As one of my favorite TH-camrs once put it, "An easy question to ask yourself when writing a Batman story is "Can you picture this Batman comforting a scared child?" If yes than congratulations, you've got a genuine, bona fide Batman. If not then I'm afraid you just have The Punisher in a silly hat." Batman's compassion and sympathy are absolutely critical to his character. In fact, it's that dichotomy that make him such an endearing and indelible character. The super hero that strikes fear in the hearts of even cosmic beings is also one of, if not the most, gentle and loving heroes, especially to those who need it most. I will never not shed a tear to him simply sitting with Ace at her end.
@@ashleydowney1222 Actually, I found the honoring of this the highlight of the newest one. Pattinson's Batman is desperately trying to help that little boy forced to suffer a similar trauma throughout the movie and the look they exchange at the end said so much between the two without saying a word.

I agree, this episode perfectly exemplifies why the character is so beloved. Superman could have done that scene, for example, or Flash, or Wonder Woman, or any of them. But it wouldn't have had the same impact, because that moment of tenderness and compassion is all the more profound coming from this character who's too often shown being the exact opposite of tender or compassionate. And yet, it wasn't remotely contradictory for his character. It fit perfectly. Superman's compassion comes from a kind nature, but he doesn't know what it means to endure unbearable suffering the way Batman does. Batman's compassion comes from a different place. Superman, Wonder Woman, etc, they see our humanity. But Batman shares it.
8:20 - Don't forget, that Zatanna isn't just a JLer. She is Bruce's ex-girlfriend AND oldest friend (someone who knew him for 20-30 years at this point) who remembers him before the cape and cowl. Him telling her about how he feels for Diana is HUGE.
Yup, hell, my girlfriend had only seen JL(U) growing up and was blown away when I showed her BTAS and she learned that Zatanna was Bruce's girlfriend in their teenage years. That her father taught him escape artistry and sleight of hand. She never realized how close they were and it put a new context on "This Little Piggy" because he didn't just go to a JLer for herlp. He went to his ex and oldest friend... someone with the skill to help but most importantly knew that Bruce would stop at nothing... so nothing was off the table. No drama of trying to talk him down was needed, just solutions. And you can see that part of her is envious because she still loves Bruce but wants him happy.
Glad someone else appreciates “This Little Pygg.” It was one of the Best JLU episodes. Zatanna: “No. WE’RE friends; with you and Diana, it’s different.” Strange though that Batman was adamant in not letting the other JL members know , specifically the magic users like Dr. Fate, but he still called in both the Crimson Avenger AND B’Wana Beast! 😀
Good video! Only issue is around the 9:38 mark for Star Crossed, where it's mentioned Batman locks Flash and Green Lantern in the escape pod, when it's flash and martian manhunter!
Thank you thank you THANK YOU SO MUCH for bringing up the episode "Baby Doll". The ending of that episode breaks my heart, and the tenderness that Batman shows Mary is so beautiful. It shows that Bruce hasn't totally lost his humanity.
One of the more understated examples is in 'Mean Seasons' from S4, where he discovers Calendar Girl's entire crime spree was fueled by resentment at being fired from her acting career because she (GASP) turned 30. This inspires him to make a change to his own company's policy removing the mandatory retirement age allowing a particularly skilled but aging employee to remain there for as long as he wants/is able to do the job, and the employee lets out a whoop of genuine happiness when he is informed of this change.
Ever since, I always thought Bruce and Diana would make the best couple. She's a maternal type who's bullet-proof, who'll never die on him. Exactly what Bruce needs. It's sad that he doesn't see it.
The way the episode is put together is perfect, Terry meeting Amanda, Waller actually supporting and defending Batman, the send off was on a high note. Heart of Ice is so iconic even “Cold Cold Heart” in Batman Arkham Origins is probably the most loved DLC in an already amazing series. Hell when you get down to it Batman Arkham series is just a darker more violent take on BTAS which is why it was such a hit.

Really wished they included the Harley Quinn show episode Thawing Hearts for Mr. Freeze. I know it's not Batman focused but it's heart breaking seeing that Mr. Freeze finally brings back Nora but at the cost of his own life, never being able to hold her hand again even when saving her
Thing is, that's not part of the DCAU. The DCAU is the shows connected by Bruce Timm's hand on them. Batman TAS, Superman TAS, Static Shock, Batman Beyond, Zeta Project, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.
Mr. Freeze's name was always pronounced as "freeze", even before he was a criminal. How do you screw that up? They say it several times in Heart of Ice
The television show "Gotham" used the pronunciation WhatCulture used here. He's German, and the pronunciation "frice" is closer to how it should be said than "freeze." In the end, I suppose it's a matter of opinion. I just wanted to point out that they didn't, exactly, "screw up."
