  • Texas student's refusal to say Mexican pledge. Texas - Every day students in Texas public schools pledge allegiance to the flags of the United States and Texas.
But when a teacher in a Rio Grande Valley high school assigned students to stand and pledge allegiance to the Mexican flag and sing Mexico's national anthem, one student refused.
The resulting controversy has one East Texas lawmaker wanting changes in the state's curriculum on how culture and patriotism are taught in schools.
15-year-old Brenda Brinsdon entered her sophomore year at McAllen ISD's Achieve Early College High School just wanting to do well in her classes.
But in mid-September she got an unexpected lesson on personal conviction and taking on the system.
"I feel that I did what's right," Brinsdon said. "And I know what I did what's right [...] I'm going to stand my ground."
Brinsdon said she stood her ground by staying seated when first-year Spanish 3 teacher Reyna Santos assigned her class to stand and recite Mexico's pledge of allegiance.
Students stood with right arms straight out and palms down, which is how the school district says Mexicans say their pledge.

There is a difference between learning the pledge in another language for academic reasons and being asked to stand in front of the class, having memorized a pledge of allegiance to a foreign government, and recite that pledge with my hand raised in a salute to that country's leader. This is just as bad as forcing Christian students to recite the Shahada (the Muslim's attestation of faith, and the words you say when converting) in Arabic "for cultural reasons."
There are some lines we just don't cross because they go beyond intellectual curiosity and learning into indoctrination.

You do not go into someone’s house and tell them what to do, that is just rude. People need to learn how to respect other countries and we need to respect our country better. If she would of pulled this stunt off anywhere else in the world, she would of been treated worse than just a slap on the wrist and a shame on you, I guarantee it. I get that she was trying to teach something in Spanish but come on respect the country for letting you have the position to be an educator. It is really a simple concept to grasp, respect the US. If she wanted to use the pledge of Mexico then do it as a writing assignment.

    • @Pomponiox1

"What fools these mortals be!" At the American School of Tampico, Mexico, an elite private school, I was taught the nuances of English (and later French and German) from Kinder to the 12th grade. No one recited a pledge to the gringo flag because it was explained that it was an instrument to tame the illiterate masses in the USA, especially with that ridiculous plead at the end to an invisible old man that lives in a cloud. Nor did we pledge to the Mexican flag for the simple reason that I have tried to enlighten you all pendejos: it doesn't exist. The reporter from Dallas is an illiterate peasant and the talking head, Letty Valadez, is just an illiterate chicana that aspires to be as ignorant as the rest of the gringos so she can be accepted (it's called being a coconut). We had no problem singing both anthems and I mostly read English language texts, Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce (loved the devil's dictionary), Stephen Crane, Shakespeare, Thackeray, heck I even memorized "Horace at the Bridge"! and loved to recite it ("Lars Porcena was a proud man, a proud man was he..."; we also read Sigfried Sasson and the other war poets and the fool (Rupert Brooke?) that died of dysentery and occupies a corner in a remote field that is forever England...Gore Vidal introduced me to your Burr (that pirate) and Julian (the apostate), etc., etc., all that in high school! All that while Gibbon took me to the Tarpeian rock where we stood and pointed out to me the somber espectacle of the ruins of the forum where the priests and monks buzz around like flies on the dead corpse of antiquity and I learned that Empress Theodora regretted that she only had three altars to Venus on which to pour libations (use your imagination, though she did show valour in opting for the purple as a worthy burial robe). And did you know I dreamt of the Raj, nay I thrived on it, from the bazaars of Hyderabad (a good poem) to the jungles where the tiger burned bright and of its bungalows and dusky maidens scantily clad and the east and west that never met? Or the rules of the pack? Or never more pining for the dear dead Leonore and the sad fate of its author, freezing to death in a street in a wintry Baltimore? Surely all this "Anglo Saxon culture" is way past you knowledge. Alas, the peasantry in the US is not noted for its erudition. Yes! I admit it! I got on the Universal Omnibus and recognize that it doesn't give me a right to shit on you ignorant murrican peasants, but, unfortunately, it does feel good when I do so. Unfortunately, this focus on the English language kept me from Spain's Siglo de Oro which I more and more find superior to its English counterpart. (Camoes' rhyme patterns is right up there with the Bard, Kipling, and Poe.) Likewise, I was spotty on the classics (I grew up thinking the Romans all spoke English with a British accent, LOL, like in the movies with Sir Larry Olivier). So please, before you start braying like donkeys that a teacher in Mexico that taught anything of Anglo Saxon (yes, we read Beowulf and had movies shown of Das Ring..."kill the wabbit! kill the wabbit!") culture ask around so you don't look so much like knuckle dragging illiterate trailer trash. Note that when asked about western civilization Ganchi rightly proclaimed that is was a good idea...to civilize the westerners. If the USA reclaimed some of its own culture (and that means literature, history, ethics, poetry, etc., and not NASCAR and greasy burgers and opiates) you all would not be so narrow minded and intolerant. But who can blame you for not reading if you are just living check to check working your fingers to the bone at the behest of your Wall Street masters who won't pay you a living wage or give the RIGHT to health care and other human rights like they are provided in other industrialized civilized societies.

She we have been deported? Hell no. We were Americans saying a pledge to our own nation. Of course, we did this in an American school.
The situation in the video is different. Those aren't Mexicans. If they are they have no business being in an American school unless they are exchange students. But as American with a Mexican lineage, saying the pledge to another country is wrong. I wouldn't go so far as to call it treason as that is not the intent.
But you question further down is VERY valid. Whose side would they take in the event of a war? Damned important question. Any answer other than the nation they currently call themselves citizens of IS treason. THAT is the single biggest reason I have issues with people who call themselves Mexican American, African American, etc ... You can't be both. It is ALL American ... or NOT American.

A pledge means nothing without the genuine intent behind it, people able to pay lip service to anything and not actually mean anything in saying such words
Teacher is using the pledge as language practice, but the only reason this gets any flak is because people attach such meaning to a mere statement of words, as if authority is only shown through rote recitations, rather than deeds and genuine patriotism that respects freedom as long as it doesn't infringe on people's rights

The Mexican Pledge would just be a lesson, you're making a mountain out of molehill when this isn't being done under school authority as anything more than a lesson, not suggesting any split loyalties or such
There are plenty, I'm not contesting that, but this appeared to be more about speaking capacity, not translation, though that could've been done alongside it, because learning a language is more than just reading comprehension

Rote recitation definitely can discreetly be an early part of language curriculum, especially an exercise designed to enhance cultural appreciation. It can also be a tool to reinforce articulation, when broken down or diagrammed, as a representation of proper grammar, verb conjugation etc.

Joshua thehand I took 4 years of Spanish in school and learned about every nation that shares the Spanish language and its accompanying culture, including knowing their flags, mottos, history, and even expressions of devotion & loyalty to each nation. But my Mexican born & raised teacher did not cross the line that this young teacher did. That young lady was courageous and reflected the spirit that makes this Nation great and with people clamoring to enjoy her precious fruits of liberty/human rights, the rule of law/equality, constitutional rights, economic opportunities, etc.
Having extensive background in education, I suspect that her young teacher's ill-advised class requirement --she was wisely trained to give the courageous student alternative assignments, though, & to her credit there was no report of her abusing her position of authority or retaliating againt the young lady like many power-drunk people in her position of authority often do,esp. bureaucrat types) were likely driven by one or more of the following: inexperience, a product of certain teacher training and/or college propaganda, not controlling her own personal bias or political views --> which is related to the physical location of the school, being so close to Mexico and all the emotional and cultural factors (good, bad, and in between--like most things) that come with this fact.
ONE school girl caused the school board and even state legislators of a huge and influential state (esp. when it comes to public education issues) to pay attention and to act in the public interest and according to our laws, regulations, and customs. That's how this Nation was born--a small band of like-minded individuals choosing to stand up --and how this Nation has grown and improved--one tired American (African-American in particular) housecleaner choosing to sit in the *wrong* section of the bus and groups of students choosing to sit, and prepared to be brutalized, in the *wrong* lunch counters, and the list goes on. Many acts of courage and patriotism that help make this country better and inprove our lives as Americans will never be known like these but they're necessary and very much a part of this Nation's character and her people (again, sorry to people not understanding linguistics or politically prejudiced--what an honor to be a mother or to be considered a mother/giver of life, as in alma mater).

Mark Norwood no one should feel obliged to pledge allegiance to another country in their own country. Good for her. I will stay silent during another countries national anthem at a sports events as a sign of respect to that country. I feel that is fair and the right thing to do. If you come to Australia and go to a RSL (returned servicemans leauge) club for dinner ,they will play the last post every night at 6 pm sharp as a tribute to our fallen soldiers. If you don't stay quiet and show respect most Aussies will let you know what it's about in a tactful or sometimes not so tactful manner. But at no stage should that girl be asked to swear allegiance to a foreign country in her own. That Mexican teacher should be stood down without pay

What the people on the NFL are doing is something somewhat right in the wrong place. Those players are there to play Football, not be a little bitch and be like " oh nobody is equal, I now have to disrespect the people who have fought for the country I live in. Yeah equal rights, fuck those who have died for me to have my freedom!!! :D!!" See, that's the problem with the NFL. If they want to protest if something isn't right, don't do it there. Go to Iran and see how much freedom those ppl have. Go to Afghanistan. Go to Somalia or Saudi Arabia or Uganda or South Korea or Syria. Tell all those ppl how lucky they are to live in such "free" countries. Or how about Guatemala or El Salvador or Mexico. Those countries are doing so well with their leadership. Tell me what it's like to wait in line for 3 days just to get toilet paper or eggs. Tell me what it's like to not be kidnapped or have your family slaughtered by drug cartels. We'd be speaking German or Japanese if it wasn't for the men and women of The United States Military. Well again to clarify, it's not the pledge of allegiance that she was teaching her students, it was the anthem. There's a very big difference between the two. And I don't believe just because your appose to the Mexican anthem taught in our schools, the Mexicans will feel the same way? Or any other immigrant for that matter. Yes I'm Puerto Rican and that makes me an American by law and we have a flag that stands proudly alongside the American flag, so I ask you why isn't Puerto Rico's anthem taught in our schools because we are Americans? Even though I've been treated like an immigrant my entire life. I never and will never critique anyone's right to display their pride for their country or their flags. In fact I do believe that so ce America was built by immigrants from parts of the would, and we have the largest population of immigrants, why not teach our students the anthems from the very countries their ancestor came from? I don't really understand the exaggerated hate towards immigrants of any race (African Americans included) that would cause such behavior among Americans. You do understand that everyone but me on this site is an immigrant themselves? Just look up your ancestry, your grandparents cam here for the same reasons all immigrant come to America. But I guess now in 2018 only certain people are allowed that previlege. And I suppose that we can only salute or show respects to other countries flag would be at a sporting event, like the Olympics, which is the only time we behave like human beings? SHAME ON US ALL? WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS HERE AND THIS AS I STATED PREVIOUSLY, AMERICA WAS BUILT BY HARD WORKING IMMIGRANTS! SO LET'S STOP ALL THE STUPID HATE AND START ACTING LIKE CIVILIZED HUMAN BEINGS. WE TREAT OUR PETS BETTER THAN WE TREAT THESE PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE NOTHING TO US TO DESERVE THIS INHUMANE TREATMENT! WHY DON'T WE JUST SCRAP THE STATUE OF LIBERTY NOW?

@@yvettesavo2528 Ah yes, someone who uses the classic, "We're all immigrants" argument.
There is a VERY simple reason, as to why what you're saying, is backwards, and frankly, not thoughtful at all.
When a U.S. born citizen, moves to another country, to live there, which one of these do you think he does.
Does he, learn their language, culture, and anthem, and successfully assimilate into their culture.
Or, does he, keep speaking English, not learn their culture, and force OTHERS in that country, to support HIS anthem.
Which one does he do? Well, the answer is simple.
He does the first one. Do you know why? It's because, when you move to another country, it is YOUR responsibility to assimilate.
Americans don't expect to go over to Mexico and sing the national anthem, so MEXICANS shouldn't expect it either.
      Simple enough, mi amigo?

My grandparents as with many immigrants at the turn of the century were so grateful to be in this country that they seriously wanted their children to live the dream long after they died.
In that they wanted their children to learn the language of the place they now called home.
Not that they didn't speak my grand parents language, they had to in order to help them out.
I think you can get that?
People don't think like that anymore it's more like a free meal and a free ride now just show up like a circus clown and you have open arms with no need for a skill, education level or no need to learn the standard language of the country.
No i don't go around telling people what my ancestry background is. I'm a U.S. Citizen that's all i need to know.
Besides i don't look Italian or Spanish, northern Italian and north Easter Spain.
We have fair skin and blue eyes.
I don't plan on leaving the U.S. if i was i damn sure wold start learning the countries language before i set off on such an adventure..
I don't think China has full blown parts of it's cities full of English speaking white people doing it's own thing with disregard to their host's countries requirements like they do in the U.S..
Along with a dozen interpreters so to avoid any issues in the work force or everyday life on the streets of China, like paying bills and so on.

As an American Citizen, it is illegal to pledge allegiance to another country. You can not pledge allegiance to two governments. It is pledging allegiance to Mexico. You could just have the students read it or you could go into actual Mexican culture and heritage while staying out of the political. Same with the Anthem. BTW. The Supreme Court made it illegal to force anyone to say the American Pledge of Allegiance so this had best not been forced on this class to recite the Mexican version.

    • @mikehutton7500

So why would anyone want to say the pledge to Mexico in the first place. I took Spanish, French and Russian and was never asked to recite or say or read their pledges of allegiances. BTW, don't give a care about their cultures either unless it has something to do with drinking beer.

    • @samhouston4326
      @samhouston4326 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Mike Hutton You know the reason. It is a push by the illegal Mexican community to force change on South Texas then all the Southwest to "reclaim" their territory. The Teacher had that purpose in mind when she had the students recite it as a pledge. Just look around at how bold and brash these illegals are. My kids go to an Elementary that is now 75% immigrants students with 3 separate ESL classes. One hispanic woman dropped a kid off at school that had the following message in vinyl lettering on her back window of her car, "No Papers. No Fear!". Denoting a program by illegals to boldly denounce US Sovereign Immigration Laws. In other words, act like you own the place. This insanity has to stop. If the Obama Administration refuses to enforce US LAW, that basturd has to go then we can create a Civilian posse to patrol the Border and uphold the Law. The one job that the President has is to uphold the Law. If he refuses to an the illegal invaders refuse to follow the Law, then why does the average American Citizen have to follow any Law like that of the Obamacare Law, Speed Limits, Traffic Lights, paying taxes, baking cakes for homosexual weddings, etc? They want civil disobedience, then I say let's give it to them in spades.

Parenthood means discipline. If the parents are unable to create an environment where a hardship is something that can be averted through childish crying, then that speaks towards the lack a parental guidance esp. because textbooks only define actions AGAINST other countries, cultures or nations, there are very-few IF any actual preservation attempts; like a metaphorical stick in the mud - because one student becomes a distraction; within this lie a myriad of misconceptions. The belief that a course is suddenly an attempt to cause denouncement, which is absurd, then the fact this is a segment from a news cast - that happened YEARS ago - yet you see the animosity that remains; so then i'm under the assumption you have little desire to maintain an cultural heritage because you've surrounded yourself with enough distractions that creating an image of independence would be foolish. You agree with a kid...whose experiences with life are limited to internet, talking on the phone or texting and teen magazines. That's pitiful.
