Wahoo! I just love these vintage Williams, and all vintage, reviews! Glad to know about the generations of the S--52s. That's a mighty fine-looking DS-4 too. Great vid, Ty.
I have another version of this Williams ratchet..A newer version they went back to the socket head screw in the head....really good ratchet...love..it....👍.
I believe there are 3 versions, with the most current being S-52A, which has a SK/Facom "Tuff One" mechanism with a heart shaped ring spring and screw design with 17 teeth engagement, but they have 'screw issues', too tight you can't move the gear, too loose, the screw backs out. I have all 3 versions and prefer version 2.
Nice review. I apparently have a gen 2 version in my horde of ratchets. My dad and I both used it for years as our only 1/2" go-to. We need to see more cat!
First, I thought you did a video about the first generation about a year or two ago. Secondly, I have two of the second generation ratchets that are factory bent left and right into half moon shapes. The retired LADWP pipefitter I got them from stated that they were made that way to be able to bolt water mains together. It gives you more swing as opposed to a straight ratchet.
I have an s52 in pristine condition I fought like hell getting opened up I found out just putting the handle in the vice isn't enough. The vibration fights against you when you're using a light hammer and little screw driver. It's more effective to put it in the vice by the anvil first. Wish I would have figured that out first LoL hindsight is always 20/20 LoL
can you review on j.h williams 3/4 inch super ratchet h-51 i cant find any history i beleive i have 1st gen it is forged writting. trying to figure out age thank you
I'm not sure that the version 1 you have has the original screw on the switch. I have one and the screw is larger and flatter and fits tightly inset into the recess of the switch, sitting flush with the top.
Each pawl engages in an alternating pattern. The ratchet spindle only needs to move half as many degrees for the other pawl to engage compared to a single pawl. So 2 degrees instead of 4, or 3 instead of 6, etc.
I love seeing the Williams videos. A few friends parents and grandparents worked at the Buffalo plant.

I've noticed similar "revisions" or generations keeping the same nomenclature in other brands, Thorsen being the first one that comes to mind.
Funnny enough my S-52 williams came in today 1/2 hahaha!!!!

Try using a watch wrench on the 2nd gen. Applying even pressure on three points of the ring may keep it from binding when you go to unthread it.
Great videos. Have you tried the tool used to remove watch backs? It might work on the second generation wrench.

I have the first gen b-52
I'm not sure how offset pawls would give double the teeth. It sounds like it makes sense, but I'm having trouble visualizing it.

@@GearHeadHam Ok I think I get it. I was thinking both sets of pawls would still be engaged instead of one at a time.
The reverse switch is left hand thred
There are 3 gen can't get parts for first two
Do you have an idea how old is s52 1st gen?
Williams is a name that still great . Usa suff is the price star of usa and totally out snap on icon .
I had a stroke reading your comment.
