    This video saved my life or at least saved my 1960 KG, was on a road trip when I stop to get some gas. Pulled my EB and the button assembly flew out the other end. Didn't know what to do other than to put my car in gear to keep it from rolling. Did a quick search on TH-cam while putting in some gas, found this video and 30 mins later I was back on the road with a working EB.... THANK YOU!!!!

    Just purchased a 66 vw bug. It's been over 30 years since my last one, so i'm trying to dig deep in my memory banks in doing simple basic repairs. This video was fantastic in getting my emergency brake back to normal. Thanks and I'm sure i'll be watching many more of your videos!

    Hats off to you sir for making this straight forward video. I was able to fix the same problem with your instructions. Tip for those with the same issue, towards the end of the video makes more sense but consider watching the beginning also for basic understanding. Thanks again sir.

    Thanks. I took my dad's 67 Bug in to get the alarm fixed and they yanked the handbrake up too far. They also parked it on the street and got a parking ticket. They took care of the ticket but owner didn't call back about fixing the brake. I searched ur video and couldn't wait to get home to try fixing it. It took me 5 minutes to fix it, (it took me 30 minutes to set-up my tools, lol!). Excellent video and instructions! Thanks again!

    I was able to fix my handbrake before by wiggling it around tons until it eventually worked right. Your video turned an hours frustation bodging into a 3 minute fix. Bravo, sir!

      +vw64manyrd Soooo... I thought you'd be amused by an update to this story. The handbrake cables were totally shot on my Bug, which is why my handbrake kept going off the end of the ratchet. So I replaced them along with new shoes etc. I was rebuilding the handbrake mechanism and I did exactly what you say not to do.... and end up dropping the ratchet plate deep into the central chassis tube.
      So... now everything's on hold until the postman arrives with a telescopic magnet and one of those springy grabbers from eBay. D'oh, I'm such a doofus!

    You have a way of explaining things that's wildly helpful to me. I was able to repair my brake in about 5 minutes after watching this, and, believe me, I'm no mechanic. Thank you for this.

    Wow! I watched this video and was able to fix my parking brake handle in about 2 minutes of trial and error! I noticed after being perpendicular with the bottom loop, my button started to go sideways (the more I pressed it in), just like you had mentioned. I went just a little bit slower, and sort of 'worked' the button to stay in alignment while the bottom loop and claw switched positions. Got the claw back on, pulled brake up too high AGAIN, and realized that was my issue. Now I know to only pull the brake up exactly 10-clicks.
    THANK YOU for your wisdom and kindness!

    • @vw64manyrd
      @vw64manyrd  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zach Allenton glad this video helped! you might need to adjust the rear brakes if the handle pulls up too far. I adjust my parking brakes when new shoes and adjusted correctly. when the parking brake begins to come up too high it is time to adjust the rear brakes. Thanks for watching and the positive comment!

    Your video was helpful for me. Wife told me (she just bought a 73 beetle) that the e-brake handle was pulling up too far and not holding the brakes. I found the button was not connected. Was able to re-connect it and got it working again after adjusting the brakes. Thanks!

    Absolutely excellent video. I self induced this problem and you showed me how to fix it. I used a little screw driver instead of a bent clothes hanger. I did have to loosen the emergency brake cables and remove their metal piece from the little knob before I could get the detent to rotate. But it worked perfectly just like you demonstrated so well both off and and on the car.
    Once again I'm impressed by the simple genius of these old bugs. Mine is a 73 beetle that is roached and I'm reviving. Too rusty to make worth restoring but I'm having fun tinkering on it.

    Thanks a lot!!! the second version you showed, at around 12:16, was helpful on my 1982 Porsche 924. For anybody else doing this on a 924. The job is a lot easier if you take off the whole handle assembly from the car (two bolts), and mount the "tikker" that way.

      @@vw64manyrd Should be saying thank you to you for explaining it so nicely.
      I have a question for you, maybe you'll know. My handle looks EXACTLY like that but my button does not shoot out by itself.
      It still has the spring behind the button on that metal thing with the loop that has to show towards the top. Is that the only spring that's supposed to be in there?
      From what I can see on mine and in your video, it looks like that is the only spring so I suppose mine is maybe just kaput and needs to be replaced with a new spring strong enough to push the button back out or how else does the button shoot back out?

      @@wynandwarren1580 if the lever ratchets and stays in the locked position when setting the brake it should be fine. Good luck with it.

    Very informative, but what recommendations do you have for a parking brake handle where that button is stuck at the in position and not allowing that little notched end to contact the read and hold in place?

    • @vw64manyrd
      @vw64manyrd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anthony W I have not run into that problem before but I will look at one and see if I might be able simulate the problem and figure a fix. My suggestion would be to take it apart and reinstall correctly. If you do be careful not to drop any parts into the floor tunnel or some fishing with a magnet on a stick will be needed. Thanks for watching!

    • @presidenttomato816
      @presidenttomato816 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      was taking stuff apart and and found that since I have a bend in the handle the rod that moves back and forth to hold and release the handle is binding on the said bend in the handle. I am currently trying to find a way to unstick it but no luck so far.

    Do you know if I could replace the muffler on my Toro lawn mower (3-4 horsepower) with a Type 1 chrome tailpipe, shooting straight up? Or would it be too loud? I always thought it would look cool. If anyone would have done it (or have an opinion) I thought it might be you. Thanks!
