  • On this episode, Rich & I launch at Arlington boat ramp in Arlington to access Exchange Club Island (Or Snake Island) next to Downtown Jacksonville. I had plans to fish around the entire island but when I put the kayak in at the ramp, I realized I left my propel foot drive at home and my main GoPro camera. No way I was going to load back up and go get my drive & camera, that would've wasted an hour or more and I had fish to catch! Thanks for checking out the video! As you'll see, we find some decent fish!
I'd also like to say, THANK YOU!!!! to all the current and new subscribers that helped me reach almost 470 Subs!! Still working my way to 500! I totally appreciate all of the continued support!

And a little story below by Steve (Sea Snake) about why the island used to be called "Snake Island":
Legend has it that Ross Allen...( for you younger whipper snappers, he was like the crocodile hunter of his time, cept he messed around with snakes). Well, back to the legend.....seems he figured that exchange island would be the perfect breeding ground for raising wild pythons and anacondas. He figured that Jacksonville had the perfect year round climate and that island was convenient. It would also be cheaper to shoot TV shows, like Wild Kingdom there whenever they wanted to wrassle a big wild snake....which seemed like good TV back in the day !!
As a matter of fact, it wasn't even named exchange island....ol Ross basically told the city council that he'd supply the pythons and anacondas and in "exchange" , everybody could stay off of it.....which was a no brainier considering the snakes !!!
Well legend still has it, that all was going great, and once a month or so, somebody would come by and drop a few baby goats off at the island, and they'd promptly disappear within a few days. Furthermore no goats showed up at any of the local Mexican cookouts, that anybody knew of...so it was a given that the anacondas had done their job and they were being well fed. :thumbsup
Well it wasn't long before people figured out that they could drive real slow across the Mathews bridge and toss boxes of stray cats, and kittens off the bridge and they'd splash them in those interior ponds that were spoken of before.....and the snakes would do their thing and take care of the stray cats too !! Soon PETA found out about the practice and a bunch of em protested by doing a sit in where the cat toss was, supposedly to stop the travesty.....that is until Uncle "Dunk" from Oceanway decided to do something about them PETA sissies.
Now Dunk was a menacing old fella , a true throw back from a long lost "cracker cowboy" past, and as he put it....well, he was just gonna scare that PETA fella by hanging him over the rail of the Mathews bridge, but earlier in the day, he had cleaned a few wild hogs for sale to some customers, .....and as Dunk said, matter of factly, "Well , me hands were slippery ...and I dropped that PETA dude right in that kitty pond....and the biggest anaconda I had ever seen, surfaced and was fixin to eat him...that thing was 40 feet if he was a foot !!!
Well ....that PETA dude was too fast for that 40 foot snake and he practically walked on water all the way across the st johns river and crawled up on the east bank of the river....and never stopped running north, all the way across the state line and out of sight forever !!! :willynilly
Nobody knows whatever happened to those snakes.... Far as I know they are still on that island. Ol Ross Allen died sometime back in the early 80's if I remember right, near Gainesville where he lived.....
So watch where you step, if you know what's good for ya.....

Yessir! Appreciate it! I'm usually not hugged up against the shoreline like. Accidentally left my propel drive at home, otherwise I would be able to take the waves head on if I was just floating around

Geez man I think that was a G-Loomis rod he broke the tip off of... I would've been very sad. New sub here and I fish the Jacksonville areas as well (kayak/boat). Thrilled to find a channel that focuses on the Jax area... Great content!

Ross Allen had a long-running show at Silver Springs Park in Ocala (glass-bottom boats, now state-owned). I heard that Mr. Garcia, Biology teacher at Sandalwood High School, was a good friend of Ross and they went on snake hunts at the airport off Atlantic Blvd, where they placed plywood boards in the grass to attract snakes.

Great video man, my home is Jacksonville for most of 52 years. Were there any schools of mullet around you?

    • @VISUAL-LY
      @VISUAL-LY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you sir! We really didn't see schools of mullet. There were def some baitfish getting chased, but they looked really small/skinny. Maybe tiny inshore pogies or some sort of small silver fish.

Where do you put in at? I gotta give that place a go. Looks fishy for sure. I've been getting into alot of keeper mangroves this year, they are hitting every thing, even finger mullet. A friend and I are gonna checkout Durban creek or Big Davis creek Saturday. Its alitte more freshwater but pretty as heck.Tight lines buddy

Search Arlington Boat ramp on google maps. It'll pop right up. Right by the Mathews bridge on the east side of the river, off of N University blvd. Nice and clean double lane launch, you'll like it! Good luck out at Durban/Big Davis creek this weekend!

Which artificials were you throwing? I noticed the Smoke Gulp mullet, but were there others? I tried the Smoke mullets and got slammed on those in the Ft. George inlet about 3 weeks ago.

Can’t beat smoke mullet! My go-to in almost all situations. Also throw the white mullet sometimes. I tried topwater, spook jr, a few cast but no blowups.🙌
