    • @kennethbailey2616
      @kennethbailey2616 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brendan Marriott All I can remember is the “Baker” target was a 10” circle for the 500 m prone. The “Dog” target simulated the profile of a man in the prone position at the 300 m sitting and kneeling. I can’t recall the size of the target for the 200 m offhand. Seems like it was similar in size to the Baker target. We used a 6 o’clock hold in those days. Later it was changed to a center mass hold.

      @@kennethbailey2616 That's the way to train.....With open sights FIRST...before relying on a scope.
      100 yds with open sights is same as 1000 yds with a 10x scope.
      Most think they don't need much more than 10x but yet can't group for shit at 100 yds with open sights. Lol

    I'm new to long range shooting I just put a 6 X 24 Power Scope on my Weatherby it's my dream rifle and I finally finished it with a Zeiss 6 X 24 by 50 Conquest 4 scope I didn't have the money to put something really nice on it like a VX 6 Leopol... My rifle is a 300 Weatherby Magnum Mark 5 Deluxe.. I haven't fired it yet or sight it in... I've never owned a rifle this nice before in my life. So I'm pretty excited about going out and shooting it for the first time. I also had a muzzle brake installed on it to reduce recoil..

    A good rule of thumb if you purchase a fixed power scope make it a fixed 10x, but at most 12x. Any stronger than that it will pick up to much mirage if the outside temp is high. For a variable power scope buy 1 power for every 100 yards you mite shoot. For instance. If you mite shoot 1500yrds get a max 15 power scope. I have a 3-18x50 Vortex Razor myself. I have shot over a mile with it. 1 mile = 1760yrds so there for 18 power scope. My target was 12”x12” steel plate. Very easy to see. Hope this helps.

      I respectfully disagree. For shooting pd's or smaller game at 500 yards and over I use 20x power scope and sometimes it feels like I could use more. I say use what YOUR eyes say you need. I'd rather have a 20x variable and turn it down then 15x power and not able to turn it up.

    Marines were picking off German soldiers in excess of 700 yards with iron sights in World War 1. Couple of years after Quigley Down Under came out people were shooting black powder cartridge rifle rounds 10 and 12 in at 1200 yards with iron sights. I believe the world record for smokeless powder at a thousand yards was only seven and three quarters at the time.

    I do wish you would cut out the cover music, it camouflages the words you are saying, and makes it very difficult to understand what you are saying! Every bit as bad as wind noise!
    I really don't understand the reasoning behind all the background music/noise so many you tubers insist on playing and then try to tell a story to the public. It is counter intuitive and a waste of time. Use it in your intro and sign off if you must, but please leave it out of your dissertations.

    Best 'down-scale' scope I never thought I'll say. Quality of the lens helps. If I knew what I know now. I'll pick a fixed scope anytime. Nightforce don't do fixed as far as I know. Pick what's comfortable. You're buying it😁

      I hear people say that . However to a certain degree it's kind of like another way of saying it depends how much handicap you want to give yourself . For me the answer is none , so long as I cannot actually afford the accessory and it doesn't have a form factor that negates the purpose of the rifle . I can shoot without optics , but I always shoot better with them close or far.

    On average 25 zoom is max for most 2K+ scopes, you need light and color etc, to get zoom.(light transmission.
    Clearest i looked threu was a Zeis Henshold 6x24-72.
    Also threu a Scmit%Bender 50x zoom and a March 60 zoom, beyond 30/40 less details you will see.
    Also depends on what duty youre scope will do.
    Bench rest/F-class, or just 100 meters, or tactical shooting.
    Pick a good scope than can do, with can do atleast 25x,

    I really didn't understand how little zoom you needed until I took my 6-24X50 out to the range for the first time and could see my hits at 500 yards perfectly fine. Anybody that watched that video and was underwhelmed by the lower magnification, seeing it on video is only about 1/3 as zoomed as it is in real life since the lens takes up way more of your vision than your computer or phone screen does.

    This is just me and my opinion, what we have here is the shooter's frame of mind. One thing you brought to the table. the giggle of the crosshairs. The higher the power the amplified the disturbance, Thuss the more distracted the shooter becomes. In your mind, your thoughts are to control the giggle and settle the aim. It becomes more and more difficult to do so the more you try. This leads to "Now.. Now.. Get it NOW"!! and you rush your shot and slam the jerk on the trigger trying to anticipate the recoil in the control of the crosshair. This throws the shot into wherever the crosshairs were at the moment the bullet left the crown. and you just can't snapshot that. Learning how to control your thoughts is one of the most challenging things in good marksmanship. People have a tendency to try to Buy their way into accuracy instead of learning How to think and aim. as far as Glass, I feel that a digitally enhanced target won't make you a better shot. a reasonably clear optic that passes the box test is all you need, Like you stated, 3X9 will suffice for 98% of all shooting.

    Im very much a beginner, ive only had my long range platform a couple of weeks,prior to this the furthest i had shot was 200m. I m running a Burris xtr2 8-40 ffp with f class moa reticle. I was close to buying a lower powered optic, but at least one of my friends was pushing me for higher mag and im glad i did! Now ive not had the opportunity to stretch this rifle legs past 500m yet (range limit) but up to that even i find it far easier to shoot anything past 100m wit higher mag, im not just talking about scoring hits on steel, because thats very achievable, see guys doing it all the time with milsurps with irons, im talking consistent groups on paper.I really find it far easier to get more consistent point of aim with higher mag, even if we are talking shooting at 100m with a 22lr! I consistently shoot tighter groups at 100m with rifles with decent magnification , say 12-14 than other with 8 or less. Ive got 3 scoped .22lr's to choose from in my safe right now, all sub moa and all have good quality glass, but different power levels. Fixed 4,fixed 8 and 4-12 are the options and when we talking about getting as close to the potential of the rifles, the higer mag sure helps me to get there.
    This is just my experience, im no spring chicken and for sure my eyes arent what they used to be (when i was 20 I could hit birds in the head @20m with irons on an old springer .177!) and i would have found it easier when i was younger for sure!

    Good informative video,When customers bring up the subject of scope magnification I tell them If your looking at a target at 100yds with a 4x scope the target appears like it would at 25 yds with the naked eye.
    ThenI ask them what power scope they think was used on the 1903A4,M1C,M1D used in WW2 & Korea .When I tell them that the M81 & M82 was only 2.5 power & the M84 was 2.2 they go WOW
    Yes and those Snipers engaged & hit targets up to 1000yds.
    Carlos Hathcock favored the 8 power Unertl scope,Chuck Mawhinney used a Redfield 3x9 Accurange scope But he kept it on 9x so the POI wouldn’t change.
    A good quality fixed power scope is actually better than a adjustable power scope
    As with a low quality adjustable scope POI can change going from low to higher powers.

    I think the advantage of a higher power scope is to use it as a dual purpose. You can crank it up to see more detail if needed or as a spotting scope. And adjust down for a steadier reticle and shot. But if needed you have the extra zoom. But it isn’t a must. A good 4-14 will get most people where they need to be. Great video.

    If you have good eyes you don't need much but if your eyes suck like mine you need a good scope with plenty of power. I can use 3x9 for hunting up to about 300yds but after that I need more. For target shooting I like around 20x

      Interesting suggestion, I haven’t heard that is what they suggest, however I think as a military force you want a wide field of view, it could save your life knowing what’s coming from any side! Stationary Target shooting is a bit different and I would agree with you

      @momouppa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Go to a smallbore benchrest shoot and have a look at the optics used, how the military employs optics and how civilians do can be completely different. An abrbitary number like 1x per 100 yards is not helpful.

    • @trbig67
      @trbig67 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      This is because in the military, the goal is to hit a man-sized target at 1,000 yds. The goal is to hit anywhere on a person in the military. If you are happy being able to hit somewhere on a 2'x6' target, then by all means, stick with that. My goal is all headshots or center of mass, so per the original poster, John, I agree. The closer I can bring the target to me, the more detail, the better shot placement. Zooming out doesn't make the wiggles go away, it just hides them so you can pretend they aren't there.

    Nice comparison. Did you adjust parallax between distances? I don't mean to insult your intelligence. It just looked a but fuzzy in the video at longer range.
    I absolutely agree with you on being able to shoot long distance with low power. I have a rifle set up for supported prone with a 3-15x scope. When I went to use it for NRA High Power Long Range, at a 1,000 yard match, the scope was too close to my eye to use it at 15x in the sling supported prone. I had to back it out to 10x to eliminate scope shadow. My first time shooting this match with that rifle, and I got a High Master score three times consecutively (97% of available points). On 10x, I could see the scoring rings on the target.

      As far as you being able to see, absolutely that scope will do it. And I know what you mean about the crazy prices! Dude a great option is SWFA fixed power scopes. They are all 300$ but they have a 30 mm tube and there turrets have lots of adjustment to get you to 1,000 Yards. Depending on your cartridge choice it may be difficult for you to adjust the scope and do hold overs. By all means try! But down the road an SWFA scope really is a bargain for the beginning long range shooter

    Great vid. Here in Iron County Utah I've had great success with the fixed SWFA SS 10X 700LR .30-06 (175g SMK) and a SWFA SS 12X 77V .280Rem (168g SMK). Both shoot 1km fine, and really shine at 600m. With higher magnification mirage kills you in summer. MOA same preference over MRAD.

    There's no such thing as harder to hold still. You're either still or your not and if you're shaking then so will the scope. If you can't hold it on target at 50x then you can't hold on target at 2x. You just happen to see how crappy you are at holding the gun. Zooming out to remove shake can't make you more accurate unless you got so much shake you're going cross-eyed and bothering you that much. At that point, you may as well find a better rifle support.
