I was confused by the several narration references to "eastbound" trains running between Stockton and Bakersfield. To the best of my knowledge, the Santa Fe line between Stockton and Bakersfield is on a more or less north-south orientation. Great rare footage. Thanks

Amtrak should add an on board dispensary on trains while in Ca. It would dramatically cut down on complaints. Hey, if the train was 4 or 5 hours late....nobody would care. Might need an extra diner tho. 😂

In 1954 I rode the overnight version of this route (Starlight?)from Glendale to San Francisco. I was used to diesels on passenger trains but noticed a rhythmic motion. When it stopped at San Luis Obispo I took a walk on the platform and to my surprise, there sat a steamer! Memorable trip!

Very nice. I remember those old SP streamlined steamers.

If time travel were possible, this journey - along with a visit to the 1964 World’s Fair - would easily be in my top ten! 👍

Hi! Off-topic question sorry, but was triggered by “West Sacramento” coupled with seemingly a thing, an itch, an affinity for, just something, I have for the Sacramento Northern Railroad. I walk trails on the former SN right of way and my question is what was the industry in the town, or township of Oxford that warranted a spur constructed 10 miles beyond Clarksburg; subsequently, when did it cease operation? No biggie, just curious if anyone knows. Cheers. PS took some pics of Lisbon? trestle remnants sticking out of the water while dog walking in the Arcade area.

I was born in 1950, and when I was a little kid my parents would go camping at the beach. I was always so tickled to see the Daylight go by. Sometimes there'd be another steam train that would go by, or just a bare locomotive and tender, but they were just brutal looking black things. The Daylight was beautiful. I was so disappointed when they switched to diesel, but that's progress.

Well let's see of the things shown in this video the only ones I have not run would be the 1005, both lrvs, the number 7, the 0109 that's about it everything else I have run within the first time I ran something was the 178 that would have been before the host of the video was born I'm sure by a long shot since that was about 1973

I think that I found another reason for higher ridership numbers for 1930. So, prohibition law was quite established. It is well known that residents from San Francisco came to Marin County to drink because it was harder to enforce this law. Just think, many of historic bars in Marin County still just very short distance the NWP tracks. Examples: 2 am Club, Silver Peso, Matteucci’s, all bars on Broadway st in Fairfax, The Paper Mill at Forrest Knolls.

Great documentary. By watching it I was able to identify parts of Marin where the NWP rails used to be. Note, in the slide where you show the 1930 x 1940 ridership, you have to take in account that the Golden Gate Bridge was open in 1937. So, traveling by bus and crossing the bridge was likely faster than train and ferry. I also think that taking a bus and crossing the bridge was the sign of modern times coming in. For good or bad.
