  • Topical conversation about the contrast between the way the police were portrayed in TV drama against the reality which Newman and Garnett tried to deliver. Note the contrasting attitudes from the Met Commissioner and a former operational detective.
Taken from Cops on the Box, a themed evening on BBC2 from 1993 covering the evolution of the police series on television from the 50s onwards.

Perhaps (in my opinion) the most influential documentary style fictional drama about the UK criminal justice system ever made - bar none!
Not many TV programs cause questions to be asked in the House of Commons (which this one did).
The most telling contemporary comment made about this series came from a former Chief Constable (of Oxfordshire I think?) who had recently retired about the time the series was broadcast (so could speak freely on the subject). When asked (by the media because it was a topical matter at the time) about the authenticity of characters portrayed in the series, he replied that it was about right and he wouldn't significantly change anything in the script - says it all really?
