    Had this done to me when I was working retail. Got a colleague to open another checkout while I painstakingly counted £20 worth of coppers. The two kids buying a loads of snacks thought it was hilarious for the first 30 seconds, but 20 mins in the laughter had gone and I reminded them that _I'm paid to be here._

    • @lukeslayer
      @lukeslayer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Being broke isn't something that's funny, 850 quid is the equivalent to around $1500 AUD where I live and that sort of money when you're living week by week can cripple you. The guy is a douche for doing what he's doing, Anyone with half a brain knows that you can make payment arrangements for debts if you're not in a financial position to pay it full sum so in that regards and the lack of knowledge he has with the tender laws he's a twat but being broke, that's majority of the worlds issue, the sad reality is most people live day by day or week by week.

    • @666m111
      @666m111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's not laughable it's a completely different thing in fact.
      Instantaneous transactions can be refused by any merchant, during any point of the sale. So even if it is legal tender, it can be refused.
      It's why shop can refuse to take £50, or can take it but not give you any change (yes, they're allowed to not give you change, if they can't change it).
      Whereas all legal tender has to be accepted, by law, for payment of debts. Its where the limits come in, coins stop being legal tender after hitting a bench mark of the price.
      So you can't pay more then 20p in 1/2ps, more than £5 in 5/10ps, more than £10 in 20/50ps. After that you can pay any amount in £1+
      People who actually do this stuff are arse holes though, and need slapping

      Also just seen about the 2003 one too. Apparently the coinage act is legit for purchasing stuff ie you cant go to currys and buy a 2 grand tv in pennies, however in theory you could in pound coins.
      However when it is paying off a debt, legal tender is legal tender and if you can only pay in pennies then that can be accepted. If the debt collecter refuses to accept that, thats on them. What he could do is ask them to prove their is £850 in pennies and then ask them to double and triple check making it no longer fun for them before he takes it to the bank and a machine does it for him for a final time lol
