Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad: The Action Road - Vol. 1, D&RGW and Utah Railway (1985-1987)

- From Colorado's Front Range, to the peaks and mountain passes of the Rocky Mountains, the high iron of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad traversed some of the most scenic areas of the United States. In this presentation, videographer Bob Rivard takes us on a journey across D&RGW's system, between the years 1985 and 1987. We’ll cover Denver to Glenwood Springs, the western portion of Tennessee Pass, and Soldier Summit in Utah.
The Rio Grande’s iconic “tunnel motors” are seen and heard doing battle with steep grades, winding through tight canyons, and running across wide open valleys. A great supporting cast of DRGW GP40s, GP40-2s, and SD50s are also seen in action, giving the viewer a good overview of Rio Grande motive power in the 1980s. Bob also captures the Utah Railway lugging heavy coal trains over Soldier Summit, with classic F45 and SD45 locomotives in charge. Highlights include the Moffat Tunnel, Tennessee Pass Tunnel, Belden, Minturn, Glenwood Canyon, Helper, Soldier Summit, and Gilluly. This video was updated and re-edited in June of 2023 at the studios of C. Vision Productions.

What a great look back at one of my favorite railroads! I first visited the Grande in the mid 70s when I visited a buddy who was working for the BN in Denver, then about the time of this video with a fellow D&H dispatcher, the next trip was with Marshall Beecher in the mid 90s. From the canyons to the mountain grades, it was a heck of a ride!

Some fantastic footage as usual! I love watching those Rio Grande tunnel motors on the Tennessee Pass. Never gets old. I do hope they reopen this line, it’s too epic to be thrown away.

Growing up on the C&nw Rio grande was always a rare treat. I manage rail traffic for a large scrap shredding facility. I see 120 to 150 scrap gons a month. Abour 2 years ago I got areally clean gon with the mainline thru the rockies logos on both sides. Many pictures and selfies with it. ❤

Bob Rivard certainly enjoyed his travels from Minnesota to Colorado and Utah! He captured D&RGW trains on videotape, whereas Emery Gulash made 16mm films of this railroad which ran Through the Rockies---Not Around Them.

Love these older videos. Did a good job with them. I hate seeing those locomotives so filthy though. Must have had a hard life.

Having grown up in Colorado I spent many of summers chasing the Grand on both the Moffat and Tennessee pass lines, Railroading doesn't get any better then this! I scorn the UP for closing the Tennessee pass line down as it will never be active again, attempts have been made but the tree huggers block it, should have never been closed in the first place.

Anybody know why the Zephyr’s needed a DRGW lead locomotive?
The Rio Grande would add an additional locomotive to Amtrak trains that required assistance over the mountains. From what we saw, passenger trains operating with three good order Amtrak units didn’t get help. Thanks for the comment.

Tennessee Pass is indeed still intact. However, much work would need to be done before operations could resume.

We’ve lost many of our favorite railroads throughout the years. It seems that once you start getting attached to a certain railroad, it disappears.
