    I was raised in St Louis, where Berry lived his whole life. Saw him on a number of occasions. Back in the day, artists were always getting screwed out of money after performing at venues or paid by checks that bounced. (no electronic deposits back then.) Berry was one of the first to say he wouldn't walk on stage until he had cash in hand. He'd stand backstage till the promoter or club owner came up with cash. Good for him.

    Berry was a rock and roll legend; part of the first Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class and a hero to Keith Richards, among others. He had a reputation for being prickly, but by some accounts was quite personable. Years of getting burned by promoters and journalists left him untrusting.

    • @rebeccabailey527
      @rebeccabailey527 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's very incorrect. Electric guitars have been around since the 1930's. It was used extensively in jazz, early R&B, and blues from the 30s to now.
      4 years before chuck berry's first record, (1951) Ike turner's band recorded Rocket 88 (credited to ike's sax player jackie brentson) and it prominently featured a mildly distorted electric guitar, and was quite a hit.

    R.I.P. Chuck Berry... the first guitar hero of rock n' roll music; an icon of 50's music🤘🤘 Angus Young (AC/DC) based his stage moves on Chuck Berry's "duck walk"... AC/DC recorded a Berry cover - 'School days'... He passed away in 2017, outliving a lot of the musicians he had influenced, including The Beatles' John Lennon & George Harrison (The Beatles covered Berry's song 'Rock and roll music) ... Jimi Hendrix covered 'Johnny B. Goode'... Peter Tosh did a reggae cover of 'Johnny B. Goode'... Judas Priest also did a heavy metal cover of 'Johnny B. Goode'.
    Chuck Berry classic songs - 'Oh Carol' ... 'My ding-a-ling' ... 'Maybellene' ... 'Rock and roll music' ... 'No particular place to go' ... 'School days' ... 'Brown-eyed handsome man' 🔥🔥

    Chuck Berry influenced EVERYBODY in rock and roll, especially the British bands, like the Beatles. I think you were trying to remember the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show earlier. That was early Beatles. If you go back and listen to "Twist and Shout" and "I Saw Her Standing There" that they played on your Ed Sullivan Show reactions, you'll definitely hear the Chuck Berry influence. The Beatles, as well as Elton John, and other British artists always credit Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, and Elvis as their greatest inspirations.

    When I was a kid all the bands looked up to the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. They looked up to guys like Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Every generation influences the next. Unfortunately with stuff like sampling people stopped being creative and just used other people's music, often without asking. It's one thing to do a cover. It's another to just steal.

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uh, what? You think sampling is: a) not creative, rather than a full additional method for expressing creativity, and; b) that it was the beginning of people "stealing"? Berry himself admitted that the famous opening riff of this very song is almost directly copied from Louis Jordan's 1946 "Ain't That Just Like a Woman".
      That dumbass "kids these days" shit is eating your brain, yo. Might wanna look into it.

    Personally, for someone who's not really into 70s rock, i have a strong appreciation for the 50s and 60s.
    It's just so raw and lively. It's like punk rock to me in a sense. It was rebellious and new for its time. Love that energy!

    Berry was great, and his song ' My ding-a-ling ' is hilarious . I love young people reacting to songs I grew up with, but at the same time I'd like a little honesty. I have yet to see a single person say '' this song sucks '', to any song they react to. Not once. So unless they are previewing songs and selecting only the ones they like to react to ( which completely defeats the purpose of ' first reactions ' ) or, they're just bullshitting their audience so they don't offend anyone. Be real, no one in their right mind expects someone to like every song someone else likes, no one is going to be offended if you play a song and don't dig it. Well, at least no one rational. Just once I'd like someone to be honest and come out and say ' man, this song bites ' . I like reaction videos, and I appreciate young people listening to the oldies before auto-tune, but they aren't really ' reaction ' videos if you're previewing them or if you're trying to patronize your audience to avoid offending someone.

    Chuck Berry was rock & roll. The guitar, bass, drums, piano, the songs, guitar solos, dance moves, prison, fistfights, women, one-night stands,… He would show up alone, walk in the back door and straight to the promoter’s office, demand his money, walk onstage, plug in, start playing, and the promoter was supposed to have a local band there to back him up, with no idea what he was gonna play or in what key. When he finished, if the band was good and the equipment worked he’d throw back 10%,, get in his car, and drive away.
    You could say he also invented hip hop. “Maybellene” is close; “Too Much Monkey Business” definitely is at least pre-.

    This is one of a set he played on Belgium TV in 1965 on a comeback tour after coming out of jail. The band is a local Jazz band hence the audience were expected something else.

    This does not date to 1958 - it's a Belgian TV concert of 1965, when Chuck toured Europe and the UK.

    Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Big Mamma Thornton, among countless others, these are all artists Elvis Presley stole from, built his career off of, and he got credit for it while they tried for decades to write black people out of the story of Rock n Roll.

    2:00 The Beatles on Ed Sullivan Show. Different era, different crowd reaction. I also do wonder if they weren't really allowed to be seen dancing to a Black man singing back then. Not sure, wasn't my time.

    Chuck's mother deserve all the credit,
    The baby was already playing guitar while his mother was giving birth!

    You should listen to Sister Rosetta Tharpe- she is a big african- american gospel woman who played a nasty electric guitar and inspired Check Berry and others- so she was the grandmother of rock...

    It's nice to see a live version, but seriously this is just awful sonically speaking. Sounds like it's been recorded in a tin can. It's all high-end treble with no midrange or base. Stay safe...be well.

    Listen to the studio release, much better. Others will say Bill Haley and the Comets started it all. But, there is a woman who's name I can't remember whom I think was the true Rock and Roll pioneer. She appeared alone on stage with an electric guitar. Out standing!

    Paraphrasing this story, back in the 50's audiences were split between black kids and white kids, there would be a velvet rope splitting the crowd in half, forget the show but Chuck Berry was having none of it one night and told the kids "take that freaking rope down" and they did and the kids all danced together and the cops got pissed and heads got hit and people got arrested and the thing got shut down and Rock and Roll was truly born!

    Little Richard - Good Golly Miss Molly. He mentions rocking and rolling in the song. Rocking and rolling being what a car does when you get jiggy in it. Good golly miss molly sure likes to ball. Lol!

    Chuck was playing for a mostly white audience in this video.He probably had to come in the back door and leave as soon as his performance was done.Black performers were not given a lot of respect in those days and it took a lot of courage and perseverance to show up at jigs where you might not be welcomed.He set the bar high for anyone wanting to follow in his foot steps.
