Exactly. The little noises such as the meow and ringing sounds perfect. You are learning whilst being relaxed. I learned more than what I would in a classroom.
The thing about REM sleep being most prominent in the mornings makes a ton of sense, whenever I’m sleeping in on a weekend and I wake up but then go back to sleep, I get really weird dreams that I can wake up from at any time but I’m not necessarily controlling them, I just kinda know I’m dreaming

When I was in elementary school I would be tired during the day because of an abusive household, and high school I had a lot of sleep deprivation because of my depression, and I would just crash during the day at school sometimes. Working as a teacher now, I try my best to be as understanding as possible with my elementary students, because you can't learn if you are deprived of sleep. Even if it means missing one lesson, it makes them much more productive throughout the rest of the day. Sometimes I even talk with the student that is having the problem and decide that if they need a break to just let me know.
My father taught high school math for a few years. He had one student who frequently fell asleep in class. Turns out his father had died a few years prior and he had a night job stocking grocery store shelves just so his mom and his siblings had enough money to put food on the table. That student changed his perspective on sleep, and he never woke a sleeping student again. His telling of that story made me a more empathetic person when it comes to viewing sleep as a biological need and not a character flaw.

The best nap is the 7 minutes of sleep you get when you sleep in class but suddenly your name gets called so you have to wake up. I literally don’t feel tired after and literally get a burst of energy.
In my country, there’s always 2 hours lunch break. So everyone could take a nap for 1.5 hour and have lunch. That’s beneficial for afternoon working time 😀

Rules of thumb I follow (that are basically the simplified points of this video): - 5 to 30 minute nap (MAX) for a power nap to get the blood flowing - 90 minute nap if I have enough time and/or really need a bigger boost - 60 minute naps are a NO GO. They will only mess you up and that’s where the “dead” feeling comes from. Take naps in 30/90 min increments: 30, or 90, or 3 hours (two 90 minute cycles). - DO NOT NAP AFTER 4 PM. Try to hold out till at least 7 before falling asleep for the night. Otherwise your sleep schedule will be messed up due to Circadian Rhythms, and as the video mentioned, less deep sleep/harder time falling asleep. Your body needs that ‘tired’ and a schedule to know when to release melatonin. It’s hard but you’ll thank yourself later because you’ll both get to crash as soon as your head hits the pillow, and it’s easier to have a schedule if you stick to it in the beginning. Sleep health is so important and I strongly encourage anyone who lends a ear to make better sleep choices. Poor health is so normalized these days and it’s amazing to see what simple choices can lead to improved physical and mental health.
Interesting observations. My wife prefers 1 hour naps while my sweet spot is 1½. 2 hours and I cannot wake up but feel like a zombie for the next two hours. We often nap together around 5 pm and have no problems falling asleep at night again.
I wish I could use this method. I can't possibly fall asleep that quickly unless I'm completely exhausted, and I have absolutely no idea how long it would take me to fall asleep otherwise.
The best nap is when you get up in the morning and then a few hours later you feel sleepy even while it is still morning and you crawl back into your still warm bed. You feel aware of your surroundings but in such a cozy warm comforting drowsy way. You tend to drool 🤤 in a warm slow way and you feel peace. Then your mom comes in and wakes you up saying “I thought you went to your room to make your bed not SLEEP IN IT!” Lol 😂
My sister just did this. She woke up at 7pm and thought it was the next day! She was mad at me for not waking her up for work (works from home) she signed in at 8pm and was confused
Best naps of my life were during Chemistry classes. My teacher would literally see me take 5 to 10 minutes naps during his classes but he said nothing for years. I'd always get medium to very good/great scores for his tests so it was like we had a secret deal lol You let me take a nap, I'll get my way to college, dw.
My tuition teacher would ask me to pull my ears downwards whenever I felt sleepy. When that wouldn’t work, she allowed me to nap for 5 minutes, and then use the washroom to freshen up.
I too had a classmate who take naps during classes of business studies. The teacher like in your classes didn't wake him up and he got an A+ in business studies when results announced.
One of my subject at uni was for 3 consecutive hours and in the morning 7-10 am I slept almost half of it and the teacher also didnt say anything, he sometimes even walked between the seats and still didnt care to wake us up
One thing has been certain throughout childhood and adulthood - the most comfortable sleep positions are often found in the minutes before your really need to get out of bed.
Take 30 mins nap for learning Take 30-60 mins nap - for remembering, but will take time to recover from sleep Take 60-90 mins nap - for full cycle, helps brain activity and helps connecting the dots
When I take 10 min naps exactly , I get dreams and deep sleep like it’s been hours like I’m in another dimension but soon reality hits I even got a dream when I was done writing my exam cuz the teacher tells you to put your head down if you’re done
The equal split between nappers and nonnappers is really interesting. I wonder if the split developed as a response to maintain awareness as a group throughout the day. The nappers would nap throughout the day and be able to take night shifts more easily and the nonnappers would take day shifts. It would be interesting to see if there are any correlations between nappers and adhd
I heard something similar about early risers versus night owls, that the night owls would be the ones to stand guard at, well, night lol. ...must be why my imagination is so active at night, thinking of all those potential dangers my ancestors faced 😂
I usually don’t take naps but sometimes I feel so bad I just have to. And when I wake up I feel worse 🙃 But, the best “nap” I do take is in a bus on my way home, 20min of “closed eyes”, I don’t fall asleep but I do relax and distance myself from the world. I wake up, walk home from station and feel great.
Wake up 5am, do chores, work, exercise, shower, breakfast. At 12pm, take a nap until 12:45, more work, errands, lunch with friends, leisure time, wind down for the night, dinner, bed by 9pm. Sounds like the best day anyone could have
@@hasanaboulhasan try sleep at 9:30pm or wake up at 5:30am, that way you've slept for 7hr30min or 5 full sleep-cycles. The length of a sleep cycle is different for each person so test it out.
I have a chronic condition that changes the way my body processes autonomic functions, including sleep. I'd love to see a video comparing typical sleep patterns to those found in patients with sleep and sleep related disorders
I'll explain that even if you might not need to hear it :>> on the sleep cycle maybe you woke up during deep sleep. You're body is so relaxed that it shouldn't be bothered. If you still wake up angry after a nap and not while deep sleep, idk anymore lol I'm not an expert
Some information that I can take in through this video (just positive, I'm not definately sure recording them) 1. One sleep circle is made up of four stages: stage 1, 2, 3, and REM stage. 2. A sleep often includes many sleep circles. 3. Stage Three is the deep sleep stage, and we tend to get difficult to wake up in this stage. 4. In REM stages, your brain is as active as it is when you're awake. 5. Nappers consistently get cognitive benefits from napping, because they may be easy to move on between stages; but non-nappers may not, in view of their difficulties to transform between stages and be likely to get the deep sleeps.
For me naps are entirely different. I go straight to stage 4 and I'm in a half wake half dream state. So I know that I'm napping but I'm also partially dreaming at the same time. I feel the progression of time normally and can decide when to "wake up" again.
I was in basic training for the Army a few years back, and I remember sitting on the floor listening to the Drill Sergeant's lecture. I was really tired, and struggling to stay awake fearing the repercussions of falling asleep . All of a sudden I felt great. I was able to focus, and listen intently using my newly gained burst of energy. Then BAM! I snapped awake. The sound of the drill sergeant yelling at me as my alarm clock. To my utter horror I realized that I was dreaming. Simply dreaming that I was listing to the drill sergeant's lecture with such wonderful attentiveness. Anyone who has ever been in the service can use their imagination on what happened next lol.

The best nap of my life experience: It was my first year at the University. It was heavy winter outside with snow everywhere. There I was studying in a study place on almost top floor of a university building. The place was super cozy. It looked like some renesanse erra library and it had big window walls on 1 side. Everything was in wood. That day it was around pm and it started tocget darker. Snow was falling outside. I was there since 11am studying sitted on a desk facing the curved glass wall and each time i looked up the view was mesmerising. It was like a fairy tale. And inside it was very warm. There were only a few more people that day there. At one point i just put my hands on the desk and then put my head down on my hands and iwas gonne... The 10minutes before i fall asleep were the most pleasure you fan imagine. After i wake up i felt like reborn. As if i slept 100 years
@@zerinaimsirovic5419 This is my problem with scheduling alarm times for naps and at night. 20min nap? Okay, I'll set it for 20min from now. But if it takes me 8min to fall asleep, it's no longer a 20min nap.
TED-ed has taught me so many things over the years. I would like to express my gratitude for this channel and all that have contributed to it. Have a nice day to all! :D
Its just either you take 30mins or 90mins. Waking up in a Sleep Cycle is bad. And after 30mins (as she mentioned in the video), you wake up better. For my experience napping for 30mins (not any minute longer!) has helped throughout tiredness in the day. I can recommend.

You should take naps that last maximum 9 minutes. After 9 minutes your body starts to think you are ready to properly sleep and if you were to wake up approximately 15-20 minutes after you start your nap then you will feel tired straight afterwards, not energised. The perfect nap time is 9 minutes 👍

I would love to hear about cultures and such that basically take a nap as part of their sleep. What I recall is that they will go to sleep but wake up and have a socialize period then go back to sleep.
personally, I like to wake up at 7am, take a 5 hour nap, and then take like 3 two-hour naps in between, and then sleep at 6pm maybe find like 30 minutes to watch a fe
I’ve been taking 30 minute naps for the past few years and I can safely say that it is the perfect amount of time and I wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the rest of my day every time!
The best naps are when you wake up all the way to check the time and can go all the way back to sleep with no questions. The 2nd best is when you fall asleep for 3 and a half hours after eating more than you should have at lunch when you didnt do anything that morning and tell everyone at dinner what a crazy Tuesday it's been so far
So a nap should be between 5 and 90 minutes long, sometime between the morning and the evening and it will definitely work for you if you're the right person for it...
That little cat hug got me "awwww". What an interesting video! I used to nap a lot when I'm busy. But when I have so much free time, I find it's harder to sleep.
I rarely sleep as is and so naps take my body hostage and turn into 3 to 4 hour sleep... Ugh I hate waking up groggy. I envy the people who can hop out of bed.
My favorite naps were during geography period which was always after lunch (around 11.30) and our teacher would always wind up like 5-10 minutes before and she'd allow us to do anything. I'd go to sleep straight away and when my friends would wake me up I'd be super energetic for the rest of the day

The equal split between nappers and nonnappers is really interesting. I wonder if the split developed as a response to maintain awareness as a group throughout the day. The nappers would nap throughout the day and be able to take night shifts more easily and the nonnappers would take day shifts. Some information that I can take in through this video (just positive, I'm not definately sure recording them)

The best nap of my life experience:
It was my first year at the University.

You should take naps that last maximum 9 minutes. After 9 minutes your body starts to think you are ready to properly sleep and if you were to wake up approximately 15-20 minutes after you start your nap then you will feel tired straight afterwards, not energised.
