One thing I will tell new designers, coming from me, I have been in the industry for 10 years plus without attending any of the schools listed above. You do not need to, in order to become successful, it all about who you know, keep your options opens, sign up with head hunters, and if you want to always have a job go into “computer aided design” this is where you create prints for garments, in illustrator, photoshop, etc... the pay is great. This is a cut throat industry and good luck!
Honestly, since it is about who you know, which I personally have expected and known. The best thing to ALSO do is make sure you can easily speak to anyone and not a introvert like many people, so being able to network at the right time is the perfect example of this
Do you have to know how to sew to get into a fashion school. I just got into fashion and designing and I’m just wondering do u have to know how to sew?
I’m 13 and my mind is SET on FIT. I’ve already toured it and got the THICC book of information. i’m so passionate about my designs and once I share them, I’m sure I can become successful. You make me feel like I can achieve my goal.
Heyyy I’m 13 as well, and I want to educate myself more on fashion, how much do you know about fashion? I’d love to get started on my research and would want a little piece of advice on where to begin at....
Karen look online and in books, start creating ur own designs and u definitely need to learn how to sew. i think the key to success is being different so try to make the impossible possible. that’s how i like to do it. if u don’t know how to style, look up basic videos on youtube. hope this helped!! dm me on insta @amelia.corazon if u need any more help
Hi im 14, we are pretty close in age. I love fashion too and I also really want to go to FIT, but I am very bad at drawing like veryy bad, do you have any tips or things I can fo to improve or learn how to sketch? Also if you know how to sew, where did you learn? Are you self taught? I am currently learning how to sew and I can say that it is a bit hard but I will get there eventually. Any other tips please?? I would love to hear some things from people my age who like the same things as me😊😊 Also do you have like any blogs or accounts where you show your work?
Kiara Vaso i’m actually 14 now too! my b day is in march. i’m not self taught, my grandma teaches me. i don’t have any accounts showing my work no. i great way to promote ur work is in person! wear ur clothes, style them, walk around the city. and when people ask where u got stuff, h say u made it! it’s so fun to see the look on their faces, especially when ur young. if u want to improve your drawing skill for fashion design, i recommend first getting down a signature model that carry’s the same body type throughout ur collection. once u just get down the model, work on textures. look up “how to draw denim” or “how to draw satin” and practice. then perspective plays a big role, u need to be able to draw those little wrinkles and u need to have ur jeans not look cartoonish. i learned from studying others’ work on Pinterest. and last, speed. it’ll come naturally after u master ur style of drawing that ur comfortable with. a tip i have for u is to always shoot for the highest rather than just getting a piece done. i always use a french seam in my clothes because it doesn’t show any raw hems. i’m really glad u want to go to fit! i wish u the greatest of luck!
Amelia Corazon Thanks you so much for your advice, i rlly appreciate it. I am going to do what you told me. Once again thanks a lot and I rlly hope u get into ur dream school😊
I’ve been really struggling with my art and seeing your art style and that the fashion sketches don’t all have to look the same has definitely helped me
i have been waiting for a video like this for the longest time ever!!!! thank you so much! fit is my dream school and i am so so happy for you! can’t wait to see more college videos. you came up on my recommendations and now i’m 100% subscribing i love your content. THANK YOU!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Super helpful! i've been planning to get an MFA degree from parsons just to give myself some tough competition but was worried whether i'd be able to get in or not. Even though your portfolio was for a foundation year, it helped lessen my worries a little.
Hi loved the video ♡ I’m from india I am doing fashion designing my sketching good and I don’t enjoy sewing that much I’ll be graduate in 2020 I wanna apply in FIT which courses should I get in since you are in college you might help me ♡ xx
Hey Natalia, how's the experience so far studying fashion design and what are the materials needed for classes? Any advices as well? How's the school culture like? Are your classmates nice?
Hi! I adore your pieces they are so pretty! I hope you can answer a few of my questions: Where did you get the materials to sew? How did you learn to sew? What sewing machine do you have?
I love all of the items you showed in your portfolios! You really have a talent for sewing and I admire that! Have you decided where you're going to attend? Last year I was accepted to SCAD and I was waitlisted for PRATT, but I haven't decided on a fashion school yet. I thinking about LIM college so I can focus on the business side of fashion but I'm not sure what I want to do.
Love this video, it is way more detailed than others you can find. By the way, your designs are amazing and I admire deeply where your inspiration comes from. I am planning to apply to pretty much all of the schools you mentioned and I have a few questions! As far as I have seen, no one really showcases Men's Fashion, are you allowed to, would you personally recommend it? You see to be truly knowledgeable about sewing, is your knowledge self-taught, or are you taking Fashion Design classes? Will the schools care about other forms of art if you are applying for a specific major? (if you go undecided, can you pretty much submit all you have art-wise) I hope all these comment get to you and you can tell me what you think :) Congrats on all of your acceptances!
Thank you!!! I think showcasing men’s fashion would be SO good. Nobody ever thinks of doing so, therefore you’d stand out A LOT. Granted, you should also show regular women’s fashion too but I don’t see how men’s could be a bad idea! As far as my sewing skills and whatnot, I take sewing classes at my school so I was definitely not self-taught, just lots of years of practice! As far as other forms of art, go for it! Most art schools prefer that! Except for FIT, their requirements are a lot more strict, but I know that when I met with Parsons, Pratt, and SCAD, they recommended showing off multiple art mediums to show a range. Hope this helped! And good luck!!
Hi, this video was very useful to me as i was applying in parsons. I just had one inquiry that they have mentioned to upload the process work along with collection images. So, will i have to upload the art work images along with this images in slide room itself ?
I have never designed a single piece in my life but want to, I have styled over a thousand looks though and still have the visuals I put together for those stylings. I'm able to construct my own ideas for fashion based on those stylings and fairly easily (at least in my mind, but I'm down for the tussle with production) so I'm wondering can I send in some of those looks to the school in Paris I'm applying for. The looks embody soul from low-end to high-end streetwear, couture, trends both followed and broken. Im just not sure if that would be enough to be considered for such a school, if you have any feedback on how I can improve my portfolio that would be a great help.

This video was very helpful I have a question regarding the ACT and the SAT. Will i have to take one of those or both in order to apply to the school as an international student?
Hi Natalia, amazing video you've got. I have applied to several fashion schools and i'm required to submit a portfolio. I have few of my sketches that can pass for this and some of my sewing projects but my challenge is what software can i use to put all of these together?? Can't seem to find anybody talking about it.
hello yall, I just want some advice. I'm in Pre-Med{Medical Academy} but I'm still confused between Medical Academy and Fashion Designer. I don't like Medical im just in it because my parents want me to be a Pharmacist but they don't notice that love Fashion and so creative I want to tell them but I don't know how to come out with this because I know they gonna be so mad.
Going to a good fashion college like FIT can guarantee you a job after graduating. It’s not a “starving artist” kind of deal. Just do your research and present it like that! Best of luck!!
You definitely do NOT want to spend the rest of your life doing something you do not like doing. You will regret not coming out and saying you love fashion because in the long run, it won't make you happy.
Hello Honestly I’m telling you this right now ( 33 yr old woman with my BFA in fashion) do not go into this field unless you plan on working for yourself later down the road. I have designed for Walmart, Macy’s, Victoria Secret, the list goes on, 10 years plus in the industry, it’s hell and all about who know who. I am currently going into the medical field and still work in the fashion industry working for myself, but I will say this again, do not go in this field, it’s nuts!!!! Going to FIT does not hold a job for you, I know many who have went there and changed careers.
Wait I'm at the beginning of the video I want to get into a fashion school, but like what I don't understand is if you have to create your own stuff with like your own fabric. Or like you put pieces together and style them together?
If you’re applying to fashion design, you have to DESIGN your own clothes and make them. Putting pieces together would be a fashion STYLIST, not designer.
i’m a sophomore in high school now and i really love fashion and want to do that as a career and i just need to work on a portfolio and i want to start doing it soon so i was just wondering what website did you use to create your portfolio because i thought yours looked great!!
Molly you should probably put all your stuff in a google drive folder ; and then when its time to apply to college you have everything somewhere already ; thankfully I go to a fashion design high school so I was taught to do this since my freshman year so that’s what I’d suggest you do ; and when it’s time to apply for college ; like she said you’ll get a email from them showing you where to go or for Parsons and a lot of other design schools ; the link will be on the common app
Did you ever consider FIDM in California for fashion design? It seems that a lot of design students gravitate more towards the east coast schools and I'm just curious why.
This was very helpful! I am applying to these schools, but I was wondering if you need to sew your projects to get into these schools? I know FIT requires you to make/sew your sketches but do the other schools?

I wanna go there and I dont live in the U.S. just trying to get everything done. Hope you can help.
did you sew all these dresses? Is it important to know how to sew for undergrad courses? Im a high school student and I've got a couple of designs as sketches but i struggle with sewing
Yes I sewed everything myself and yes it is important to know how to sew! You have to send in a portfolio of stuff you’ve sewed so you have to know how to
I know its a bit late but pls replyyy😕❤️ Is the process of application different if you are an international student? I live in Australia to be specific 😊
I love your videos I have a question did you do everything in high school to get you into fashion and did they show you how to use things like the sewing machine and other things . I go to high school and I have a class that taught you how to use a sewing machine but they show use how but not much I was wondering if I go to college as a fashion designer would they teach you from the basic things from a fashion designer
Hi! I'm applying for Fashion Design and I was just wondering if you feel it's necessary to have a portfolio consisting of pieces of clothing? I'm not the best at sewing so I was planning to submit more art-based pieces (drawings, paintings, etc) rather than clothing I created. Would really appreciate a response! Thanks
Natalia Trevino Amaro do you think they will allow a 17 year old to apply (FIT) because I was entered at school early so I will be graduating high school at 17
Natalia Trevino Amaro Thank you so much! Do you think only using commercial is okay? You mentioned Parsons is more 'art' what would you describe FIT and Pratt as? I'm planning on applying to those schools, SAIC and CCC this year and I'm stressing out. This was so much help!
LovelyHope i am still in the application process, but I find the best combo (for me) is modifying and mixing commercial patterns. It shows creative thinking and some technical skill without having to master a totally new skill just for your portfolio.
Looking at everyone talk About in the comments to go to the same dream school as I want to go, makes me feel threatened and makes everyone look like a enemy because they potentially take my success from going to that school.
Just try your best. There's no way you can just go to the college and be the only one there, you'll have classmates. Think of them as potential future buisness partners, not enemies.
It’s been a life-long dream of mine ever since I was 5! I just wasn’t confident about it until sophomore year in high school when I got more into sewing and whatnot!
One thing I will tell new designers, coming from me, I have been in the industry for 10 years plus without attending any of the schools listed above. @@catd4ily yeah me too kindly inform me once you get a school thankyou
Me too. Pls inform me
girl, idk where you are from but in the united states almost nothing will get you a full ride to any school.
Where did you get the fabric swatches for your drawings? Was there a specific website you went on?
Pinkpanda4 you can get it from any fabric store.
I wanna go to a fashion school but I dont know how to sew, is it possible to get in without knowing it
Yes u can they will teach u how to sew in the school so if u can sew a bit u can go in a fashion school
You can refer to NIFT college
Pragati Verma I emailed parsons and they said that I don’t need to know how to sew to get into fashion program
Flamenco dress is AWESOME!
This was extremely helpful, thank you so much for showing so much detail :)

I know I’m a bit late, but is this really it? this is all that’s required for a portfolio for an application?
I’m from Denmark, so I don’t know a lot about these schools. In Denmark, If you apply for the royal academy of design, you are given a theme (ex: change, focus or some other buzzword), and from there they want you to make a 20 page (A3) paper on your creative design process. They’re barely care if you can draw or sew. They want to see a documented creative process. That means mind maps, reference fotos, moodboards, colour stories, narrowing down ideas and so on. For this reason, a lot of good “artists” who can sew and draw are rejected by the school.
I’m not seeing any of that here. Have I missed something? or is the application process just that different

I don’t actually remember but I think BFA
So for you to have a portfolio, os it necessary to be clothes that you’ve made , or it can be just the sketches from the look?
How long do these portfolios take to create? Is there a limit to how long ago you created the designs/finished product?
For all the schools, do you have to have sewn pieces and know how to sew well? Or can you just do sketches?
You have to knew how to sew and have sewn pieces

I have a question. Did you stitch the outfits together or have someone else do it for you but with your designs?
I did it all myself, it would be cheating if someone else did it for you.
Her: I only got a 1340 it’s not like I did that well
Me with my 1040: 👁👄👁
Are they standard questions or different for each, how long they give time to make a portfolio?
Do u do portfolio for every school or can you just send the same one?
Do we have to stitch those dresses fir portfolio. What if we don't know how to stitch. Please reply l am very confused.
Yes, you have to sew every piece you put in your portfolio
did you sew all these dresses? Is it important to know how to sew for undergrad courses? Im a high school student and I've got a couple of designs as sketches but i struggle with sewing
Yes I sewed everything myself and yes it is important to know how to sew! You have to send in a portfolio of stuff you’ve sewed so you have to know how to
I know its a bit late but pls replyyy😕❤️
Is the process of application different if you are an international student? I live in Australia to be specific 😊
I think the application is the same!!! The only difference might be visa requirements?? Not really sure though!
Natalia Trevino Amaro Thank you❤️
What year did you take your SAT? When I took mine in 2013 I got a 1660 and the max was 2400.
I took it in 2017 I think! The max was 1600 and I got a 1340
So I don’t to put need heads on the sketches
this was incredibly helpful thank you so much
You are so beautiful! 😍 Thank you so much for the video!
Gosh I admire you so much
Hi natali i have one question :can i get scholarship in fashion colleges with low GPA but high SAT score; plssss answer my question
They do teach you the basics but very quickly because they expect you to know it already!
Thank you 😊
Anybody know colleges for both fashion and business ?
Thanks
Most schools require both sewing and drawings, it just depends! Read the requirements on their websites
thank you
Could you please tell your age and did you apply for all these schools after high school or went to some kind of training centre? Please replyyyy
I’m 19 but I was 18 when I applied and I applied during my senior year of high school.
Natalia Trevino Amaro do you think they will allow a 17 year old to apply (FIT) because I was entered at school early so I will be graduating high school at 17
This is very helpful for me ,am 18just finished school but I am really confused on where to start on my fashion
career ......can you please help me
It was really helpful and can u suggest me some unis that give scholarships
I am commercial too but I believe I am more advanced in designing than in sewing.
did you apply as an international student?
If I want to become a fashion stylist woul I go to a fashion university?
I never made any dress and I only have sketches and drawings. Do you think I still have a chance to pass?
You have to have sewn portfolio pieces to be able to get in
so so helpful
Did you actually sew all of those dresses ?
Hahah yes, 100%
so what if you really try and have a 1.6-2.5
thankyou so much
How to get scholarships for international students
Did u make all of the outfits?
Yes
Did you make your own patterns or did you use commercial ones?
Mostly commercial but I did make my own for some of my work!!
It shows creative thinking and some technical skill without having to master a totally new skill just for your portfolio.
what's a commercial pattern
emmi m it is a pattern produced by a major (commercial) company. So these would be Simplicity, Maccall, Vogue, Burda, etc.
Did u make all of the dresses yourself?
Yes
What does uni require??????
This is amazing! JESUS loves y’all! GOD bless y’all! John 3:16
ayy!!! i go to parsons we should collab one day:,))
Hello
I came upon your YT channel.
I have some queries regarding doing my phD from Italy.
I hope you can help me with it.
Looking at everyone talk
About in the comments to go to the same dream school as I want to go, makes me feel threatened and makes everyone look like a enemy because they potentially take my success from going to that school.
ItzDawn not our fault if we get in over you tho, it means we’re better
B r u h
Just try your best. There's no way you can just go to the college and be the only one there, you'll have classmates. Think of them as potential future buisness partners, not enemies.
When did you know you wanted to major in this?
It’s been a life-long dream of mine ever since I was 5! I just wasn’t confident about it until sophomore year in high school when I got more into sewing and whatnot!
How could you learn to sew all this before getting into fashion school?
Lots of practice!
I'm about to be a senior ('19) and no way I can fix my GPA
Go to community college, it is a great start ! You can make it look like highschool never happened.
Omg I have two years to learn how to sew😣
Leslie Fernandez same sis 😂 but my mum is a really good at sewing so I’m hoping she’ll teach me
I have 6 years 😜
Because I am only of 11 years now
Thanks a lot. For once TH-cam suggested something useful lol
Instead of booking a model can we ourself act like a model???
I modeled pretty much everything for my portfolio!
