Little neighbor girl got an Easy-bake oven for Christmas. We were both 7. We baked a little cake, basically a light bulb as oven heating element, which took a long long time. It tasted good but a hassle to wait for another one to bake. We proceeded to eat all the frosting packets straight up and had a wonderful time. LOL
Yes, growing up in the 70's, licking the beaters was even more anticipated than the cake. And, that was the cake batter with raw eggs in it. What a fabulous recipe. My grandmother was 40 when I was born so I love knowing that my great grandmother born in the late 1800's would have made this cake during that era. Perhaps with her girls helping. 💟
My parents were born 1915 and 1920 respectively. When I came along in 1950, my childhood was filled with Depression era recipes and stories. In my family, the Depression seemed to have a much more significant impact on family life than even WWII. Family always had supper at the dinner table, and you ATE what you were served. If you didn't like the menu, then you were free to skip dinner that night, but no one ever considered fixing you an alternative choice.
Hi Kevin. This is our family’s favorite chocolate cake. I make it a lot. So moist and delicious. My mom made it all the time when we were kids. Best to you. Maria.
Made the 1930’s chocolate mayonnaise cake and the icing as well- brought it down to the ladies prayer meeting and it was a huge it.thank you for sharing your recipes. March 24 2023
This cake is delicious. I have an old, battered and beaten recipe from the 70's. I did not know this recipe is from the 30's, but that makes sense. Thanks for the video. This cake brings back memories.
I made the cake today with my Sunbeam Mixmaster 12 which I just serviced. My family was disgusted when I told them there is mayo in the cake - but everyone liked it after tasting! For my taste the frosting is too sweet or too much, I will do a bit less the next time. Thank you for that marvelous recipe!
One of my all time favorite cakes. Coffee instead of the liquid takes this to a whole new level. Thank you for bringing ging sexy back! I mean the sexy cake 😉
Hi Kevin. I remember this cake! I am of Mr. Fox's era. There was an abundance of war ration recipes that my Gram made. Very nice cake. I just found a similar one that uses two cups of plain yogart, but there is butter and sugar. I tried making it with regular baking cocoa and it needed something more, so substituted half for Herseys Special Dark. I can see you using that stout wooden spoon, but I wasn't born with biceps that can compete with a Kitchen Aid! That butter cream frosting looks amazing as well. Thanks for sharing this mayo cake recipe. ~ Diane
This is my favourite go to chocolate cake recipe and I often top it with chocolate cream cheese frosting-delicious! I tried the bacon, cabbage and egg dish for an easy supper and it was well received by my hubby. Loved visit to the Mennonite store, I hope you have a large freezer😊. Thanks Kevin🙏❤️
Kevin, I wanted to let you know that I made your mayonnaise chocolate cake recipe - with its frosting - for my husband’s birthday yesterday. All your measurements and instructions were right on. It was decadent and a big hit. The frosting was very good and just the right amount to top the moist cake. Thanks you. 👍😀❤
When you put the cake on the plate and the cake jiggle-bounced, I knew it was a fine cake. My mouth is watering. The cake looks so good, and as I remember it tastes even better. I lost my recipe so was very happy to get this one. Thank you for this excellent cake recipe.
Thank you for this recipe, I'm going to try it tonight. I think the original recipe from the 30's didn't have eggs as they were very expensive during the depression.
my parents were born in "03". the mayo was to make a moist cake. we made round cakes and stacked them with icing between each layer. my guess is that we used what we had. parents were depression babies. thank you for this. raz
I love that glass mixing bowl on your kitchen Aid. I have the Kitchen Aid where the bowl goes up and down and the glass bowl for it for some reason is REALLY expensive. 😞
I was thinking that the mayo also substituted eggs but you added more eggs. There are so many kinds of mayo. I may try the olive oil and avocado oil mayo and avoid in soy oil since most of it is GMO. THANKS!
Kevin Thank You I just found your channel and you explained e:erything perfectly. Omg I actually just made mine its in the oven. On this snowy Monday.... MLK Holiday... had thiis about 25 yrs ago. Cant wait to watch more videos of what you have.. Connecticut Mary 😀
@@kevinleejacobs1364 I just frosted it ... Gonna sneak a little taste test ... Let's pause... Oh My That's Divine.... ❤️ Not like I remember since it was so long ago. But, I followed yours and the Tee Yuummie ❤️❤️💕 🥰 New Birthday Cake for Me. And Not from a Box which I do not use premade things... Bless you Heart... Thanks for Sharing ❤️
I have never had a cake like this! I have added Hellmann's Mayonnaise to mashed potatoes! And I remember a slight mayo taste but it's been quite a long time ago. Again, thanks for this cake and a side of history.❤️
Kevin,I love when you do these old recipes! Could I do this cake as cupcakes and how long would they need to bake? Also, how to freeze the cupcakes/cake? I would put the frosting in a separate container.
Hi Susan - This batter can definitely be used for delicious cupcakes. Bake at 350°F until a toothpick inserted in the center of a cupcake comes out clean -- probably 14-16 minutes, depending on your oven. When they've cooled to room temperature, freeze the cakes in air-tight containers.
kevin i love you dearly butt some times you sweat the small stuff too much--we all watch you cus we love you--so you don't have to worry about going in and out -me i would like to see more of the process as i am sure some others would agree-keep on keeping on!!! i love the sound of my mixer cus i know i am making something good and as always i wish i could camp out in your kitchen!!!!:)
This cake's high faluting cousin is chocolate sour cream cake with chocolate sour cream frosting. Another Depression era chocolate cake is the 3-holer! Really!!
I don't have one of those electric machine mixers you are using. Matter fact don't even have a mixer of any kind. You mention that you can use a spoon but I couldn't understand the type of spoon you said it was. You showed your spoon so fast that I could barely see it. Could you please let me know what type of spoon exactly that you can use or can you just use ANY spoon? I
Before I owned electric beaters of any kind, I used a stout (i.e., "sturdy") wooden spoon to make cake batters and cookie doughs. Conversely, I used a large wire whisk to beat egg whites and to make whipped cream. Remember that prior to 1930, all cookies, cakes, and other baked goods were made entirely by hand!
The crumb looks great. My questioin is, I know the mayo is like a star in there but could kefir be subbed in bringing this from the 30's into the present?
Hi Pat - Mayonnaise works here because it is made from oil and egg yolks. Since kefir contains neither oil nor egg yolks, I'm afraid that it would not contribute anything to the cake. And I'm a BIG fan of kefir!
I remember an aunt bringing this cake to a family dinner and all us kids thought she was nuts --mayonaise in a CAKE??? I think my mom made a chocolate cake with sour cream, but that was OK, I guess!

This is a wonderfully moist looking cake. Definitely will try this one, Kevin. Maybe for the holidays even!
Thank you for such a clear demo of this recipe w/ printed ingredients in both standard and metric. Have a Happy Thanksgiving 2024

A very nice chocolate cake. I had my doubts, but it was really quite moist and delicious. Will make it again!!!!!
My grandmother used to make this cake all the time. She also made one with coke-cola. Your making me miss the late 80’s and 90’s 😂
Hi Kevin. This is our family’s favorite chocolate cake. I make it a lot. So moist and delicious. My mom made it all the time when we were kids. Best to you. Maria.
That looks so good. I never knew how to make buttercream frosting. Thanks for sharing the recipes for both.
Have always heard this vintage yummy cake was an awesome moist chocolate cake. Thank you for showing us how to make it!

Hi Kevin love your channel. Your plates and China are just lovely!!!
Great cake recipe. The frosting looks so yummy! Sometimes I add a little cinnamon to taste to the chocolate frosting for another version.
Looks fabulous and delicious! Thank you Kevin always enjoy watching you 👩🍳💕
This was a favorite in my mother’s day. . Yes, EVERYTHING was “hard to come by”, as you mentioned.

This may be a '30s cake but definitely not a Depression cake.
Oh my. I just made one of these except we like a peanut butter icing on it. Yours looks wonderful as always.

My Mom used to make this recipe. LOVED IT! I never found this recipe to be so unbelievably shocking...mayonnaise is, after all - oil and eggs, right?
I have a cookbook with this recipe. Haven't made it yet.
This looks delicious
This is great, thanks
Hellmans ran ads in magazines in the 1970s. As a little kid, I thought soo gross!!
My Mother and I made this cake. It was really delicious!
If I remember correctly in the 1960's this cake was a favorite of President John F. Kennedy..... I am an "Old Guy" 🤔

Oh ya, thats a keeper..
Eaten this many times. I'd put mine in a bowl with ice cream.
Looks incredible! Any tips for baking at 6150 feet elevation where I live? Thanks for posting!
Is the cocoa powder natural or Dutch processed, or can I use either?
STRONG WORK KEVIN 😎😎😎
How come you didn't need to oil and flour the baking dish?
My Mamaw made this cake w Duke's mayonnaise!

If you think mayo cant taste good with chocolate ,just dip a chocolate cookie in mayo, it works lol ( egg, oio, and lemon)
Is it head nod worthy?!?!
No, you can't freeze the rest, I want to eat a few pieces 😁😁🤣, I'm on my way, right now.
I remember an aunt bringing this cake to a family dinner and all us kids thought she was nuts --mayonaise in a CAKE??? I think my mom made a chocolate cake with sour cream, but that was OK, I guess!
The way I understand it, cooking oil was rationed but mayonnaise was not.
👉✨️👈💨
Sounds disgusting, yet delicious at the exact same time, what the hell am I feeling right now?! 😊
