This absolutely made my day! Please show a follow up story so we can see this back on the road! I want to see Peters reaction to his first drive in so many years
I was in the army in the mid 80s in S.A. based in Kroonstadt. We would hitch-hike back home to Cape Town when we had leave. Even sometimes just for the weekend, even though it was about 1215 km each way. One day on a Friday evening, a guy traveling from Johannesburg to Cape Town picked us up in a car just like this one. He picked us up because he was tired and needed someone to share the driving. His only stipulation to us was that we share the driving and go fast as he told us to drive to be in Cape Town for breakfast. The trip usually took around 12 hours at an average of 110 km/h with a couple of stops for fuel in those days. That trip took us around 8 hours going at about 160 km/h on average on empty roads in the middle of the night through the desert. What a thrill. Not sure we could have done it in any other car at the time.
Great episode, as a South African car fan these special BMWs are held high, we had a 333i aswell I believe built in SA. The Perana name also hugely respected. I myself lived in Secunda, the small town mentioned by the owner. Those yellow Transvaal number plates are so nostalgic.

Been an avid watcher of this show since the start and eagerly await each episode. This car has literally been under my nose for 30 plus years. I would have walked past that garage on the way to school, bought my first house in 2001 1/4 mile away and now live less than 3 miles away from the location. The whole time it’s been there and never had an inkling. I am a serial BMW owner myself since 97 and currently drive a 2020 530. Love this episode with my very bones ❤️

This took me back to my childhood. My mother was nurse at a clinic next to the BMW plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria in the late 70s and early 80s. Sometime, during school holidays, I would go to work with her. My highlight was the factory visits she used to do to treat her out patients, including at BMW. You can imagine the excitement of a 10 year boy inside the factory where they made the ultimate driving machine (even if I had to stay in the car).
I worked for BMW in South Africa, during technical training I heard of these phantom lightweight e12 s I thought they were all gone, or just a mythical M car. When I heard her fire up 😢 I remember the change to group N and the absolute great racing that followed.

Absolutely incredible. I was on the edge of my seat praying for that the start. To so many people it’s just an inanimate object but Peter’s story and passion proves otherwise. I was quite emotional by the end.
Saw this car a few days ago (thanks peter!) this guy is my neighbour, he showed me around it in his garage in Stoke on trent, what a motor and a great owner! I can't wait to hear it running sometime soon! Great episode guys big fan.
Simply amazing. I’m from the US and I love finds and revivals like this!! I’m not even going to pretend I have any idea about the vehicle, but the passion you all have for it is contagious. From the mid 70’s till probably the 90’s🤔 American power and sports cars were lacking due to gas prices and emissions standards. Since we always thought bigger was better, most didn’t understand how to use smaller to its limits. In that time many of us fell in love with cars from all over the world. Can’t wait to see more from your videos
Sound of the engine is awesome. The look on the owners face says it all! There is nothing like the sound of a vintage, naturally aspirated M engine. Thank goodness this beauty got the treatment it deserved. Hope to see more of it.
Another incredible video, thank you Jonny. It's so easy to judge an owner like this - to wonder what on earth made him let this car sit for decades. But what matters is that hopefully now he'll let this special car out to drive, like it deserves. Looking forward to a follow-up video sometime!
wow wow wow, this is truly a diamond in the rough. So great he kept it. That first car, well that first special car you wanted, the one that every single drive was a joy, few are wise enough or can afford to keep it. Everyone else just misses it and looks back longingly and with regret :) .
How could you leave a car as beautiful as that in a garage for three decades? Not that I’m comparing too much as we get the chance to see it! Great episode all round 👍
Wow guys!!!! what a treat. As a young South African I remember watching the incredible racing at Kyalami race track. The Beamers were always super awesome to watch from up on the grandstands at Wesbank Corner!!!! The M535's were incredible!!! Many years ago whilst driving in my seriously modified VW Jetta CSI I was driving along Rhodes drive in Constantia (Cape Town - South Africa) on the way to Constantia neck when a twin light grille vehicle with full brights on came up behind me! I thought it was a GTI! I tried to pul away from him as I had some serious power....well I could not drop this guy and he stuck to me like glue! As I got to the top of the hill I gave it full gas down the other side.....before I knew it this BMW M535i flew past me like he was doing 120km/h on a parking lot! WOW those beamers has some SERIOUS torque. Look after that Beamer guys, I can't wait to see it on the road and in its full splendour again. Awesome Video, thank you for an incredible trip to relive the memories from yesteryear!!
this video gives me the shivers.....the joys of barn finds are one of the best feelings a car enthusiast can experience in their lifetime...let alone 1 that is kept so well and it runs! thank you for sharing this wonderful journey
passion, enthusiasm, heritage, exclusivity and the unfathomable joy ... so much we got to see in this episode. Truly an epic barn-find for me to remember all my life. Thanks Jonny for bringing this to us 👍. Hoping to see Part-2 when this beauty Beemer is fully restored and running on road ❤️
Restored ? change all fluids in it (oil, fuel, water/cooling, brakes liquid +all filters, change the gearbox oil), ball-bearings +joints, check brakes pads + rotors, fresh tires on both sets of rims, check exhaust to not be rotten, wash-it, vacuum & clean inside-out and simply drive it just like that, patina on it is perfection, really.. if this time capsule would be mine no need for fresh paint to worry about paint scratches, chips & dents, this would be it..
Love it. The enthusiasm from you three guys was amazing in this one. And what a find. Thanks to Peter for cherishing this car, thanks to Tony for his expertise and thanks to Jonny for bringing this all together.

Just know the basics, where to put fuel oil and water in my car,but it was great to watch three men with a genuine passion, putting their heads together and not stopping until they sorted it,no matter how long it took. They let the car be the star and didn't have to do a a daft dance or play up to the camera for it to be entertaining, completely refreshing, keep up the good work, you have another subscriber now 👍.
There is so much about this car I love, from the hand-painted stripes, to the twin aerials and the period AA South African national identifier, it is a true time capsule, and nice to see something so rare that is is well preserved, as opposed to being restored
Absolutely love this episode! Beautiful car. Great to see it survive being stored for such a long time and still be in great condition. I feel grateful to the owner and Johnny for being able to watch this! ❤
I remember back in the days a school friend of mine's father had one of them. We stood all in the driveway waiting for his dad to arrive. Really was an awesome car for those days. Thank you guys for bringing back memories from the good old 80's. 😪
One of the best barn finds I’ve watched. A petrolhead and I didn’t even know they made this model! Local too in the North West, amazing work as always. 😎
I remember watching these cars at Kayalami. They were replaced by 740 also a homologation only found in SA. But they were racing against Sierra XR8 and other specials. Very nice car this, thanks for sharing.
So so wonderful, as an E9 3.0si owner, this is truly special to see. The sound of that engine purring away after so many years is just brilliant. A very special find, and a great story. Thanks
WOW!! As an ex rsa lad this made tear up. I had e12"s and e28"s ( never a m5 535 ). Was a fireman in Gauteng and had to pull out a guy from the predecessor to this - the m 530. The guy smashed unto a tree on the old Johannesburg road. Johnny, this show is the best!
Much love from not only South Africa but Roslyn where that machine was built. What a pleasure seeing this. You don't see many of these anymore. Awesomeness!
Superb episode! Thanks Jonny and crew for making these barn finds - they're something special. Peter's beaming smile was heartwarming and said it all. Well done Tony, great to see this old girl running and out in the open. Loved it!
I can’t even begin to express how much I enjoy these Barn find episodes. They are exciting beyond words for this classic car junky! Fantastic production, tremendous commentary and video work. Keep them coming….please!
What a brilliant and emotional story! I'd say it's thanks to all that stuff in the garage, like the 2 matresses is what kept the car so incrediably rust free. Soaking up all the moisture.
I am Indian. So sweet to hear the engine restart after 3 decades. It’s like reuniting with our good old childhood friend. Awesome video, hope to see the restored car.
I don't think there has been a better looking bmw than that generation of 5 series, I love these barn finds, it doesn't matter to me whether it's something incredibly rare or something that was once very common, the stories and the process of digging them out and getting them running is the best part.
Great episode, something about this one really represents how cars used to be appreciated a lot more in the past, for many they were big parts of our lives and families in an emotional way, they had their good days and their bad days the same way people do and you got from them what you put in. Modern cars are more like tools than anything else, soulless and disposable. Technology has moved on and they are better than ever at what they are designed for but somehow they have lost their 'magic' and I can't imagine we will ever get that back.
Best barn find episode yet. Owner seems top drawer, mechanic seems an absolute legend and I'd actually trust him with my car. And you, well you're smashing this youtube malarkey. Thanks for the episode
Fantastic content Jonny. Such a special car, great back story and an emotional journey for the owner. This is quality, gold dust content - way beyond terrestrial TV production. You should be proud of continuous content of this level. 5⭐️
Just hearing (and seeing) it's a ZA car gave me goosebumps. If possible, you should do a special on ZA homologation Beemers, the 333i, the 325iS (with Alpina bits to make it a 2.7 screamer and M-technic body kit), 745i (with, I think, either the M1 6 cylinder or a 3.5ltr turbo). Back in the 80s and 90s South African engineers were very creative in keeping us motorsport addicts entertained. Those cars were legends here in ZA, driven by legendary drivers, Tony Viana, Deon Joubett and co. I assume that some of those cars were imported to the UK. Coincidentally I regularly see 2 E12s in my neighbourhood, and though I'm a Mercedes driver, I still stare, they've always had a certain appeal.
❤ This has been my favourite video that The Late Brake Show has produced so far. What an incredible car and wonderful story. Would love to see it when it’s been restored.

Love this series! I spent the last 4 months bedridden with diarrhea after a recent trip to Thailand and these vids have been helping me cope with the drastic change in lifestyle. Thanks for all the hard work with these videos.
Really enjoyed this video, but the question that was never answered (I don’t think) was why did he put the car away for so long? He clearly cherishes the car so why not drive it for so long?
That is a rare piece, holly cow.. 😍🤩 badly dry out from gas, cooling fluids, fresh oil & filters but once got started she clear her throat, gosh what a beauty ! 👌
More than likely the same reason I’ve got a very clean RS sat in the garage…. Life sometimes throws us some curve balls we have to deal with and rather keep it for later on use🤷♂️
So lovely to see the mahoosive smile on the owners face once they got it running. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a couple of tears behind his glasses and he maybe felt quite choked up to get his much-loved beautiful Beemer running again.
When trying to jump start these cars, stop putting both jump leads/booster pack leads on the battery of the dead car. It's incorrect. Put the positive lead on the battery and the negative to a good engine ground AWAY from the battery and see the difference it makes. I am a former AA roadside assistance tech.
I absolutely love these videos. I have a 2012 ford focus st and videos like these make me realise how much I love my car and that I'll never get rid of it. Owned it for 4 years now and I love it more now than I ever have. I hope that one day it becomes a classic and people can enjoy it and share the same passion I have for it
I drive a Euro spec 1983 BMW e28 520i daily. It was fully restored by BMW technicians using all OEM BMW parts. It has the complete original interior in pristine condition. It was imported from Germany in 1983 and has had only 2 owners before me. I bought it from the original owner after he rebought it from the second owner and fully restored it. Runs and looks like new. It's such a joy to drive.

The passion for cars comes through so well in your content Jonny. Another great high quality episode.
And a fruity straight 6 is always a treat!
To me, no engine can beat the snarl/howl of a straight six. Nothing.
The rare gems that others have in their garages never fails to amaze me,as do the stories that go with them. Top petrol entertainment as usual 👍
Yep.. this piece is definitely a petrolicious worthy..
The sheer joy at 27 minutes says it all about the connection between people and their cars! Barnfinds keep getting better and a better Jonny 🙏🏻
wow wow wow, this is truly a diamond in the rough.
Fantastic video as always - I do love a good barn find! Very special car indeed, well "found".
Many thanks Richard.
@@TheLateBrakeShow You're welcome Jonny! I love the eclectic mix of different videos on your channel, well worth the Patreon subscription and then some. Still waiting eagerly for the Christmas event tickets 🙂 All the best to you and your family.
Had goosebumps watching this. What a car. So pleased Peter's keeping it and putting it back on the road. Can't wait for the follow up.
What an absolute gem! The condition is amazing and the fact he’s going to keep it and get it on the road and use it is even better!! Great vid Johnny!
Wow well done tony what a legend love it what legends you all are bringing a quality classic back to life well done guys
I remember back in the days a school friend of mine's father had one of them. We stood all in the driveway waiting for his dad to arrive. Really was an awesome car for those days. Thank you guys for bringing back memories from the good old 80's. 😪
Brilliant. Best one yet. Clearly a very special car for Peter.. 👍
So special he left it in a garage for 31 years and hasn't even looked at it for the last 12!
@@carlreading9916 life isn't always simple and love isn't always measurable
I'll raise you the E30 325i Sport and M3, and of course the 2002.
For me this has been the best barn find on this channel, it'll be great to be kept up-to-date regards this car, more please 👍😁
E30 fan right here! Growing up around them and wanted one as a kid. Now they are pricey for a reason they are that good!
Thank you Johnny f😎
Best barn find episode yet. Owner seems top drawer, mechanic seems an absolute legend and I'd actually trust him with my car. And you, well you're smashing this youtube malarkey. Thanks for the episode
Fantastic content Jonny. Such a special car, great back story and an emotional journey for the owner. This is quality, gold dust content - way beyond terrestrial TV production. You should be proud of continuous content of this level. 5⭐️
Spectacular video! Wonderful to hear SA special cars are still around and kept in good condition!
Regards from South Africa 🇿🇦
Would love to see it when it’s been restored.
one of the best car videos on YT!! the story, the car, the guys, just wonderful.
It's ALWAYS a bit of a wonder when a car which has lain dormant for (in this case) several decades is brought back to life. Well done on another one!
As an E28 M535i owner and enthusiast its great to see its father car and a special one at that. Absolutely love it 👍🏼 great episode as always Jonny smith 👌🏼
Looking forward to the "first drive" follow-up video
Just bought my first bmw barn find last week, 1984 e30 323i been there since 1998 😁
Love this series! I spent the last 4 months bedridden with diarrhea after a recent trip to Thailand and these vids have been helping me cope with the drastic change in lifestyle. Thanks for all the hard work with these videos.
Wtf 4 months !
Proudly south african 🇿🇦 born in Germany raised in Mzansi...
Great video as always. Do you offer the reverse service? I’ve a garage full of stuff that needs clearing out for my E34 M5 to be put inside! 😂
I’ve got to say, this is one of my favourite episodes so far.
It's well exciting watching these cars being revealed after so many years. It must be amazing to be in your shoes Jonny! So jealous! 😀🎸🤘😎
Cant Imagine 50 years from now barn finds of electric cars being nearly as spectacular as this
When trying to jump start these cars, stop putting both jump leads/booster pack leads on the battery of the dead car. It's incorrect.
Put the positive lead on the battery and the negative to a good engine ground AWAY from the battery and see the difference it makes.
I am a former AA roadside assistance tech.
fantastic find. Brilliant.
I absolutely love these videos. I have a 2012 ford focus st and videos like these make me realise how much I love my car and that I'll never get rid of it. Owned it for 4 years now and I love it more now than I ever have. I hope that one day it becomes a classic and people can enjoy it and share the same passion I have for it
Check the boot.. his wife is probably in there
I drive a Euro spec 1983 BMW e28 520i daily.
Nice One guys. I am from South Africa and I am proud to see this running. I cannot believe this car was in Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga!!!!!!
My mates Dad had a Silver grey M535i , I remember him taking us on the Witbank Highway 🤪🤩 Regards from South Africa
Wow what a video! This made me emotional at the end. What an incredible car and story. Best channel on TH-cam by far.
That was so sweet, watching this made me smile. That’s one hell of a machine right there. The ultimate driving machine
I was smileing all along, and when it rolled out it gave me goosebumps. Love the show, thank You 🥰
Absolutely fantastic..This is going down as one of my favourites👍🏻👈 thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
I live in Chorley and love the Late Brake Show-what an amazing story and an even more amazing car. I hope Peter gets it back on the road and if I see him in it. I will say hello!
What a find, and a great story! When it finally ran on 6 and reversed out, what a moment!
I love these videos even if it was just a boring old 1L fiesta or something just for the mechanical fault finding and startup section. Don't ever stop Jonny!
Thanks!
Here's a cup of tea for you Mate, you made my day!
This video was absolute, authentic joy
I've got a E12 525 auto and it fired up 3rd turn of the key with a new battery and fresh fuel after 28 years these cars are well built I never thought it would run again when I started to uncover it
That battery jumper you brought worked just fine there! It's not expected to last as a 650cca battery, it's just a little booster pack! Oh my word what a delicious find here my friend! That car is absolutely 1of7 and God knows how many are in that condition! I'm 20 minutes in, sure hope to hear her roar to life again! Wonderful work
Really enjoyed that video and Tony BMW is an inspiration with his knowledge - what a fantastic e12
