I have had my Speedmaster since 1970. It was given to me by my brother for my having served in Vietnam and survived. Was there from November 1968 to November 1969. As a geologist I mapped the geology of the II Corps Zone while stationed in NahTrang. I after the three year army service in went back to graduate school as there were few jobs during the recession of 1970. This watch helped my with my research as I had to time my experiments. After finishing my research in Geochemistry I again used the watch to time research in my next job. Then as an environment engineer I had to time the hydrological research relative to water recharge in monitoring wells. I can say that this watch was an extension of my body. It was always with me, day and night. Now 50 years later I have had it cleaned twice and replaced the stainless bracelet once because the expandable bracelet just wore out. I knew this when it fell off while in an airport. The crash to the ground did not damage the watch. On yes I did replace the crystal twice too. Cannot live with out this watch and still use the timer function when cooking of doing other activities. When teaching here inKorea I also used it to time presentations. Great watch. I think if you have one watch for life this is the one to purchase. Great watch and so always dependable as long as you wind it every day!
It cost $345 in 1970, so my brother told me. So the value has increased much. Since mine is similar to those warn on the moon, it’s value is unusually high.
I work at an Omega AD and I actually shared this video with a client so they could get a thorough understanding of the watch beyond what I was able to tell them in our 10 minute conversation. You present the information better than anyone and I appreciate your hard work!
It is what bring me back over and over here: detailed and throughout. The best review ever! Thank you. About the tachymeter: Start the chrono counting 30 pulsations. Stop the chrono and divide the tachymeter reading by two.
Dang it, another video I have to plan ahead to watch!! Luckily my yearly vacation just started so I have 2 weeks to get a free evening of watching this!! Can't wait
Normally I would agree with you that the history of a watch is not important, the Speedy is the one exception. That's because I am an old fart, and one of the formative experiences of my childhood was hanging out with my dad and watching the moon landings on TV, then going outside and looking at the moon in awe. That's why I bought a Speedy. Not for collecting, but as my daily beater, and as a connection to my past.
This is why I love this channel! ... awesome review as always Guy! Long (yet interesting ), in depth, proper detail. All meat, no potatoes. Never change man! How many times has a speedmaster been reviewed, but I loved this! I feel a speedie rebuy coming on!
Thank you for this thorough review covering lots of topics I have never seen adressed in any of the other reviews. One can see the amount of work that went into this video. I'd like to add two remarks: 1. I've owned this moonwatch model too since 2 months, and I have already once experienced the same issue with the cronograph not resetting. I'm actually quite relieved you experienced the same problem, so it seems that's a quite common issue and not a "defect", although I never heard about that issue before. 2. Automatic winding mechanisms actually do work in space. The rotor not (only) moves because of gravitation, but mainly because of inertia, so when the arm is moved in a zero gravity environment, the automatic mechanism still winds the watch.
The depth, breadth and information contained in this video sets a new benchmark to which other reviewers should aspire. A real “tour de force”, well done.
I've had my Speedmaster for 23 years now and I love it. It's the best watch in my collection. I've never had it serviced though and my omega retailer keeps telling me that I'm crazy because it will eventually break down. The main reason is the fact that i can't accept the idea of having it disassembled while it works perfectly fine.
To measure pulsations per minute on the tachymetre, count 60 of them. If it takes you a minute to count 60, the chrono hand will be pointing at 60; if it takes you 30 seconds, the hand will point to 120.
Love your review and the strap options you shared. Thanks for sharing a wrist shot despite your hesitancy. It does gives us/your viewers a great basis for estimating the watchsize, wrist presence and feel (Your vid quality is superb by the way). A true blue no-nonsense no BS review! I respect that a lot.
Can’t wait to ‘watch’ this. Guy, other than Stanley Kubrick and Paul Thomas Anderson you may be my favorite film director of all time. What an effort, TY
I can sit back, relax, grab some popcorn and enjoy one of your great in-depth reviews! Thank you Guy, nobody is as thorough as you. Keep up the great work! 👍
Great in-depth review. This is a classic example of a watch that is greater than the sum of its parts. All of the small details add up to make something that is truly great. The shape of the case is gorgeous, the dial is clean and legible, the movement is a joy to wind and use yet is also accurate and reliable. (Just for the record, I've never had that issue with reset.)
I was younger when I first saw the Moon Watch in a jewelry store window. It was a special edition, and came with a wooden collectable presentation box for $1100. Couldn't afford at the time, but some years later, at the same store, I purchased a later version Professional with the skeleton back in a plain white Omega box for $1600. This is the watch that introduced me to the higher tier watches I had never given a second thought.
That was by far the longest TH-cam video I ever watched , you made it interesting , great work . Everything was of relevance and your presentation style is also interesting . Looking forward for more such detailed reviews from you .
Thanks for the great video! Really good content as always. I had also problems with the chronograph not working properly. My research got me to some post in the german watch forum. There someone said, that the chronograph sometimes doesnt work as it should, when the watch is fully wound. I tested it (maybe one or to times) and I was able to recreate the malfunktion. Since then I just avoided to use the chrono, when I've just fully wound the watch.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews well I bought the new omega Seamaster 300 and they gave me a bunch of swag to take home also. We just walked the botanical garden here and getting some dinner and back to Orlando.
@@JustBlueFish Your welcome, btw, lets convince Adrian to get it...he wont regret, im sure. something mechanical, something automatic..we need it all;-)
Best watch reviewer on TH-cam by far. Always comprehensive and complete. If Guy doesn’t find a flaw in a watch I know that I will not. I bought the new Seamaster Diver 300 several months ago and love it. The Speedy might be the next watch for me, although I’d probably opt for the sapphire sandwich. Thanks again for all of your outstanding videos Guy!
Soooo... I watched this review several times and bought a Speedmaster Pro (sapphire), extremely legible to my aging eyes and a pleasure to wear (on a Watch Gecko NATO). Thanks Guy.

For me this is a forever watch. I have both Speedy Pro and Reduced Auto. I might eventually flip my Reduced but not the Pro. My chronograph is working fine but then again I very seldom use the chrono function. My Speedmaster has cal. 1861 and I love taking few moments in the morning to wind the watch. Yes, I also own a Seamaster Pro and the helium valve is just a gimmick but to me it immediately distinguishes Seamaster from other dive watches. I really enjoy my Omega watches.
One of the best reviews on this watch I have seen on youtube. Well done. Enjoy the watch, its very iconic. I have thought of buying it second hand without all the bells and whistles case.
I have had this watch for 2 years now and I still love it. The dial as you say is almost perfect. Quick tip for winding, use the left hand side of your index finger starting from nail end running down to the middle of your finger(if you are using your right hand) much quicker and more comfortable. Great review by the way
Great review! Just a note, it’s the vertical clutch in the Daytona that makes for a smooth start during chronograph actuation and not the column wheel.
I can't believe I watched this video to the end...I started watching thinking "I will only watch for a little bit" but I got totally sucked in. This is a very thorough and interesting video and I really liked the points you raised about the new "limited" edition release. Thank you :)
When the day comes that a sapphire crystal will look as good as this I’ll buy one. I’m just too clumsy for something that pretty. I’d scratch that beauty day one I just know it. Great in depth review. I’ve never wanted this watch as bad as I do now.
1 hr 12 mins noticed at beginning. Not watched yet. Thought you were doing the 50th Anniversary Speed Master released by Omega last Fri 17 May 2019 on the Time To Move event including Blancpain; Glashuette Original; Jaquet Droz; and Harry Winston. What happened with your 116618LN Warranty issue?
When Rolex UK serviced my GMT-Master II which I have now sold to @watchbox_ch nobody else i.e. cut throat Grey Dealers/ pawn brokers wanted it, even though it was THE top model, it was away for 3 weeks. They should do a full 3-5 year service, where it is dismantled; ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt and lubricated replacing damaged and worn parts and then regulated to +2/-2 Superlative Chronometer; or give you a replacement watch. Rolex 3-5 year service and general care advice:
Well a review which this watch truly does deserve👍🏻🙏🏻 Ok i have to split it into 2 Parts but great overview and in-depth review from an owners perspective. Treasuring mine since years, happy to hear that you share the same dislikes as I do too. Keep up the good work and cheers from Germany🙏🏻👍🏻
Absolutely the best Speedy review on the internet. Thank you Guy! Regarding the value of the Speedies, of course if one buy new from the AD he's not going to make money. But if buy used, the price of the Speedies on the pre-owned market actually has been steadily increasing and quite steeply during the recent 2 years. I think if Omega decide to replace the movement for all regular 1861 moonwatch with the new 3861, and lift the price to $6-7K in the near future, then the 1861 Speedy price will further go up. Just my 2c.
Thanks Robin and yes I totally agree, if the a new more expensive regular production Speedmaster model comes out these models will definitely go up in value.
IF CHRONO HAND LANDS A LITTLE TO RIGHT OF 12:00 START AND THEN STOP CHRONO HAND RIGHT AFTER 41SEC . THEN PRESS RESET BUTTON . IT WILL CORRECT IT. THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE IF CHRONO HAND IS A LITTLE TO THE LEFT OF 12:00. STOP CHRONO HAND AT 38 SEC. AND RESET.
My speedy had the chrono hand just to the left of center. Then I started and stopped the chrono a few times and it zeroed. I agree it should line up exactly and likewise the sub hands. Glad I got it 15 years ago!!!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this iconic timepiece. Picked up my sapphire sandwich for 20% off at the AD. It’s definitely a keeper and staying in my collection. Absolutely beautiful watch.
After having just viewed Michael Collins' Speedmaster he wore on Apollo 11 yesterday, this is very timely. The more I think about it, the Moonwatch might just be my grail...
On second thought, I may just covet at this watch from afar. I couldn't cope with the quality issues of misaligned hands, poor-fitting end links and intermittent chrono pusher malfunctions. They are inexcusable for a watch that costs this much.
I watched it all haha very in depth review . The speedy is an awesome watch and has a very unique iconic style. If you can only have 1 luxury watch do not buy a speedy imo but if you already have some great pieces get this one as a complementary piece. More of an I like watches watch ..an amazing one. For some reason the Omega case designs just sit so perfect on my wrist.
I know this is a bit out of date, but I had the same problem as you initially had with my watch not resetting after pressing the bottom button. This happened a couple times. It's been more than a few years and it hadn't happened again since.
For sport watches, hacking does make more scene, more so a chronograph. It's nice to see the chrono sec hand runs in sync with the sub sec hand for precision. Also, lateral clutch has more wear and tear, and, need to mentioned that the chrono function should not run continuously. In price comparison, the seiko 8R48 has a column wheel vertical clutch, and, the unique 3 pointed hammer and heart-shaped cam ensures the perfect synchronization of the hands flyback function at pin-point. My srq031 which cost less than 3k has Zaratsu finishing, and, it's accurate to 3 spd. The 2mm protruding glass, interestingly, makes the watch looks compact (30mm dial). The fine soft cordovan straps wears so comfortable. I like this better than my daytona. Just stunning

On second thought, I may just covet at this watch from afar. I couldn't cope with the quality issues of misaligned hands, poor-fitting end links and intermittent chrono pusher malfunctions. They are inexcusable for a watch that costs this much.
Thanks for watching Mark. Hope you enjoyed the review!
My #1 bracelet for this watch is the Uncle Seiko Beads of Rice. It is absolutely perfect .
Awesome video. Love your channel, never fazed to tell it how you see it. Take a bow.
Your bald head looks magnificent today!
Thanks!
It's dedicated to the moon
Yeah it looks amazing
I watched it all haha very in depth review . The speedy is an awesome watch and has a very unique iconic style. If you can only have 1 luxury watch do not buy a speedy imo but if you already have some great pieces get this one as a complementary piece. More of an I like watches watch ..an amazing one. For some reason the Omega case designs just sit so perfect on my wrist.
Good point, it might not be the best single or first choice.
I know this is a bit out of date, but I had the same problem as you initially had with my watch not resetting after pressing the bottom button. This happened a couple times. It's been more than a few years and it hadn't happened again since.
Hey Guy. I have a question. You must choose one. The Omega Speedmaster or the Rolex Explorer that you used to own?
There’s things I like about both, and things I don’t. In a perfect world get them both and don’t choose!
Great informative video. Just a small correction though, Russian cosmonauts use Fortis watches in space that use automatic movements.
But do they self wind? I wouldn’t think they would.
Hey. Can see that you are wearing a casio watch is that your daily watch ? Thanks 👍🏻
I wear my dw5600 a lot, so yes!
Lovet it 👍🏻
is the omega speedmaster a luxury chorno?
fulanitoflyer yes
Great video. Accurate assessment of Omega.
Can you please share the planet ocean clasp reference that fits the speedmaster bracelet? Thank you!
I cover all the necessary parts needed to do the upgrade in this video - th-cam.com/video/F_2i_N5LD2E/w-d-xo.html
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews thank you
Great video as usual, but not long enough!
I know, there were a number of things I forgot to discuss in hindsight. I could have gone another 20-30 minutes if I did it over.
Great review. Nice & thorough. Thanks.
is the large seconds hand just used for the chronograph ? or does it move continuously in accordance with the time
Beautiful watch, great review/video, fantastic channel.
Thanks EVH.
23:45 when the 30th heart bit heard whatever number is shown on the tachymeter divided by 2.
Very good review!
