and blind spot visibility is horrible and that rotary knob/ dial infotainment system is trash......
@@crow_2k11beatsbydre8 infotainment is the best on the market lol
@@toeleg Whatever, don't need Mazda put the infotainment system so far back on the dash like drivers are children and don't even say its safer that nonsense......Civic, Corolla better options with multi link rear suspension, not some torsion beam.......
this might be a stupid question, whats the difference between the Mazda 3 1.5 vs 2.0 (GT)? besides the engine of course
I’ve had mine for about a month and the only complaints I have are that the infotainment screen rattles and so does the left driver side speaker
Vehicle needs a redesign......

I own currently 04 Subaru Manual xt im been looking for a car but im not convinced of any just yet
However:
- a cynical cost cutting regime has really given it a ‘econonobox’ feel inside. Previous editions had fit and feel of an Audi. Not the MK 8.
- haptic controls are dealbreaker for me. Not confident they will respond consistently over time. No HVAC knobs or switches - must access the touchscreen for fan, temperature, or those sliders, Really?
- MSRP $41360
Yikes!
Drove Mazda 3 Turbo. Ordered mine (Polymetal grey w red interior)
Not cheap at $37000 but a terrific drive, quiet, plenty fast enough, refined interior, and let’s be serious -many of these reviewers would not be able to tell whether it had a multi-link or torsion beam rear end, or could explain the difference.
I have a 23 M3TH and I love it to death. Put a corksport sri on that sucker and it's really nice! Very happy with this car
That is some great experience that you shared
Joe, you need a t shirt in your merch section that says, "If you're ready I'm ready." :)
I like the way you think!
I learnt to drive on a Mazda 929 manual transmission in Trinidad. Good cars
And again though the trunk space is 22 ft in the Mazda and 13 cubic feet for the sedan version
