I love this interviewer. He has a genuine interest in actors and what attracts them to roles. Actors seem very relaxed and happy to chat, zero pressure to sell their movie or give a soundbite. I always feel after having watched them that I understand a little better their viewpoints on their craft, the business and sometimes daily life. Kudos as always. Also Willem is a charming, enthusiastic artist. I love his work and clearly he loves his roles.
I love Willem Dafoe. He is a great actor who genuinely loves his craft and has a genuine interest in the characters he plays. And he is also a humble and a wonderful person.
Willem is one of the most honest actors I've ever seen. Every thought and movement is completely absent of pretense. That's what makes him one of the greatest. Lying doesn't make you a great actor; the ability to honestly tap into and relate to the feelings of a character and all their experiences is what makes a great actor.
This man is a consummate artist. He is like a jazz musician who studies his craft and the music then goes on the stage with his horn and let's the music and the moment tell him what to play. It's orchestrated and spontaneous at the same time. He was iconic in the movie.
@@sepehrkhalili-tari1896 idk maybe it works. It just seemed like a strange line to represent the secret of the light. Willem yelling spill the beans with glowing eyes came off as hammy to me at the time.
Wow, you can tell he is just in love with the art. He loves the worlds, loves the possibilities. Even after all he's done he continues to find the magic with projects like this..
You NEED to interview Eggers! The few times he actually gets interviewed by anyone with some merit his answers are spectacular and I think this format would really fit him. I haven't said it in a good long while but this channel is spectacular and I hope it keeps going for many years to come :)
He is without a doubt one of the most informative, articulate actors I've ever heard. I love him! His tenor, motives, and being for acting is just right in every way.
Excellent interview as usual. You always manage to get actors' candid personalities in a way I haven't seen other interviewers do very well. This is the kind of archival footage people will look back on to get a better idea of who these actors were.
Up until I saw The Lighthouse my favourite psychological thriller was The Shinning. And then I saw this masterpiece 3 times in 2 days and fell madly in love.
The performances in this film are really good. The kind of stuff where you can actually see the work, the actual job of being an actor and not just a guy standing there looking himself so the movie can sell itself on star power alone.
Willem is amazing to watch as an actor and more amazing in these natural interviews. No pompousness but very real, love to hear him describe his process, that's the only thing I need to know for his films. When there's a film I haven't seen of his, I seek out an interview relating to it and skip the trailer. He's a joy to watch. And extra special thanks for your incredible channel, thanks for long form thought provoking interviews, as always.
I absolutely adore Willem Dafoe... I wish I had the privilege to have even a brief conversation with him. I think of him as a truly unique soul when it comes to the art of acting. Wonderful interview!
Just saw The Lighthouse and now treating myself to this interview, another great conversation David! So glad you do these interviews because they seem quite authentic unlike the late night tv show Pres junkets you usually see on mainstream media. Also love how you interview all sorts of people from all sorts of films. Keep it up!
Such an interesting and generous man. I loved the film, the sense of place, the look of it, the language, its abiguity and of course the committed, wonderful performances. Bravo.
hey man your interviews are genuinely such an amazing and valuable resource for the kinds of movies that matter, at least as far as movies go. just wanted to voice that appreciation.
@@dp30 eggers would honestly be great. maybe someone can finally pin him on, if not an interpretation, then at least a path towards one. or hell, even several interpretations

Love it when Dafoe inadvertently puts the spotlight on the interviewer “ have you made films?” and the interviewer responds by fumbling through some bs about how he made short films as a kid. 😂 Not the same thing buddy. Stop with the pretentious questions about “ do you come to the film with your character fully formed?”..jeezus shut up already. Dafoe is one of the more articulate and intelligent actors there is when explaining “ craft” ...just let him talk and don’t waste his time with repetitive, reparaphrased questions. Some further advice to the interviewer...don’t lead with your questions..”did you like the movie?..were you surprised? ( before Dafoe even answered the first question)...and don’t assume with your questions and put parameters on your subject’s answers ( you do this a lot) e.g you ask the question “ Was working on this film difficult.( then say before they answer) “ I would imagine it must have been difficult” .. bad interviewing technique that 14 year old high school students would avoid. And don’t respond with” I like to keep my interviews informal maaann”..bullshit..even “casual “film chats with great artists should be prepared and thought out..DP30 is a great channel with excellent access to film artists but i would suggest you work on streamlining your questions concisely or get someone else to interview for you and you hold the camera since you’ve made ..ahem..”short films “when you were a toddler.
