I think his best friend was a "faithful first knight" (who could be Solaire idk) and then second Ornstein, because Ornstain instead was serving both Nameless king and this "faithful first knight". But yeah it makes sense that he could fight like Ornstein too
Im basing myself in the "Sacred Oath" description from ds3

This is my first time seeing Nameless' statue restored in original DS1. He looks completely different, more like a young squire rather than somebody who could really betray his kingdom. He also started using his dad's shampoo after banishment, apparently.
Edit: I just wanted to emend and correct myself - I meant he does not look like betrayer, not that I believed in him being one. Cheers.

Betray is a strong word. The people he "betrayed" were mostly power hungry gods and used his willingness to work with the evolving dragons as an excuse to banish him and seize power for themselves. Allying the dragons, rather than continuing the stagnant ways of Gwyn and his ilk may have potentially seen some benefit *for* his kingdom.

Not once in dark souls has the player ever witnessed true sunlight magic/miracles. Gwyn didn’t even use it in 1. All player cast miracles are just imitations used by reciting stories of sunlight magic.
It wasn’t until dark souls 3 do we see sunlight magic used by the Nameless King. It’s no wonder he’s so powerful/difficult to fight.

This was one of my favorite moments in my first DS3 playthrough
When I first fought the Nameless King I genuinely felt his move set was familiar but when I saw how he attacked and what he was wearing he just screamed "Gwyn" in the back of my mind.
I was in complete shock when I realized I was fighting the First Born, like I had always wondered who he was playing through the games after reading the item description in of the Sunlight Medal in DS1
It was like a huge reveal just showing itself to me in single combat honestly the highlight of DS3 for me.

Thanks for showing the Sunlight Altar statue painstakingly put back together and comparing it to Gwyn and the Firstborn. It's curious that Gwyn seems to have ab armor of some kind on the rear plate for his torso. It's almost like the armor was accidentally put on backward, but with how even the intro cutscene uses the final game's arrangement, it probably wasn't an accident. The Firstborn looks and sounds like a hollow in DS3, whereas Gwyndolin, for all the abuse he has suffered and the time that has passed, is still recognizable as his DS1 self. If the queen of Lothric is indeed Gwynevere, rather than a daughter who took closely after her (a Ranni to her Rennala, so to speak), then Gwynevere is still able to have kids, but the Firstborn is all sorts of messed up. It doesn't seem like age did that to him, it's as though someone cursed him and burned his soul to fuel the First Flame. Perhaps removing the Firstborn's deific status wasn't just a symbolic gesture, and he was given the same treatment as the non-divine, the humans, and hit with the Darksign.
    Thanks again, Crest!

I think the implication is that Gwyn and the other gods are not much different from humans. Gwyn in a sense went hollow after lighting the first flame and the Nameless King is more like an undead lacking humanity after many ages have passed. The Nameless King is likely the last of the old gods surviving in the world by DS3. In a way the straight line he took was the long way around.

It's really cool to see how much of the Dark Souls series is converged in the Nameless King, the boss. The lore, the fighting styles, a dragon of course, if anything could sum up Dark Souls it's that fight. Even the way get to Archdragon Peak, there's nothing more Dark Souls than hiding the best part from the players. It takes massive balls to do that aswell. There are so many stories and questions that are finally answered with Archdragon Peak and the Nameless King. As a fan of world-building and non-conventional (and GOOD) storytelling, I consider Miyazaki to be one of the greats.

It's wild to think that if Gwyn was at his prime, he'd be even faster and more deadly than the Nameless King since the lighting storms and lighting bolts the NK uses to move around and speed/buff up his attacks was originally a power created and gifted to him by Gwyn
Not only that Gwyn also would've had relatively advanced pyromancy from manipulating first flame and from being so closely related to the queen of Izolith and maybe he would've had some abyssal sorcery and occult sorcery tricks he picked up from the Pygmy Kings and Goddess Velka respectively

This has confirmed a couple things for me.
The Nameless King was Ornstein's mentor and teacher: This perhaps was obvious to most, but to see what the "original" fighting style of Dragonslaying was like is really dope. Also this confirms that The Nameless King was an innovator, and considered for this reason among many, a betrayer. You can see this with his fighting style, wherein there is the foundation in Gwyn who's likely been a formidable warrior and effective teacher, buy upon which the Nameless King innovated, and created new moves, more suited for the slaying of Dragons.
Hollows are not inherently insane, rather, their attachment to their souls, humanity, customs, traditions is what leads to their insanity upon their loss.
Gwyn was but a husk of his former self, only capable of fighting to the extent which led to the kiln, thus despoiling him of all else. The Nameless King on the other hand had no attachment to anything except for what is just, hence his standing up against the cruelty dealt to the ancient dragons, his divesting of all that stems from the fire, and his embrace of perpetuity in the ways of the dragons.
The followers of the way of dragons are those who live at peace, attached to nothing and living in the moment

The statue for the Nameless King in DS1 looks like Grave Keeper Agdayne from DS2, in terms of clothing. I could be wrong, it could be the clothing of those blue guys in Earthen Peak with their spears.

fun factoid including the chicken nameless king has 3 phases (no cutscene not to big to notice but he gains a few moves at half health when he is doing it solo notably more lightning based moves) more of a phase 2.5 but still.

I guess it makes sense the sunlight altar is about Gwyn, he's the only one who can make a Lightning made of Sun Light as you can read in the miracle SunLight spear, while his son inherited the Lightning as you can read in his weapon.

The dark souls series really makes me hope that Miyazaki continues elden ring like how he continued dark souls. Imagine elden ring like 100-200 years after the events completely changed lands between but with homages back to old bosses and characters. Would be awesome however it seems like there will not be a sequel.

It’s a bit of a missed opportunity that they didn’t try to add some billowing effects to Nameless King; not only would it tie back to another Gwyn comparison, but it would also make sense as you fight him in a storm of raging winds.
