At 8:33 that groove in the rim is called the "channel". It is midway across the rim (midway down in the position on the machine), it is about 4 inches wide (up and down in this position on the machine) and two inches deep (toward the shaft on the machine). As you lever the rod to pop up the bead, you MUST push as much of the rest of the bead into the channel (AHEAD of the bar pry point and all the way to the other side OPPOSITE of the pry point and any further if you can). You have to KEEP that leading bead pushed in the Channel as you push the bar around the shaft as it lifts the bead. It takes practice because the bead will "fight you" and want to pop up toward the rim lip. The whole idea is to keep as much of the bead as possible in the channel to give you plenty of SLACK at the the pry point to easily lift and pop the bead over the rim lip as you go around. Staring the rotation is the most difficult part because you need as much of the bead in the channel to get going, as more and more of the bead is lifted up over the lip as you go around, it gets easier. But keep that bead in the channel until the poped up portion of the bead is now providing slack for the opposite side. You are doing TWO critical and subtle operations at once (most people don't even see the subtle pushing of the bead into the channel because you can't see it (tires are not clear) - its all done by feel. Go slow and practice makes perfect. Once you master the technique, you will not need to lubricate the bead (which can cause corrosion and rim leaks if all moisture from the lubricant is not removed). Many people use lubricant when putting on (mounting) a tire and forget to COMPLETELY DRY off the bead, rim, and ANY water that gets inside the tire and rim. Any water (even a few drops) can cause corrosion and leaks. If you fail to keep the bead in the channel and force the pry bar, you will DAMAGE the bead and thus destroy the tire beyond use. Go slow, if it seems suck, DONT force it... back off and try again giving more attention to keeping the bead in the channel.
Notice how many times I mentioned "bead in the channel"... that is what makes sucessful and easy tire mounting/unmounting possible.

I know he knows what he is doing. Just that doggone murphy getting in the way. I had fun watching the video! He tries so hard to get where he wants to be it works. He is correct there are alot of people that complain when they are to blame about hobo freight. We still like it cuz nothing is perfect! Thank for the good video.

Thanks man! Just remember you can never use too much lube! A trick I came up with to get a small tire bead off once… I rigged the $15 HF vacuum pump to the valve stem, and when it pulled it enough that it started to leak, I started spraying the soapy water! If you can just get a tiny bit in somewhere, patience and more lube will pay off!

Something not related to the subject of this video. When I was 44 years old, I would become short winded just like you do when I would do simple tasks. Come to find out, thank goodness I did, I had major blockages in my left main arteries of my heart. WIDOW MAKER. That was 20 years ago and I'm more healthy now than ever before. Pay attention to little signs your body is telling you. I would not have survived an eventual heart attack. Great video. Now get checked out.

Good idea with the scotch bright pad!
I also bought a can of bead sealer tar for the rim and I run my grinder with the wire basket around the bead "Grove".
I worked at a pro shop for several years and this is how we did it there too.
My HF one is fine but I did break the nut out of the top of my old one. I may have overtightened it. But heck I probably changed 30 tires with it so it paid for itself. 😁

So far, just the crappy welds on that x-washer thing have been an issue. I put proper welds on it, so no biggie. 2 weeks, and the temps dropped 65 degrees since the day I did that, and those tires are still aired up! Pretty happy about that!

See 14:05 with your RED bar the wrong way around (any red bar) you'll stuff the rubber really quickly, but use the "provided" duck-bill on the other end of that red bar (any RED bar) the tire will float on easy.
No huffing & puffing & gosh buggah, another blown rubber.

I didn't realize that a tire could be removed without some air power assistance. The main thing I saw with that tool is that the base needs to be bigger so it don't wiggle so much. That movement will eventually pull your anchors out of the floor.

get yerself a gallon of Black Jack Tire Repair BJK-LB-800 Tire Mounting Lubricant, and, a red Straight Lube Bucket for Coats Changers with 3 Lube Swabs that are 11.5" Length, and then slather away at all the surfaces, then go to town on your tire changin job. Then it doesn't matter if there's any leftover liquid anywhere on the rim or in the tire when your job's all done. The Black Jack is good for your tire, doesn't hurt the rim, and helps seal the bead even better.

I didn’t think anyone could change a Truck Tire or anything like 17” inch or larger with that whimsy Tire-changer tool but just goes to show you if there’s a will there’s a way 😮 p.s. good tip on those tire spoons I didn’t know about that. Where did you say you got them?

@@scottyshomesteaduniversity7778 and wendyfyke55. You can even do Monster Truck tires (on the ground) with a few extra tire spoons and some wooden shims you shove in around the tire that you tap in with a rubber mallot to force and hold the bead in the channel. I did it and won a $100 bet. People think the bead stretches when mounting/dismounting a tire.... Nope! the bead is the least flexible part of any tire and is designed NOT to stretch. It should take little effort to lift the bead from the rim, it is bit harder to get going, but if you "work the bead/channel" properly all around as you go, even a Monster Truck tire can be done by hand without hydraulics.
A little lubrication helps and maybe an extra hand to work the extra spoons, but I did it myself with no help and no lube to win the bet. It took five minutes to get both beads off. Now, "breaking a bead" from the rim of a Monster Truck tire is very difficult and was not part of the bet. I would have to use my scissor jack with duck bill adapter and a pole to a sturdy joist in the ceiling trick for that. That is what I have in my garage at home, 4 long tire spoons, scissors jack, 3 foot breaker bar for the jack, hand made bead breaker duck bill adapter, steel pole, 8 hand made wooden bead shims, rubber mallot, and a ceiling stud that is counter weighted above to handle extra upward force. I also use a cargo strap with ratchet latch to squeeze the tire treads inward to force the beads against the rim lips when filling the the tire with air... a must have for 18+ inch rims.
Forgot to mention, the steel pole (pipe) is tethered to the joist with some bolts and a chain so it doesn't come crashing down on me when the bead breaks. I wear heavy duty leather gloves, heavy duty safety goggles, headphones (why not its part of my safety board), and a construction helmet when I do this.

@@QUIX4Uyeah, the trick is to keep the bar up high as you rotate in the correct direction so it will guide the bead down into the rim. If you keep it horizontal while doing it, the angle of the ramp is too shallow and it's going to slip out.

  • @jacquespoirier9071

your method is OK, the original HF tire bar is not good, at least, it needs finessing with a grinder to remove the sharp edges,
what I done is that I fabricated a bar with plastic tips so it does not cause damege to the rims or the tires and it is much easier to drive than the original bar. I don't use the small tire bars with my bar.
