I've always liked the "Oh, I don't get upset, I have people to do that for me" line because he does actually seem to stay calm up until he starts running out of people to get upset for him.
I always got the impression that up until the spirit bomb, which is the first thing that seems to really scare him, Frieza is just pissed at the gang for making him do so much actual work.

He's even mostly calm when he's beating the crap out of Vegeta. It's pretty much not until Goku shows up that he starts to lose it. Goku just being a total dumbass and not caring about Freeza's banter just gets under his skin (similar to how pissed Vegeta got with him during the Saiyan Saga).
We even see that again on Earth when Freeza and King Cold show up. Freeza and his dad both remain "chill" right up until Trunks starts cutting everyone to bits. Then they get really mad really fast (EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE and "test it's blade on you, you insubordinate hick!").
When Pretty Pink Princess and Daddy don't get their way they start having temper tantrums. And Cooler tried not to, but still ultimately did. They don't like not being in control of the situation.
I've always imagined that Freeza has his own anger translator, like Obama has Luthor

Frieza keeping count of all the times he heard specific heroic speeches is one of my favorite reoccurring jokes from season 2.
Especially when Goku shows up later.

The brilliant thing about it, is that although its funny, it doubles as a serious way to establish just how evil and threatening Frieza really is.

I love how Frieza saying "were a traveling improv group, well play a group of drunken sailors and youre a bunch of baby seals" has the absolute perfect amount of threatening malevolence but just the right amount of sass that it makes this probably my favorite scenes. that hand motion is perfect
The fact that he said it so casually is just chef kiss, freezer is a character that knows he's 100% evil and enjoy every bit of it, pretty much like Jack Horner turn out to be
I always headcanoned that Frieza started counting the heroic lines after that scene with Bardock's speech boring him so badly he nearly fell asleep. Makes it really come full circle when Goku then becomes the first person to say one Frieza has never heard before haha

That is pretty strongly implied in the Bardock super saiyan movie they did, yeah. Which is indeed, hilarious. Also annoys me, because it means he's heard certain lines more often from before he started counting. So the count is OFF!

I thought it was cause Roshi thought no way could goku put the two and two together that Dr. Briefs could build him the ship he needed.
To be fair, Dr. Brief is a scientist specialized in engineering and as lupvirga said he modifies and improves Kami's ship. Goku's ship is modeled after Kami's ship and the Saiyan ships. It's not like him building Goku one comes out of nowhere.

It took me this long to realize Dende developed a crush on Gohan in part because he literally saved his life
And being nice, sane, and competent. Really compared to almost everyone else Dende met, Gohan was the obvious choice.

What I love about the scene where Doctor Briefs explains the controls to Goku is it feels like he's the only person in the show that actually knows how to explain things not related to fighting to Goku.

LittleKuriboh as Freeza is possibly my favorite voice in the entire show, and that's saying something because all the voices in this show are incredible. It's to the point that I miss his voice if I ever go back and watch the original DBZ!
That's the only downside tbh, season 2 is easily my favourite of the three seasons.
I love Krillin’s “THAT THING’S A GUY!?” Killed me first time watching
This creator commentary series is amazing, because it gives us a chance to look back at the serious through the actual creator’s perspective. If you ask me, the series was amazing as it is, so I wouldn’t have changed anything. The abridged series was a childhood classic.

Frieza is such a villainous delight in this! You did such a good job writing him as someone who’s been through so many heroics (The list of lines).
One has to wonder what the threshold is before he starts counting. Apparently it's less than 12.
And the fact established that all these heroes obviously failed against him at the end always to the point that's normal thing to Frieza

Ah, yes episode 13. The first episode of DBZA I came upon. I remember stumbling upon this episode, I believe on April 11th, 2010. When I heard "So, after seven hundred and thirty-one grueling galactic weeks of travel or one month if you never watched Men in Black" my sibling and I laugh for a solid minute. I turned to them and said 'We're going to the beginning of this series." Been a fan since then.
So, Episode 13 holds a special place in my heart.
Watching Frieza count how many times he's heard heroic speeches makes his complete shock at everything Goku says even better.
Kaiser really should've put "where did that scouter come from?" on screen whenever Cui's scouter reappeared.

The designs of Freiza's minions is a real testament to Toriyama's mix-and-match art style. It could come off as generic, and sometimes does, but when it hits, it gives you a cavalcade of interesting, unique enemies to plow through.

Admittedly, I had to look this up, but it was Susan who named Ben "The Thing"; well, she called him "a thing", and he decided to keep that moniker (I'm what Sue called me- The Thing")
Of course, this was when Ben got pissed about Sue being turned invisible, the flight going wrong, and how Sue should be with him instead of Reed, so he decided to attack RR.
(The specific line was "He's turned into a-- a-- some sort of a thing! He's as strong as an ox!!")

Honestly Krillin being a jerkass during this season makes sense to me. He just spent a month doing NNN out of season, found out he is the strongest person on their team (until Gohan gets mad for a second)on a planet where everyone outmatches them by multiple times and the person who has the most reasons to kill them on sight just landed. Dudes stress limit has popped off and it shows.

I just realized that Gohan asking krillin if he feels frieza's power level is basically the start of the gag that eventually leads to bulma's "I feel that" and piccolo's response during perfect cell, which is still one of my favorite jokes
I never realized it until someone pointed it out, but Frieza letting people get upset for him works when you realize that he starts really losing his shit once every member of his army on namek is dead.
I was actually starting to think of venture bros when you started discussing Dr. Briefs, but he more brings to mind Dr. Fantastic
It becomes really obvious once you see Professor Impossible from VB, since he’s very much a blatant portrayal of that version of Reed Richards.

Frieza is one of the best written characters in this series. Funny and charming while instantly being cold and vicious when needed. The whole counting heroic lines in his head is so evily-funny.

Ive seen episode 13 a dozen times alone and I'd never clued in that Krillin's screaming gets stronger after he sees Cui's pod. Absolutely brilliant detail!
Whenever I watch this episode and the Bardock special in close temporal proximity, I always love the continuity from Frieda being bored through Bardock’s speech to him finding something fun to do during heroic speeches here. Also love the implication that all this counting has occurred just over the course of Goku’s lifetime. So about 20 “that wasn’t part of our deal!”s per year.
i loved the smartassery of the editor for this while scott was talking about the panning shot he was so proud of just starts panning the shot of the two of them while talking.
I like to think that Frieza started the heroic speech count after Bardock. You guys didn't do it in the Movie so I assume that after wiping the sayins, he continues conquering the galaxy and starts really paying attention how many times he hears those speeches. It makes it even crazier that after over 30 years, he's heard at least 500 different speeches from different beings.
It was heavily implied that after Bardock's pre-death babble he started counting.heavyli
Of course, could be plenty of planets with multiple heroic speeches- I'm presuming several line got multiple bumps from the previous Namekian villages.

I don't think I can express how much I genuinely love this rewatch with you guys. From learning how much more you put into the series, to your reactions to jokes that still got me laughing after all these years, it's just such a fun nostalgia ride that really makes me appreciate TFS and Dragon Ball as a series even more. I watched these episodes in elementary school so i thought krillin had been holding his pee in for a month and got it everywhere.
The funny thing is Venture Brothers actually did have their own brand of Mister Fantastic, called Professor Impossible, and it was pretty much basically the same character.
Every time I hear the word cappuccino I always quote "It's not coffee, its cappuccino!"
Though I usually say "Now I'll be right back" even though there was other dialogue in the middle lol
This is always where I start my rewatches of DBZA. This is where DBZA really starts to shine.

1:35 Krillin screaming for like 30 seconds is probably my second favorite DBZA joke of all time.
It's pretty hard to beat "I'm going to break you... like a Kit Kat bar" which is one of the greatest lines in all of fiction.
My favorite part about this comedy is seeing how good of pals you two are! I don’t know why, but seeing you two make jokes and explain stuff together is great

Even though you guys have a lot of could've, would've and should halves, everyone involved in the DBZA are amazingly talented, and this is still hilarious and worth watching many, many, many times. I mean, there are so many great jokes- for me, its Vegeta, especially "Wait, how can you be Semi-Perfect? You're either perfect or you're not me" (followed by "Huh, this is a new feeling: pride in someone else. Unfortunately, it's overshadowed by all this UNYIELDING RAGE!")

Ben did a great job as Nail, I’m a little iffy on Taka doing it. I think he absolutely could have come up with a great voice for the character, but I don’t know if he could have matched or improved in the energy (or lack thereof) that Ben brought to the dynamic between his Nail and Taka’s Guru.
When I first heard the joke about Freeza counting the speeches, I *thought* he meant he had numbered them by when he heard them. So "We're going to **** your FACE" was extra funny to me because it would have been the 12th speech he had ever heard.
Oh, yeah, that's 100% the joke.

I have legitimately watched the entirety of this show more times than any other show, movie, or series. Hearing y’all’s commentary on your creation is super interesting and always adds more when I go back and watch it! I also have to say that I appreciate y’all respecting everyone’s personal views, and not just those you agree with. I may not personally agree with everything that y’all believe in, but you have always found a way to make your beliefs heard in a way that doesn’t feel like you are pushing it onto your audience. That’s something to be applauded and respected, especially in this day and age. Thank y’all again for this incredible “thing that you are doing”!

Lol, just finished catching up on the creator commentary and this drops. hell yeah.
The reason Reed Richards is written the way he is is because each of their powers is supposed to be an inversion of their character. Reed Richards has an inflexible worldview, but his powers are to be the most flexible man in the world. Sue Storm is an outgoing attention seeker, but her power is to become invisible. Ben Grimm is very sensitive, but he becomes an invincible rock man. I forget what the Human Torch's thing was.
I feel like that's something a lot of modern adaptations miss with these characters.

14:52 This is imo the best joke in the entire series and what made TFS Frieza my favorite character. Season 2 with the introduction of Frieza is for me the exact moment you took the show into the stratosphere and never left it until the end.
