One thing I noticed that might be considered flow, is when I’m given a task, complete it and go on to do tasks for others without them knowing cause I’m looking forward to the reaction. Nothing else matters, if I’m tired or hungry, and I have total focus on my goal. The minute I’m told to do something else or if I’m unappreciated, it all shatters and I’m done. 😂
I have personally experienced being in a flow state while drawing several times. When I enter my cozy art studio, sometimes I don't notice how fast the time flies, and for several hours, I experience the magic of art and being in a flow state. In my opinion, creative tasks can take us to a completely different level of flow state deep in our consciousness.
I believe different people reach this state of flow in different ways although there are common elements that are crucial for achieving it. Being passionate about something and enjoying it is crucial for me to be in the state where one is completely immersed in the activity. For me, reading is when I reach that state of flow. It challenges my mind but also relaxes me in ways that other activities don't. I also enjoy it tremendously. I am passionate about literature and reading so it's simultaneously challenging, enjoyable and comforting for me. Others might reach the same state while gardening, knitting, singing, running or playing an instrument.
this should be added, that if you're an amateur or incompetent, it will be impossible to reach flow state, because you will hit frustration with every task that you do
As someone who was diagnosed later in life with ADHD I didn’t understand my constant obsession with new hobbies many of which revolved around action sports such as downhill mountain biking or car racing, the actual hobby itself didn’t matter I was chasing flow. It wasn’t until I began a meditation practice and tried psychedelics that I had prolonged ego death, it felt familiar but I still didn’t make the connection to the selflessness experienced in flow. Although I improved the frequency I can enter into flow states and consider them to be up there with the most pleasurable experiences I’ve had I try not to chase the dragon and do my best to ease into with as little thought as possible. I recently won our car club championship and will give a speech at the presentation night and have been wanting to speak about flow states as I feel I did not really contribute much to winning the championship as I felt most of my best performance was entirely in flow and I was just the witness.

I always would enter flow ever since I was a kid, when doing math homework in class, when playing with legos, I would get sucked into it completing each task one after the other relentlessly without stopping. I’d get into flow when I played a video game too sometimes, and in adulthood I get it when studying language, when practicing piano, when reading. I know I’m in flow because my brain just gets completely saturated with the topic I’m immersed in, and I’m sort of zoned out from everything else, once I stop doing the task, I’m in a total daze and feel spaced out from everything, my brain just oozing with all the information I went through in whatever it was I was immersed in. Then at night when about to fall asleep, my brain is throwing all of the different patterns and data that went through it during my flow state at me in rapid succession (If I listened to a podcast in Chinese, while in bed about to fall asleep I hear like an echo chamber of different snippets of the voices in Chinese, even if I don’t understand everything they say for example) and while dreaming my dreams are filled with the activity or topic I was immersed in, the next morning when I wake up, all the stuff from the last day is crystallized in my mind from the dreaming. Something I found helps is almost refuted in a lot of social aspects we’ve developed into. When activating the flow state.. having the self-aware mindset of “I’m climbing the mountain, and if I go too fast I’ll fall.. but if I just sit here, I’ll never get up at all.” And keeping that direct illusionary feeling in my heart while I’m working gives me lots of flow energy. I noticed it when I used to play lots of competitive games and wanted to improve because of how immersed I would get with them.. but it wasn’t that I was immersed with the game itself, I was immersed with the idea of success. Yes enjoying the genre and specific game I was playing was a factor, but not a necessity. Separating your body/controller from your brain is a real eye opener because of how much we use those functions in unison with things like TH-cam comments or games that require muscle memory. Try it. Your entire body is separate controls, and with whatever you understand you need to do today.. you’re not doing it, you’re controlling yourself to do it better than you did before.
In fact, this is a wonderful feeling that fills our lives with meaning and a sense of self-satisfaction. This video was very relevant to me as I have been having a very hard time achieving said "flow" lately. I would like to know more about how to achieve it, but nevertheless it was interesting to learn more about this state. Thank you.😉
always called it 'the zone.' In those moments it's like I truly feel the invisible connection between everything and am being directed to the right movements.
When I first heard about this, approximately 30 years ago it was called being in “the Zone.” I still have the book I bought about it, only the name has changed. Having experienced it from a very young age (from about 4 years old) when engaged in my favourite activity, building with Lego! Time had no meaning for me. I still find myself there at times some 50+ years later , as stated in the video it’s never forced or planned, it just happens.
Normal people: flow. ADHD: hold my beer haunted by the work I had to finish until yesterday, I'm "flowing" in a totally different direction by learning a new skill on high speed.
Right, we sometimes experience this phenomenon in our tasks. When we feel this phenomenon, our concentration is super high, and so is performance level. Probably most people feel thrilled at that moment.
My advice is to practice meditation. Even if the challenge is hard for you, going in flow state is effortless, but need a little bit of perseverance, and if the task is easy, for me it's luck because chill can arise if it's easy.
It depends on 3 things: the mind, the body and you. if your body is too tired: the mind and you have to do the heavy work. If your mind is tired: the body and you must act, but it will be difficult since the mind is the one making rational decisions. If you are too tired: you cant allow for it to happen so easily, the "you" is the most important thing because you are the one that chooses wether to allow the vision of the mind and/or the body. It is an alignement of body and mind, aswell as you. To understand it easier. Accept this: your body and mind have desires and visions. Sometimes you oppose them, you resist some. Others you want to follow. When you think about "im going to my pc I want to play videogames" that urge or thought is a desire. Now you choose to allow it or resist it or ignore it or follow another desire. We have those all the time. So when all three: the body is not tired, the mind is ready and has a vision and thirdly you willingly have chosen to open that door because you think it will be fun, interesting, etc, and follow that vision. Then the inmense focus can happen. Now, remember. If you have not a vision yet. It cannot happen. It can be good. You are just a peaceful being, relaxed in your life. Now you have a vision, but it does not seem desirable, it will take a heavy burden it seems, it will be difficult to take any action. Not all desires are good for you, some will make you suffer and others. Choose this for yourself, wherever you are in your path. And if the body is not in condition it cant happen. Take care of your health. So you will have great results when time comes.
My furthest memory of getting into flow was on gran turismo 4! Sometime I would start playing mindlesly and permorfing better than I ever could than when I realy tried to focus. I always was surprised when my zoned off lap was my fastest of the race 😅
I experienced flow when I play tennis and while I love tennis am not always motivated to play so I don’t think finding something intrinsically motivating is necessary. I experienced as a complete silence of my thoughts. I usually can feel my breathing and a tingling sensation in my scalp and that’s it. Every shot is perfect. Am not in control, my body is. When I think about I feel like consciousness is a chatter that disturbs our being which is otherwise knows exactly what to do. As soon as a thought passes my mind I get disconnected and hit the ball wrong, until I quiet myself again. That’s why practice we say is about muscle memory so you train your body to react automatically without intervention from your conscious mind and that’s when the magic happens.
In sports it's called being in the zone. I've achieved it a few times playing table tennis, once in rec league basketball, 45 years ago when in college.
I enter follow while boxing or even making TH-cam videos about it, it's all about starting the work first then the more you do it the more you concentrate on it
I think that whoever do things absolutely enjoy in their life could easily concentrate no matter what they are up to :) So getting into the flow state mostly depends on what you're dealing with.
Hyper focus and flow state are sorta similar. Flow state is more relaxed and in the zone type of focus while hyper focus is actively thinking about the task and can be overthinking it.
I find it easier to concentrate if: - Spending half or entire Saturday doing nothing related to the stressful situation/work. Going out or doing something else helps. - Knowing that the Sunday would also be non-stressful. - Hence a restful Saturday night. - At the end of the Sunday, be mentally prepared for a new week.
How interesting it all is, the topic of flow immersively discussed by using the flowing animation as if they are filled by fluid and can be shapeless on any moment. The BGM was soothing. Video full of psychology. Kudos TED-ED!
As others in the comment section, i learnt a lot about this concept in the popular ongoing anime named “Blue Lock”. I have learnt various topics via Ted but ‘Flow’ and other related concepts were better grasped by me via “Blue Lock” anime. The clarity on this concept that the mangaka ‘Muneyuki Kaneshiro’ provided in the manga was amazing.
Flow is pinnacle of human brain focus. We have evolved in such a way that the brain functions major advantage is going into flow when we do things we like.
I usually reach that state when playing competitive chess or solving difficult geometry problems. I can say that true flow state doesn't require you to turn on ambient/motivating music at all.
It is fascinating to see this video because I have always been often entering this state of flow, but I never knew what the term for it is! just like they have mentioned, I can easily fall into this state by just doing something I know what to do and something I genuinely enjoy and have fun doing such as making designs, or illustrating. I found it difficult to enter the flow if I am not liking the actual task. Thanks for the content!
These cute animations literally made my cry, not because of the concept but the animation and music itself. I loved it. You see I am 26 but still watch cartoon and animations.
I once got into flow during marksmanship, I can’t even really describe it, it’s like I started my target and turned my brain off as my body just moved itself. That was one of my best targets.
once entered flow state for 48hrs back in 2021, I haven't been able to tap into that every again. it was a different type of high. ive never felt like that before. fast forward today I cant even trick myself into concentrating on simple things.
Entering flow state might require you to have a peaceful sense of mind and tranquil surroundings. You've got to understand what it means for you to be surrounded with that kind of setting.
Sometimes, but not always. Basketball players enter a flow state frequently when playing games, I personally flow when shooting (photography), and often there's fairly high bpm music playing.
Honestly it comes down to you wanting to do something, if you feel forced its like a candle that slowly burns out. It will burn out. 🕯💨 I know watching this gives you hope, like you will find a formula for it. But no, it is simply your mind and body wants something and you are not stopping it, you want it too. So there is no resistance or force until it is done and then your body and mind doesnt want it anymore. Sometimes it can be the other way around, you want something and your body and mind are ready for it, it can flow. So it is just that you allow your mind and body to focus because you all have agreed to enjoy this vision you have of something. It is natural, if you open all dams without anything inbetween in the river it will flow cause you literally opened it to.
Boy, that video was wild (the graphics). The content was great but I couldn't focus on it for the graphics. I watched it several times and every time I went into the weeds on the graphics. I finally just listened without looking at the screen. That is the only way I could stay focused. Probably just me but, c'est la vie.

My advice is to practice meditation. Even if the challenge is hard for you, going in flow state is effortless, but need a little bit of perseverance, and if the task is easy, for me it's luck because chill can arise if it's easy.
I read about 'flow' in ikigai book and i find it very interesting and vulnerable information .Everyone should implement the concept of 'flow'.
So you will have great results when time comes.
good conservation mate.
I enter the flow state so easily when dancing or doing contact improv. It's the best thing
THE ART STYLE IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's scary
Perfect timing I'm about to take a test too.
I hardly realized this was a 5 minute video because I was learning and processing so many things at once. Great video as always from Ted-Ed ❤
I totally agree with the balance between skill and challenge is important to concentrate on something.
me too
In game design, we have known this already for over 20 years. Because getting a player in a flow state is one of the ultimate achievements of a game
wowww
I enter follow while boxing or even making TH-cam videos about it, it's all about starting the work first then the more you do it the more you concentrate on it
Let it flow. Never force. Never think about it. Just do it.
I drink beer, go bike riding and listening to music with headphones. Its a great vibe. Love riding while buzzed
I think that whoever do things absolutely enjoy in their life could easily concentrate no matter what they are up to :) So getting into the flow state mostly depends on what you're dealing with.
this lines up oddly perfectly with the experience of hyper-focus in adhd
for an autistic like me, we call it hyperfocus. We can be in a state of flow for hours or even weeks! Love the animation as always
ADHD gang 🤝 Autism gang
Except deciding when and what to hyperfocus on is somehow impossible
@@andyzhang7890 hyperfocus won't just happen on it own unfortunately, it happence only when I'm motivated to do something :(
@@andyzhang7890 and you’ll end up not doing anything at all 🥲
Hyper focus and flow state are sorta similar. Flow state is more relaxed and in the zone type of focus while hyper focus is actively thinking about the task and can be overthinking it.
I am new to this concept but from my perspective this is a non-ADHD person trying to describe ADHD hyper focus. ADHD hyper focus is my favorite. :)
I find it easier to concentrate if:
- Spending half or entire Saturday doing nothing related to the stressful situation/work. Going out or doing something else helps.
- Knowing that the Sunday would also be non-stressful.
- Hence a restful Saturday night.
- At the end of the Sunday, be mentally prepared for a new week.
This has to be one of my favourite art styles, adore it!
bro, u a psychopath
tf are these animations
fr, this animation is kinda scary
They need a animator that's more in the flow
Thankyou! Like WTF lol
Fk your comment just break my flow while I’m watching this video. Jesus Christ that’s hilarious.😂
I think ur jealous
How interesting it all is, the topic of flow immersively discussed by using the flowing animation as if they are filled by fluid and can be shapeless on any moment. The BGM was soothing. Video full of psychology. Kudos TED-ED!
As soon as i start to feel immersed in something, i realize that I'm entering the flow state and that quickly gets me out of it
oh no...
Video starts at 4:02
Thank you mate
Actually It starts at 00:00
As others in the comment section, i learnt a lot about this concept in the popular ongoing anime named “Blue Lock”. I have learnt various topics via Ted but ‘Flow’ and other related concepts were better grasped by me via “Blue Lock” anime. The clarity on this concept that the mangaka ‘Muneyuki Kaneshiro’ provided in the manga was amazing.
Buddy... If you wanna understand flow even better.. Just see kuroko's basketball it's literally all about 'the zone' and flow
blue lock taught me 💪
Fr. Ego taught us how one can enter flow state better than this video
Flow is pinnacle of human brain focus. We have evolved in such a way that the brain functions major advantage is going into flow when we do things we like.
Me pretending to look at my math paper intently for 5 minutes before it went to the highest heavens.
damn, the animation is really accurate. prolly the best ted-ed video i've ever watched
this was actually the first ted ed animation ever that I really wasn't a fan of.
@@RR42636frfr?? omg
Blue Lock already taught me that
At least they explain it more in detail.
I love the animation style in this, so unique and vivid
Já consegui entrar uma vez no fluxo e a sensação é incrível
I'm autistic, and hyper-focus really easily. I've noticed that it can become a flow state, if there is a goal or purpose to my focus.
My experience when I code and it works!
for a while i could look a mathematical proof i was particularly proud of and immediately be motivated to do more
Love the bright style of drawing in this video
I usually reach that state when playing competitive chess or solving difficult geometry problems. I can say that true flow state doesn't require you to turn on ambient/motivating music at all.
Let's just take a moment of appreciation for the artist. The animation helped me to reach a tiny flow while watching the video :)
The artwork is not really my type, but the theme is really fascinating
It is fascinating to see this video because I have always been often entering this state of flow, but I never knew what the term for it is!
just like they have mentioned, I can easily fall into this state by just doing something I know what to do and something I genuinely enjoy and have fun doing such as making designs, or illustrating.
I found it difficult to enter the flow if I am not liking the actual task.
Thanks for the content!
Love the content and the weird animation style! ❤
freaky animation. great content.
Love these long form videos after getting out of my shorts addiction
i remember entering flow state(ultra instinct) while playing fighting games i was able to block every move coming towards me
These cute animations literally made my cry, not because of the concept but the animation and music itself.
Agree x10 🙂👍
Sometimes, but not always.
Basketball players enter a flow state frequently when playing games, I personally flow when shooting (photography), and often there's fairly high bpm music playing.
Personally I can only enter flow state when skydiving or other intense activities
I'd like to give a big thanks to all these burmese translators helping burmese people watch ted videos with burmese subtile 🎉❤
the animation was amazing!
I don't like it personally
It looks bad
This is what I really need right now
Not to confuse with ADHD hyperfocus
why i don't have hyperfocus even if I have every other symptoms 😢😢
@@babyjvadakkan5300 well there's different adhd types
That's exactly what I was doing😭
wow never heard of it, how are these 2 different, I guess they should make a video on that too
im so lucky to have experienced flow before
Great animation as always ❤
For me, that theory about the task being moderate level difficult, instead of too easy or difficult, is true and helps me achieve the state of flow.
Flow is very common that everyone could see it eventhough if they are not scientist 😮
the animation was SO SATISFYING
You can measure inattention but not attention: jiddu krishnamurti
Honestly it comes down to you wanting to do something, if you feel forced its like a candle that slowly burns out. It will burn out. 🕯💨
I know watching this gives you hope, like you will find a formula for it.
The creativity in this video is simply astounding ❤
4:00 thank me later
Thanks bro
Boy, that video was wild (the graphics). The content was great but I couldn't focus on it for the graphics. I watched it several times and every time I went into the weeds on the graphics. I finally just listened without looking at the screen. That is the only way I could stay focused. Probably just me but, c'est la vie.
Love Ted-ED, but the animation is scaring me lol
It was gratifying the day I realized I can get into a writing flow frequently
watching this video cuz i can’t focus on my homework 😭
