Rogard is ready to stand down when Kent panics and orders the missile launch. Rogard furiously reminds Kent that the missile is locked onto the Giant's current position and they will all be killed in the blast radius. Kent tries to escape but the Giant stops him, and Rogard's men secure him. Hogarth explains to the Giant what will happen when the missile strikes. The Giant says farewell to Hogarth and flies off to intercept the missile, remembering Hogarth's words about being who ones chose to be, and the Giant says, "Superman" just before collision. The missile explodes harmlessly in the atmosphere. As the townspeople and military are relieved to be alive, Hogarth is saddened by the robot's apparent destruction.

I know everyone's said it, but the General was honestly an incredibly handled character. He reacted rationally and believably, and as soon as there was even a doubt of the Giant's threat he reconsidered and ordered his troops down rather than risk further escalation and loss of life. He even salutes the Giant.
But another great line is when he tells Mansley that they're all going to die "for our country." He knows full well the waste of life that comes with such mentality and is throwing it back at Mansley who used it as justification for all his terrible actions. This is such a refreshing take on a military Commander archetype and so much more true to life.

Yep, in most stories with this type of situation they usually make the military general character as some irrational trigger happy asshole who wants to kill anything that isn’t from America let alone earth. All because entertainment companies seem to love pushing the idea that patriotic men are all somehow xenophobic trigger happy nut jobs.

I love how Mansley and Rogard show the two kinds of men in war. One paranoid and wanting to eliminate all threats before they're even a threat just to save their own skin, the other logical, reasonable, and although willing to do whatever to stop a threat, will take any action to prevent a conflict from opening up unnecessarily where good men will die at another's orders.
Summed up the paranoia of the Cold War era nicely - itchy trigger fingers on the gun vs people who used reason before ever considering the gun.

    • @teamvlcn6820

Given Rogard's age, he likely fought in WWII, which is still considered the worst war in recorded history. So he knows how pointless and evil violence can be.
      Edit;
I did the math, and if we assume that Rogard is 60 years old and this film took place in 1957, then Rogard would have been 17 when WWI first broke out. So, he has first-hand experience with war, either through his father or himself.

@Richie Duff There's a reason why: While capable of incredible destructive powers and equipped with highly advanced and destructive weaponry, the Iron Giant would not ever want to harm anyone or any living thing. When he first came to earth, the Iron Giant had a bump on his head that was holding back info from his suit's defense systems. The Iron Giant would only allow his suit to activate its defense weapons in self defense but it is hard to control his suit's defensive programming. The Iron Giant may be very big and tall, and might also contain weapons more deadly than anything Earth has ever seen... but he does enjoy playing with Hogarth, pretending to be Superman with him and help make amazing, beautiful-looking sculptures and art with Dean. While normally peaceful after Hogarth saves his life, the Iron Giant's suit reacts defensively if it recognizes anything as a weapon, immediately attempting to destroy it in protection of the Iron Giant, but at first "Giant" (also known as The Iron Giant) couldn't stop his suit until later when he had learned how to control it. The Iron Giant's eyes have a bit of personality; his eyes color would change to different colors for different reasons: At night, his eyes are normally blue for a possible alien type of night vision; in the day, they turn yellow or white for a more normal type of vision to see regularly with the current light at hand. His eyes also turn red when his metal suit gets triggered into a defense mode by the spotting of a weapon and when he is being attacked as well.

@@Jerraro I wouldn't say the general in 'Monsters vs. Aliens' is rational so much as a lunatic who happens to do the right thing. Though I still like him regardless.
For example; he forcibly holds monsters, two of whom are human in origin, in a secret location without any communication with living kin (not even long-range communication that's closely monitored by security staff) in a potential violation of their human rights. And it seems like the general and the government have no real reason to go to such extreme measures to keep the monsters secret from the world but does it just-because, considering how he was fine with just granting them their freedom in exchange for fighting off the alien robot. And even if it's ultimately the right thing and is a better alternative to nukes, using monsters to fight an alien invasion is something you'd have to be just a little bit insane on a certain level that's not rationally encouraged in top-brass government and military officials to seriously suggest as your first point of call in a war room meeting - especially since the monsters in question are rag-tag misfits, who don't have much reason to be on the US government's side after being locked up against their will and denied certain rights (it's lucky that Susan, Dr. Cockroach and the others are overall decent people who stay on humanity's side regardless).

The General is such a well rounded and thoughtful character and is depicted as what high ranking officials in most militaries should be, a pillar and resounding leader fit for his position, and the General here shows all the traits needed and should be expected of him, from the very obvious use of his calm demeanor to make level headed decisions before jumping to conclusions (until mansley forces things over the edge) to utilizing every reason to not further aggravate the situation and risk more lives needlessly, it's honestly refreshing and I wish more military personnel were portrayed this way in movies

Probably seen this movie 15 times.
Years ago, The Iron Giant was recommended to us by one of my wife's pre-school students.
What really sealed the deal was the student's mom saying that she cried at the end.
"CRIED? At the end of a kid's movie?" we thought. "Gotta see what THAT'S about!"
What we discovered was one of the two greatest parables on self-actualization that I know of in modern popular culture (the other one is the sci-fi film 'Gattica').
It has great voice acting, a great script, and is just plain FULL of heart. It's just a beautiful story. (Why don't they make movies like this anymore?)
I'd gladly recommend this movie to anyone.
    Also....
I'm a 62 year old man, and I can tell you----near the end, when the Giant closes his eyes, says "Superman" and sacrifices himself for his friends, I bawl like a newborn infant.

It's much safer to shit out a crappy sequel than to risk original ideas. All of the fans will think they're there for more of the same greatness that made them enjoy the movie before, but the new corporation is milking a cash cow they recently bought until the udders are mangled and gangrenous. With new ideas, you have no idea what the response is going to be. There's too many unpredictable factors, enough that CEOs believe that the overwhelming increase of profits isn't worth it. For fucks sake, Disney actually tried to sabotage Treasure Planet at every stage. If they had given the movie room to shine, they would have earned enough money to repair the inn a hundred times over

I remember General Rogard in this film very fondly especially as I got older, partly because of how reasonable and rational he overall is. There's Rogard ordering his men to stand down the moment he realises Mansley has been lying to him and just how out of his mind Mansley is with him putting Hogarth in danger and wanting the missile launched at Rockwell, and the Giant being pretty much unstoppable but benign if left alone. The admiral from 'Godzilla' (2014) and 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' (2019) should be taking notes.

The General is easily one of the most well-developed military archetypes ever. Initially he orders every unit to fire at the Giant when he goes berserk, but after seeing that the robot truly means no harm and that they’re only provoking him, he orders everyone to stand down and even calls Mansley out on his wrongdoings. My Dad and I were talking during Thanksgiving just the other day, out on the balcony. I'm just this side of 30 now, Dad grew up during the height of the Cold War, and we were discussing how my generation didn't have to grow under that fear. We didn't do nuclear drills in school like he did...
      "It wouldn't matter."
Dad was of the opinion, if he was close enough to see the flash, it didn't matter what building he was in, or what desk he was under, or what bunker he was running for - it wouldn't matter.

I don't think a movie will ever give me the same level of chills as this one does. When the missile cuts it's engines, starts to fall, and the music swells it's dreadful inevitability becoming reality to be met with ".......Superman".
This movie is a masterpiece on so many levels.

Giant: You stay, I go. No following.
    Hogarth: I love you.
(The most emotional part of the film before the giant sacrificed himself to save everyone)

  • @WillieManga
    @WillieManga 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

This scene is a testament to how well directed this movie is. Hogarth may be brave, but his tone and facial expression still show a bit of fear, like he doesn't fully know this will work. Just like the giant's expressions have a lot of guilt while looking at Hogarth, and anger when looking at Kent. And oh boy, Kent. At the end of the day, it wasn't about protecting the people, it was about proving he was right, which is why he desperately tried to have the giant destroyed but when he made his mistake, he tried to run from responsibility. He's gonna be court marshaled hard for that. Glad Rogard didn't take the Giant causing the car to crash as a sign of aggression and instead had Kent arrested. And their dialogue is great too, as you can feel the conflict of ideals between them. When Rogard asked what the hell was wrong with Kent after realizing his lie, it really showed how he would be insane to listen to him. As dramatic as the sitiation was, I laughed a little at this:
"That missile is targeted to the GIANT'S CURRENT POSITION! Where's the GIANT, Mansley!?"
"Wh... ohh... we can duck and cover! There's a fallout shelter right-"
"There's no way to survive THIS, you idiot!"
That callback was really good. Kent was too trusting of that ridiculous cartoon, and fallout shelters are not able to withstand a direct impact from that kind of bomb. Great work, Brad Bird.

When people talk about "Doublethink", this is a hysterical version of it. To understand the true meaning and downright awfulness of it, now imagine Mansley claiming it without emotion, but still rationally understanding it to be a false statement. Personally I think that second, horrible meaning is found in psycho/sociopaths, but there are lots of cases in history where people in Mansley's position are not confronted and removed, who teach others their beliefs while knowing it's false and evil, all to maintain their grip on power. Imagine Mansley having a radio show like Alex Jones. In fact...

@@EarlofSedgewick Already met a fool like that in Team Fortress 2, even though it's "technically" a "minor" thing. In short: he manipulated people to kick innocent players from the game. Oh sure, "it's just a game." I don't want to make it any more or less than it is, but it *does* count as an example.
He *casually* said, as though he was bored while ordering something he doesn't care much about and was paying more attention to something else, "Hey, so and so is a cheater, they're using aim-bot. Kick them, I'd appreciate it." ... He kicked *5 innocent people* before someone asked, and then he said (while still in the "bored" tone of voice) that he kicks people for fun - or at least, that was his word on it.
I *did* report him for false kicking, but a lot of people don't really have faith in the game's reporting system. Then again, the bot crisis in the game was reduced significantly, last I checked. I'm not sure how much good the reporting system will do. I guess if he gets enough reports against him, he'll get his account suspended.
