Honestly I can see why they changed it for the movie, at least back then. They probably thought that having Hogarth trap the giant made him seem too cruel or make his intentions unclear, while saving him (especially combined with him trying to bring home a pet at the start) really shows off what a kind kid he’s supposed to be in the movie. Granted these days I’d give kids some more credit and it could still be fine the other way if done right, but there’s plenty of movies where the writers or someone in charge didn’t want an even slightly morally grey protagonist

It's a beautifully animated film from 1999 directed by Brad Bird who also directed the Incredibles and Ratatouille. Only the Iron Giant was put out by Warner Brothers animation instead of Disney. So they probably weren't afforded as much publicity as a Disney film. It's a very wonderfully told story. Set in the '50s during the Cold war when the west was worried about the atom bomb and the Russians having technologies that Americans could only dream of. A 50 ft metal giant falls to Earth. It's never actually told who created the giant. But you are supposed to piece it together on your own that he does in fact come from space. A sentient non-biological man. He possesses powers to destroy. But he also has a child-like curiosity. The story really could go one of two ways. And the fact that Hogarth found him and befriended him probably saved the world.
