  • Soldier Summit is the fifth highest railroad mainline in the United States. This scenic stretch of track running between Provo and Price, UT has been a popular spot for railfanning for decades. Originally constructed as the Utah & Pleasant Valley Railroad, it was absorbed into the Denver & Rio Grande Western system in 1882. In 1912, the Utah Railway was incorporated to serve the coal mines in the region, and the railroad based out of Martin, UT acquired trackage rights over Soldier Summit that continue to this day.
These sequences were taken on Soldier Summit during the Summer of 1992, and show Southern Pacific and Utah Railway action following the Rio Grande absorbing and assuming the SP identity in 1988. Utah Railway coal trains are seen with helpers as they move east and west with loads and empties, and also seen are MPI leaser units working as helpers moving the tonnage. In addition to the Utah Railway action, SP freights are also seen with classic scarlet and gray, and DRGW power.
This VHS recording was made by Fred Klyver, and comes from the collection of Rob Klyver. Slides and research assistance for this presentation was provided by James Belmont.
Enjoy this look at action on Soldier Summit during the early 1990s!
