      Go with Desktop and maybe Windows tablet. Those half things aren´t worth the Money. For around 1800$ for Razer Blade + Core + rather low end GPU you get a 1300$ Highend Skylake Desktop with Monitor + Tablet for 500$

    • @smirkingdevil
      @smirkingdevil 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess you didn't really need a laptop. ;-) With Windows 8.1's and 10's ability to provide remote connections, desktops are much more functional, even when travelling.

    People are acting like they know everything when they say just build a desktop instead of getting that setup.
    The reason why this setup was developed was to expand the flexibility and mobility of PCs. With a Razer laptop, the Razer Core, and possibly second monitor, keyboard, and other peripherals, you can do what desktops cannot. You can disconnect the laptop and use it for trips or for school. When you return home you can connect it to the core and play with similar performance to a desktop setup.
    This product wasn't designed to be a desktop replacement, but for convenience.

      Only problem with the Stealth is the dual core. The video shows that it can limit the GPU

    • @HotNitrogen
      @HotNitrogen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      THANK YOU! I can see what people are saying by it being cheaper but the convenience of having a laptop that can become a desktop just outweighs it for some people imo. Different needs for different people :)

      I'm due for a new laptop next year. The possibility of a laptop that can run an external GPU excites me, but the cost of the Razer Core is really the major roadblock for mobile PC gamers. If the Razer Core is $400 plus an additional ~$300 for the GPU, you can almost build an entire desktop PC for the same price. So you can have both a slim laptop for work/travel AND an entirely independent gaming PC at home for just a little more. $400 for this technology is ridiculous, and hopefully there will be competition from other companies in the near future to drive the price down.

    • @HotNitrogen
      @HotNitrogen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do agree but we have to account that razer has "razer tax" ( they just price their products ridiculously high compared to most other company's would). There are the akitio brand who've been making eGPU like products for years (people who game on Macbooks tend to buy eGPU's from these guys). There's the coolermaster one and the asus external GPU. Hopefully the amount of competition will drive the price down but I think at the least, we'll be paying around $200 for an eGPU

    Could you make a more elaborate video about the compatibility with Notebooks from other manufacturers?
    There are some rules you have to follow when trying to connect these though.
    - Update all drivers and especially the BIOS / TB3 Firmware for the Notebook
    - Properly wipe the NVidia drivers ( there are special tools for this )
    - Try the latest NVidia driver and the one from the Razer Homepage ( wipe between them )
    - Full up to date Razer Synapse ( important for the Core itself )
    - disable ( in the device manager ) the dedicated GPU if it has one.
    It would be super appreciated because you actually have all those notebooks to test it with!

    Dave Lee thank you so much for using centigrade instead of Fahrenheit!

  • @ArixCT
    @ArixCT 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For people bitching about its hefty price tag:
    Yes it is expensive, but as Dave said, Razer is the first company to truly adopt "plug and play" style for external GPU with thunderbolt 3. Even though it is the first iteration of the product, they still deliver in terms of quality and promised functions, and all are 100% solid.
    So we can't really complain. If you "invent" something first in a specific market, it is common sense to charge a little higher. It is just business strategy. At least Razer did not disappoint in this Core right?
    If you can't buy it, then don't. It is that easy.

      Florist
      Kinda. The back of the screen and keyboard area is brushed aluminum, which is awesome. The rest is plastic and feels cheap. BUT it's still pretty solid. Overall it's not bad, it just doesn't "feel" premium. Then again, it's not priced premium either.
      I love my laptop. I just nit-pick about the plastic.

      Thanks for the reply Dave! Have a bunch of people noting that TB3 is not a bottleneck, it may be 40gbps but even with nothing plugged in the Core there still is some inherit latency / overhead compared to the direct PCIe connection on the Amp.

    500W power supply? why? the new video cards are consuming LESS power... I'd buy it if it was smaller making it possible to carry around, but a think this big makes it impossible to carry.

    • @Dave2D
      @Dave2D  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      because the power supply has to power the video card and the laptop itself in some cases (like the razer blade stealth)

    • @FelipeFerraz08
      @FelipeFerraz08 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see, but I still wish they would do something more compact for those of us who want some mobility, we have notebooks after all so I guess we want that... It would be a better deal then having to buy a US$ 2,500 notebook with a 980m.

      Dude, this setup is actually the best u will get for gaming on the go as of now. Compare it to any other desktop or laptop setups out there in terms of portability and performance and you will see it doesn't get better than this, at least for the time being.

    • @FelipeFerraz08
      @FelipeFerraz08 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hazelbob Not true. I have a mini ITX computer and it's 3-4x smaller then this thing. It's got an integrated SLIM 500w power supply (Evga Hadron). I mean, if I can fit a whole computer in a case 3x smaller then that, why do they have to make such a gigantic thing just for a video card? it makes no sense to me.

    • @Dave2D

    So $500 for the core, $600 for the 1080, $2000 for a laptop that works with it. Why not just spend that money on a desktop?

    • @idefeczx
      @idefeczx 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zack Maxwell Exactly, I cant imagine its so that people with the blade stealth can game on the move bc obvs they cant. Your just spending $3k on an odd looking setup. Just buy a desktop and be done with it.

    • @jasonk7675
      @jasonk7675 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      $1000 for the laptop.
      so it's $2100 for the whole setup, it's cheaper than the 15 inch macbook pro and can game better than it.

    • @jasonk7675
      @jasonk7675 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zack Maxwell My point is even the best windows ultrabook you can find with similarly specs such as the XPS 13 costs $1,700. for around $400 extra you get the Stealth and a desktop gpu.
      it's a pretty good deal if you're the type of person who prefer to use 1 system that can do everything.

    • @jasonk7675
      @jasonk7675 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      and by everything i mean a powerful mobile ultrabook and a decent gaming rig at home. not all people need all max settings.

      With the Core, you can keep on upgrading a GPU. You can get a laptop with 1080m in it, but you are stuck with it until you buy a new laptop. Have you not been paying attention to what people have been saying for years about gaming laptops?

    THANK YOU for including the Alienware 15..... I'm sooooo glad I went for it. I was under the impression the Blade + Core would be faster because of the bigger TB3 bandwidth, but apparently not. Looks like I won't be selling my AW 15r2. I also have the 30% faster 6820HK version.... Noice.

    good stuff man. I was actually relying on you to make this follow up video to decide if I should spend my money on the razer stealth. In conclusion, I think i will buy the laptop just for its specs/price ratio. The fact that this gets 80-90% efficiency with the core is pretty good. I've been waiting for a setup like this for a while. My current laptop is almost 6 years old and I'm ready to upgrade.

    This is really useful. Thank you. I will get one of these at some point, but it seems like with the lack of maturity on the driver layer, and with Thunderbolt only currently being at the 3rd generation, it'll wait. It's a nice unit for sure, but I'm glad I didn't jump the gun and started building my dream desktop instead.

    Thanks for the review Dave.
    Just to clarify a few points you touched on:
    The core essentially fails as a thunderbolt 3 based docking station when paired with the 2016 Blade?
    -Blade has to be plugged into it's power dongle
    -Bandwidth swamp and buggy performance of peripherals plugged into the core (external drives, mouse, keyboard, etc.)
    You can(not) extend the internal and external displays?

    Great review, seems like things need to mature a bit more, I'm hoping they get GPU efficiency up to 98-100% in the near future.
    These external gpu solutions aren't for everyone, but I can certainly see a few use case scenario's. I`ll be keeping an eye on developments on this front.

    Great review! I must say I was surprised to see the Alienware Graphics amplifier is actually currently outperforming the razor core by a small margin. Once this product was announced everybody was saying the performance would be just the opposite. Either way I'm very happy to see more solutions out on the market I personally travel with my laptop a lot and like to play my games on the go so naturally a gaming laptop is a great fit I love being able to just simply plug into a desktop great graphics card when I am back at home.

    For people saying just build a PC, then by an Ultrabook. Building a good gaming rig with a good monitor would cost approx 800$. Then buying a separate Ultrabook (most cost more than the Razer core) would just make your setup even more costly. Then there is people who say use something like spashtop. That is nothing like using a graphics amplifier, spashtop is NOT for gaming it is for controlling your PC for media consumption.

    Great review and overview, Dave! Always a pleasure to come here and watch your videos.
    But I gotta disagree with you on that last note: This device should not cost more than 250 EURO anywhere; i.e. 200 dollars in USA. It's an empty PCIE-slot box with a PSU. For 500 dollars I expect the device to ship with a GPU (perhaps a 960 or something). Not to be empty.
    Otherwise I loved this review. Keep it up, man!

    Awesome and well done video! Could you do a re-review? For example the Alienware's received firmware updates for the Thunderbolt chipsets in their laptops and the MSI GS40 seems to work now too? But there are no clear sources to see if they can use it reliably by now? Would love to ditch my desktop for a Razer core+laptop setup.
