Southern Pacific Daylight: Los Angeles - San Francisco | Circa 1960 - 1968
The Southern Pacific Coast Daylight Trains 98 and 99 throughout the 1960s slowly lost the glamour and prestige they once maintained only a few years prior. The new interstate freeway network, and equally new commercial jet air travel put a serious dent into the revenue books for passenger trains all over the country.
The Southern Pacific by 1958 was already standardizing the paint on all of its passenger equipment to the Sunset colors of red and stainless, and into the 1960s, equipment was slowly painted from the classic red and orange, into this new standard scheme. Also in the early 60s, the railroad began phasing out its dining car service with their new automat cars, rebuilt from two tavern lounges, as well as former sleeper cars. These cars, fitted with vending machines, greatly reduced the size, and service staff needed for the run between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
All of SP's major passenger diesels are seen on the Coast Line, and includes a cab ride from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara. E9s, ALCO PAs, FP7s, and the new SDP45s are all seen working hard over Cuesta and Santa Susana Passes, and at speed through the and into the Bay Area.
The end of an era is also witnessed, as Southern Pacific's overnight Lark train 75 is viewed at Burlingame, and arriving into 3rd and Townsend in San Francisco on its final run in April of 1968.
These 8mm and Super 8mm Movies come from the cameras of 4 different railfans, and come from the collections of Angelo Figone, Dick Donat, and the Western Railway Museum.
Enjoy this trip up the coast during the last years of Southern Pacific passenger trains!
My friend Drew Jacksich granted me permission to use his slides in my videos before his passing, and I personally thank him for his support, presence as person. Thank you Drew. 9/22/1946 - 11/12/2024

The black widow paint scheme is my favorite of the Southern Pacific. I now have two HO scale Southern Pacific F-7's, one FP-7A and one F-7B, both powered. Now I need one more FP-7A to make up my ABA consist of powered units. Cheers from eastern TN
This is the locomotive that's in the introduction in The Adventures of Superman George Reeves 1950s TV show.
Where can I find the original color video footage of the trains, I NEED TO KNOW! Thanks
Thank you.
I remember Phil Gosney!
Aw, drat it all! I didn’t see San Luis Obispo! But that 1960s Super8 footage is priceless! Thanks for putting it upon TH-cam!
5:09 Reading a book.
Great Video, Love the Black Widow Paint Schemes, Especially When They Were Freshly Painted !
I am watching this on Dec 31, 2024 One Block from the Engine House in Roseville, Calif. Now Union Pacific, Nothing has changed in 60 years !! Still looks just like this ! GREAT Videos !!!

Great Video of Some Very Nice Trains! Love the Southern Pacific at Night !❤ Thanks for Sharing!😊
Looks like you were by Ivy City/ New York Ave. And the old Hecht department store wearhouse.
Fantastic video. Thanks for all the work you do to post these.
Great video. ❤
8:05 does anyone know the origin of this horn? It sounds like an air whistle trying to sound like a Wabco E-2
This is a wonderful window into the past
Very enjoyable seeing older footage of UP 844 (8444) in operation back in the 1960s-'70s, the 844 has been a popular excursion service locomotive for more than 60 years and I am glad that 844 has had a long excursion career and still exists today. I personally want to have a chance to see UP 844 for myself up close in person at some point in the future as that would be an enjoyable experience.
I love this video watched it twice already
I've had this question for many years now? Why do or did the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe engines have that flashing yellow light on top of the locomotive cab? I've always wondered why this is? Not to mention during daylight hours, you can hardly even see that flashing yellow light? Thank you to anyone who can enlighten me. BTW, I think Union Pacific also used those yellow flashing lights?
It was just an additional safety feature ATSF added on their locomotives to satisfy any potential California legislation on safety lights. SP followed ATSF practice in 1986 during the failed merger to reduce costs as the financial stability of SP declined.
It's a crying shame 4274 wasn't saved for the future.
Your narration style reminds me of Charles Smiley's. 😆 Great upload! 😊
This is not the only instance of railroads in the twilight of steam power borrowing power from other railroads due to unusual traffic demands, but this was by far the most unexpected.
I remember seeing a Day Light Train like this while I was working at Bay Meadows Horse Track (Sam Mateo, Ca.) in the late 1960's. It had a hodge podge of mismatched passenger cars. Obviously the end of an era.
I rode this train in late 50s with my grandmother and older brother. I remember it so well. Glendale to SF.
Thank you. Excellent Santa Fe.
WOW-at the 6:44 mark, two Illinois Central coaches at the end of the train!!!
Nice video! Great to see iconic scenes from the past. Say hi to Jemes B for me. Rod R
Those were the days before Amtrak. I am 73 years old. When I was young at least twice my family traveled from Los Angeles to Chicago by the Santa Fe El Capitan Hi level cars. Then from Chicago to Cleveland Ohio by a New York Central train. We also traveled back from Cleveland to Los Angeles by these trains. Not long after my family train travels the United States government formed Amtrak to take over the declining passenger service from the railroad companies.
Well done!
Well done!
Great video, well done!
That was a very long day we left the interchange about 4:30 didn't arrive and tie down in Suisun City until 7:00 the next morning
The engineer that picked her up from the interchange was also a Golden gate railroad Museum member and had run the 2472
And again her boiler time ran out 31 December 2023
Another silly comment I was there at pla when she rolled out of the yard under her own power after that rebuild
Let's also not forget for those who don't know she pulled several revenue service Caltrains like in that scene
I not only have run and worked on her I was on that move when she left for her new home
It’s pretty disappointing that Amtrak’s Spirit of California never ran long in service, I would’ve like to see this train service, especially riding aboard it. It must’ve went well running through my home city San Jose, California long before I was born. Also since you have the logo of the Western Railway Museum on one side of the whole video, I have very recently went to that railroad museum the first time back in November 9th.
Daylighter was such a classic train back in the day, something AMTRAK lacks. Love tge PAs
Nice classic footage... Grew up with both ATSF and Espee (running on trackage rights) in Beaumont, TX... Never got to ride the Sunset, unfortunately, but still nice to see the old Coast Daylight footage here (not to mention the wig wags at the grade crossing... Had a crossing in Beaumont with a pair of wig wags). Alas, the only pre-Amtrak train I got to ride (twice, in fact) was the Southern Crescent but have fond memories of the dome and real dining cars. Loved seeing the old PA's, E's and FP's, plus one of the consists that was almost entirely Daylight Orange/Red still. Thanks for sharing this.
These trains are so beautiful, could watch these videos all day. Wish I could go back in time.....
I took the Daylight with my grandmother in 1959, from downtown San Francisco to LA. It was my first train ride, but definitely not my last!
