Dear Roja Dove, It took me 40yr to appreciate fragrance's. Cant wait to dive into your creations. Waiting on Elysium Pour Homme Parfum Cologne now. Hope we all are so fortunate to try them all! Thanks for your time sir. Atlanta GA.
Mr. Dove, I must say, Elysium Pour Homme Eau Intense…is a pure masterpiece. The scent is absolutely intoxicating and a pure pleasure to wear. This came to be my signature scent after the first wearing. I can’t thank you enough for coming up with this. Cheers!
Tried the collarbone technique and it really worked with my Hacivat! I always had trouble with its projection when I sprayed behind the ear. It worked so well under my shirt; I guess it was cos the spray points were protected and got constant heat. Lasted almost 12 hours.
I love Roger, his passion for perfumes and his personality. But not sure his point at 0:28, is valid, about rubbing the wrists together after applying the perfume "or you'll end up bruising or damaging the fragrance". We are talking about molecules which are very, very small and it's practically impossible to crush them.
Nothing to do with the content of this video... but I am a huge fan of your work! sir! Oceania, is the work of a genius of the very highest order! Thank you!
Recently discovered your channel, loving your knowledge and passion. My own fragrance collection has grown quickly these last 2 years and listening to your talks is both pleasurable and informative. Niche perfumery is a little out of my price range at the moment but I hope to sample and own some Roja creations in the future.
I always put fragrance on my wrist because I don't like when fragrance gets stuck on my shirt or jacket collar, so I have to wash it every time I want to change fragrance. I made that mistake with my expensive coat with an aggressive fragrance that still lingers now one year later. In summer it is perfect to wear it on your wrists; in winter you can roll up your sleeves just enough to expose your wrists from the shirt. It is also much easier to remove fragrance from your wrists than it is from your neck or behind your ears.
Finally got to smell your creations while in New York! Absolutely stunning. Most are in a more mature style than what I am used to, but I appreciate their complexity and thought behind each one. I'm savoring the lasting bits I have on my sample cards. Love the work! Glad to also see you on TH-cam more often now!
Thank you for these very useful tips Roja. One question that bothers me, how does applying fragrance before lotion not bruise the fragrance, like when you told us to avoid rubbing it in?
I’m so happy to see you on TH-cam. You did some videos for a magazine years ago on perfume and I was obsessed with watching them as you speak so hypnotically on the subject of perfume. You’re the David Attenborough of the perfume world.
I really hate that I’m just now getting into fragrances and just learned about this man and his perfumes. Thank you so much for the content. I hope you bring back the Oligarch scent. I would love to smell it. I keep hearing great things about it
Dear Roja Dove: thank you for these wonderful tips! I’m a great fan of yours from Puerto Rico. Very interesting thoughts on the body lotion usage! However, if you shouldn’t rub a fragrance in order to avoid overheating the oils, then how should we apply the moisturizer or lotion after having put on the fragrance? I’d like to try this tip, but don’t want to ruin my fragrance. Please let me know how you do it. Abrazos!
Good point - I can see how it seems I have delivered a mixed message, here. When some people apply perfume, they spray the scent very close to their wrists and then immediately press their wrists together. This almost compresses the perfume... it crushes the notes that you have just applied to your skin. The perfume becomes a bit of a cacophony. Instead, you should spray perfume onto your skin from a bit further away, which allows the notes to settle on and then dissipate from the skin, as nature intended. Allow the scent to settle for a few minutes and then apply cream to lock the notes - which have settled naturally- onto the skin. The slight heat from the rubbing sensation will enhance the notes but it won't crush them in the way they get when directly applied and dabbed. Rx

My background is pharmacy, and while I know little of fragrances, what I know of chemistry makes your last point seem dubious at best. Liquids do not stack in layers (not on the skin, anyway). They mix. My chemistry background would suggest whether the lotion or perfume is applied first makes no difference because they mix either way. In your scenario, the alcohol just attacks the lotion from underneath instead of from on top. How am I wrong?
Some great tips from the Master Perfumer. One thing I used to do was apply a spray onto the neck area behind the Ear lobe as I was told it was a pulse point that radiates the scent. I will apply to the wrist a lot closer now

The problem with applying lotion on top of the fragrance is that the skin is semi-permeable and the point of lotion is to provide a barrier function (like mucus does for our mucosa). Fragrances contain various amounts of endocrine disrupting compounds. Applying fragrance atop lotion will lower the amount of endocrine disrupting compounds that are absorbed through the skin. Applying the fragrance directly to your skin and then applying lotion/barrier cream will not necessarily lock in the scent and lower the rate of vaporization. The fragrance is just as likely to be absorbed by the skin.
