Norton Nemesis V8 rebuild - Episode 9

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 23 พ.ย. 2024
- In this video I'm fitting the new alternator gear and assembling the lower and intermediate crankcases and checking the function of the oil pump
Note: All parts will be thoroughly cleaned before final assembly, so any debris , swarf dust of dirt seen under macro cinimatography in this video will be cleaned off later.
The Norton Nemeses is a pre production prototype that was made in the late 90's with claims of a 200+mph top speed from its 1500cc fuel injected V8 engine.
As far as I'm aware, this is the only bike that has survived but if any of you know of other bikes please leave a comment. This bike is owned by the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham UK has been on display as a non running exhibit for many years.
I have already worked on the bike last year getting the engine to run after a few rudimentary checks, new oil and batteries for series 12 of Henry Cole's "The Motorbike Show" where Henry rode it for a few miles up to around 50 mph, but it wasn't running very well and was leaking a lot of oil and coolant.
Episodes of "The Motorbike show" can be seen on itvx player on line and some shorter edits are available on Henrys TH-cam channel.
Over the coming months I will be stripping the bike to sort out a few issues with the V8 engine and hopefully make it run and ride how it was intended 25 years ago.
My fave channel. No stupid clickbait or loud music. Just the soft voice of Alan and the clock gently ticking in the background. Absolute bliss!
almost feels Utopian!
I totally agree!
You neglected to mention the most important thing... Hedgehogs 🙂
The perfect antidote to many of the YT automotive ‘personalities.’ If this bloke did a video about sweeping his driveway I’d probably end up watching it. Great stuff!
There’s an American who does just that. ;-)
No blowing smoke up any ones arse , however, I think that it’s wonderful that out of all the engineering companies and experts in the UK , Allen Millyard is the only choice when you want a prototype, one off , unreliable engine, rebuilt with reliability built in. Fantastic work, another masterclass , again.
Definitely the man's a Mechanical genius.
He's not a genius, he just pay attention to detail. Every part must be as good as he can do it so the result is at least as good as he wants to. Some call it perfectionism, others just call it normal work.
He’s incredible. My stepfather is the same with carburettors. Cool & calculated.
@@agafonovas Ooooooo - hark at you.....
Allen makes it look so obvious and easy. If only it was! He’s got hero status for me 👍
"So when I make my new exhaust system...."
Now that's music to everyone's ears. Thanks Allen.
He asked about that in the previous vid, EVERYONE pleaded with to make a new one because the old one was z total disgrace.
I think we all knew up front what he was going to do.
After all, this is Allen Millyard...
yes that ugly exhaust manifold that looks like an elephant foot edema needs replacement!
@@mausermann7918yeh, I had a laugh about that last weekend. As if there were any other option.
I wouldn't have put that old one on a lawnmower. The quality of the welding is making me twitch.
That was music to my ears.
It's like going to motorcycle church viewing these videos. Reverence for the mechanicals and they move onto a heavenly state.
Amen brother.
I have these Zen like moments watching Alan work it’s mechanical ballet plus what’s going on in the kitchen , Charlie having a large one and the hedge pigs is just the cherry on the top , I’m totally chilled by the end .
😁👍🏻🇬🇧🔭🦔
Praise the Omnissiah!
This is the best content on TH-cam. Hands down.
Plus, it's not just motorcycles and engineering... it's baking, wildlife, ASMR... it covers lots of content types.
Totally agree
100%
Yup gearhead cycle porn. 😂😎👍🍻
Thanks Allen. I know these videos take a lot of time to make and edit but we really appreciate your hard work. Looking forward to seeing more.
I'm still amazed how some people designed this bike to be so overcomplicated, yet took so little care in building it.
Employed a blind welder with parkinsons!
That is very disrespectful to blind welders!
Those exhaust manifolds!
@vonryansexpress the first CB 750 prototypes looked production ready other than very minor details, Japanes would never make even a protype that bad
@@marmax5272,My thoughts exactly.
“Back in the garage without a cupcake “ …tantamount to cruelty! Seriously, this is the only YT channel where I watch every new episode in one sitting, usually at breakfast due to the time difference. I love the precision.
Lol........that comment made me laugh to! 🤣
I’m a V8 car guy, haven’t ride a motorbike since I was 19,I’m 52 I love engineering and have some of these talents and skills I’ve learned over many years, but Allen channel is the only one I’ve watched everything, I really have. Allen’s skills are off the charts, he can rebuild /design a bespoke V8 as easy as I find replacing a spark plug. An irreplaceable man.
what bike did you ride back then?
the only channel i will sit through the hair care ads as a bald man
Lols😂 have Premium so don't see ads. Am I missing out?
Who doesn’t want ‘up to one hundred percent petal soft hair’?
I used to have forty-three percent yard-broom bristle coarse hair; the new Herbal Essences range is a bloody life-changing breakthrough in shampooing technology, let me tell you!
Hey firsteerr, do you watch 'Cutting Edge Engineering'?? Our Aussie genius? Recommended if you don't already.
Just get an add blocker
@@semajekrad6922 but then Allen doesn’t get paid…..
The only problem with Alan's great videos is that they come to an end......I wish they were 2 hr vids because I could watch him work all day. That clock ticking in the background is just so relaxing, and of course Charlie Weaver is a star in his own right.
'Back in the Garage without a cupcake' needs to be a T-Shirt!
Just what I needed after a full day of gardening......
its like he got sent to bed without supper :( lol
tshirt;gotta be 'well pleased with that' :)
In Japan Allen would have been designated a living legend years ago.
Who knows UK royals may wake up and ..
Sir Allen? Bout time...
Japan will give him the esteemed Katana sword of Valor with honorary certificate of Samuraihood
Recognition by 'UK royals ' (government) is a mere patsy to overrated celebrities and sportspersons far less talented and mundane than Mr. Allen M.
It is true, there is a truly zen quality to these videos: the ticktock of the clock, the soothing voice and brilliant engineering in the make: All you need to reset after a stressful day
That welding on the oil filter recess!
Many things makes it look like some sort of apprentice project!
No doubt an amateur welding job, and embarrassing compared to so much of the original design and fabrication. Another sloppy area was the crudeness of the head ports shown in an earlier segment.
@@loboheeler I can’t even weld,but l HAVE seen some !
@@loboheeler The winner has to be that exhaust manifold
Is horrifying. But wait until you weld aluminium.
When I was much younger, I was introduced to the concept of ‘ mechanical sympathy’.
Here is a gentleman who was actually born with this in mind - plus the innate ability to analyse and solve complex engineering problems single handed. Hats off to you Alan, this video is superb on many levels.
You're a National Treasure, Allen.
Seeing the ''AM 2024'' initials is so cool. History in the making.
As a retired millwright I’ve been watching all of your videos, and I love the way you reengineer components and your attention to detail. Keep up the great content.
Don't like football and ver 9 is ready to view. Happy days 👍🏼👍🏼
Sorry forgot to say a big thank you for the content. Can't wait to see the bike run.
Great to watch a true engineer at work explaining all the mods to make this engine reliable
You even try oil pump by hand and prime oil gallery - what a legend! You are truly awesome!
Was trawling through TH-cam looking for worthwhile content and perked up considerably when I saw this notification. What a lucky motorbike to have Allen poking around in it.
I hit the like button before watching ❤
Doesn't everyone?
@@skylershank9309
I certainly does 🤷🏼♂️
Yesssssss!
The ticking clock is a bonus 😂
It's a bot...
Loving this re- build, time to put the kettle on and enjoy another installment! Thanks Allen.
Thanks for posting Allen. I have only one complaint, it's not long enough to save me from TV hell this evening. Thank heavens I can watch the Shed & Buried re-runs later 😊
With this many adverts it's getting worst than tv
Bloody football
I was thinking the same, but then had the idea of watching in Firefox browser rather than the app. I'm pleased to report not a single add 👍
I know the TH-cam algorithm favors 12 to 20 minute videos, but I could watch these for hours!
Hit repeat.
I am Gobsmacked everytime I see the welding on that manifold, Still speechless now.
Won't be long now! Can't wait to see the new exhaust manifolds etc...
The originals were Trump. Allen will make _something,_ and whatever that _something_ ends up looking like, it would deserve submission to The Design Centre (if that still exists).
Wife away for weekend, great weather, afternoon on motorbike round Malverns, red wine and rare steak and ….. a Millyard video !!! Life is good 😊
Sounds perfect. Having a few glasses of red myself 👍🏻
Please do me the favour of inviting my wife next time. Just leave me with the dog.
Another lovely slice of Allen's engineering cake! 🙂
could watch Allen working all day
I love how a skilled practitioner can make a very complicated process look easy. Watching Allen work I'm tempted to think, "I could do that."
You could, if you think you could. That's what being human means.
Some of these components look hardly robust enough to handle all that power - but I am totally unqualified to judge, and Allen would have expressed any doubts. This is a brilliant series. Many thanks, Allen!
The subject, Alan’s measured delivery style and the ticking clock, make Alan’s workshop films very therapeutic. Keep up the awesome work.😊
The welding on the oil pan around the oil filter looks like grade school art class
7 seconds in & I'd already hit the like button because we all know the quality of Allan's videos are outstanding 👌
I hit like without even starting to watch because I known I’ll love it.
I'm with Charlie, getting excited to hear that thing run. Also a big fan of watching your disassembling and assembling using a minimal amount of power tools. Almost 'old school'.
I'm with you on this, just ordinary Allen keys😍
Drives me nuts when people pull out the impact driver to tighten a simple bolt.
You've got to have feel!
I'm old enough to take a drink when he does. And I do.
These videos are a historical document that shows just how shoddy the original was. Allen has made it what it should have been from day one.
When I was a school boy in the the UK I used to get so excited for the next episode of Grange Hill. I get the same feeling waiting for the next Allen vid.
It's so relaxing to watch, especially with the clock ticking in the background.
The compensation you receive for this project won't be enough. You sir are an artist.
Allen is an amazing engineer but his super power is his PATIENCE
We all have that. Yes, I know. *_BUT_*
Nicely made gear (I used to run a gear cutting shop)👍
These rebuild vids are very therapeutic and satisfying to watch😊
The welding on that manifold and crankcases are shocking
now we know why British Motor Corp folded..
"Back in the Garage... without a cupcake..." ... classic.
The master at work. Excellent!
Fabulous work as ever Allen. Can't wait to hear it running. Would have sounded nice in our grass track sidecar outfit when me and my mate were racing. 👍
The old clock or metronome was very hypnotic, quite relaxing, nearly bobbed off until bam the lathe kicked in 😊
I can’t wait to hear the Nemesis being taken out for a ride! Even the hedgehogs will be watching!
Your work stands by itself👍🏼 Can imagine what you have planned for the new exhaust system.
You can? Tell me.
I’ve never enjoyed a rebuild of a motorcycle engine so much, and this is no ordinary engine. As Alan has had to modify and re-machine so much of this engine makes you wonder what “clowns” built and assembled this bike in the first place. And there’s Alan just putting everything correct “as casual as you like” what a fantastic engineer Alan is👍👏👏
Clowns? Do you know what I involved in taking an engine from paper to reality? With all due respect, Allen absolutely couldn't do it, yet apparently those who did are idiots...
Allen, you do incredible things, with a zen attitude and really didactic explanations. In this case, you restore not only the body of a special motorcycle, but also its dignity... It has suffered a series of lazy workarounds, which you meticulously undo. It's a real pleasure to follow this.
Allen, what is going to happen with the Nemesis when you have finished it? Please don't say that after all your meticulous work it will just languish in a museum somewhere? lf it is, at least let something outstanding be done with it first, something that will go down in history! Along with your own youtubes of course!
Of course it's Zen.
@@evelynsutton4411 It's going to be ridden to try and break the world v8 motorcycle speed record at 150mph.

Allen makes everything so easy !, Super Job,
I have been trying to bore and stroke a 500 to 680 for So many years,
At 77 now, I think I have left it too late, Hoping watching Allen will give me the KICK I need,
But I wish he would dump that Clock !, My life is ticking away .
Lovely to meet you today at the Shelsley Walsh bike bonanza. The Flying Millyard going up the hill showed its torque.
Just got home had a great day and 210 mile round trip on the FM🙂
@@AllenMillyard my friend saw you riding there. I can't believe you did the round trip on it 😅😍
Your vast experience has given you a truly remarkable depth of knowledge. Things like fitting modified gixxer bearings, Honda oil pickups etc remind me of 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'; quality is making parts fit for the purpose. Norton could never have made as good an engine as what you're rebuilding.
The clock and the cupcakes. Take me very far back into memories.
Thank you Allen.
I'm beginning to imagine the start-up and first drive.
👍🏻👋🏻
Allen Millyard, you are the greatest geniuses of all time...
Absolutely fantastic. Compulsory viewing for any engineering student. Thank you very much Allen.
I love the sound of the clock ticking in the background, very comforting.
Absolutely the best company for washing the dishes.
I rate this video simply...it's just PERFECT! Good job Allen.👏👏👏
Of course it is.
This man is an absolute legend, his attention to detail is seriously outstanding and impressive, fantastic work. Credit to him, outstanding.
Allen must be the only person I know who doesn't own or use power tools. It is amazingly peaceful watching the leisurely but fastidious process.
Allen (genius) Millyard, I really do wish I had such a calm and mild mannered influence as a friend. Thank you Allen just for being you 🙏
Mechanical meditations chapter nine. This week ,
" The poet and the crankcase. "
Are you sitting comfortably?
Then I'll begin !
Brilliant , thank you !
So kind and humble considering the hatchet job Norton made on some of those parts ,its no wonder the British motorcycle industry collapsed!
It´s so soothing to hear Allen´s voice along with the clock in the background.
Two Sunday mornings in a row coffee in hand. Just perfect.
Hi Allen I am glad your making a new exhaust manifold. The original was made out of a Quality street tin. You are a true gent of engineering. A good honest guy. You have such a relaxed calm and confident manner
Honest? No. He is _definitely_ a naughty boy.
So pleased to see another instalment of the V8 so soon after the eighth, years ago I’ve rebuilt simple uncomplicated engines but when I watch Allen’s attention to detail I wonder how the ones I nailed together ever stayed reliable.
Everybody immediately sold off everything I did that was successful, *_long_* before there was time to work out how or why it was so successful. *That is LIFE.*
Watching Allen is meditation.
MASTERCLASS, a V8-Allan-Cupcakes= just perfect! Thanks Allan!
This man is a genius. My dad owned a light engineering factory, but what Allen does in his shed is fantastic.
I watch from start to finish and wonder where the time went ,absolutely fascinating ❤
time travel portal of engineering delights
I'm really pleased with that.🙂
Always an enjoyable Millyard post of...
Knowing where your going.
Where your gong be when you get there.
And where it's gong to leave everybody concerned.
" I don't like that, so I'll just make another one" . Brilliant !!!
Came for a motorbike engine rebuild, saw some woodworking, birds, hedgehogs, cupcakes & charley weaver. Disappointed there’s no cuppa though Allan 😂😂. Love the project so far & your meticulous attention to the details.
Alan’s skill and appeal is he makes very professional products with rudimentary tools in his garage.
These videos are never long enough. I could watch Allen's mechanical magic all day.
New Allen Millyard video just dropped! Yessss
Love the relaxed voice and the ticking clock, I could listen to this all day .
Each to their own, the constant tick tocking on the video really annoys me. 😄
One things for sure,I'll be glad to see the back of that nasty rear exhaust manifold, can't wait to see Allen's version.😊
Just a sheer pleasure to watch. The national treasure that is Allen Millyard.
A new episode from Allen drops on TH-cam, and it fits perfectly with the amount of free time I have. So I'm really pleased with that.
I am sitting in awe of the quiet skill. This is so relaxing and informative. Alan makes this job look so straightforward, when it would be an insoluble nightmare to us mortals.
Milly is the consummate gentleman talking about how this engine was originally. Class act!
Mesmerising watching this wizard at work. Been watching 2 or 3 at a time, very very enjoyable!
A joy to watch... didn't know you could hand crank the oil pump as a check, so thanks for that tip.
Just beautifully simple genius work Alex. It's like watching Mozart write an opera.... you're amazing. Cheers
Allen Millyard has mastered the skill of reusing a tube of Permatex Ultra Grey. BRAVO!
We’re just very privileged to be along for the ride of the ‘project’ we never want to end! Sublime 👍🏻👍🏻
Such a peaceful way to spend 20 minutes this afternoon. Thanks Mr. M!!
A sump-tuous presentation. But missing a cupcake. 😞 as per usual, thank you. I always go here first when the announcement comes. Pavlov would be proud. So would Skinner. See you nex round.
Another moment of deep relaxation. I’m learning to weld as a retirement project and after seeing some of that welding don’t feel quite so bad about the look of some of my welds! Interesting use of the bevel/ straight cut gearing combination even allowing for the prototype nature of the Nemesis! AM 2024 the stamp of ‘Just perfect’
I loved the oil pump bench test.
I would now own a Nemisis after Allen is really please with it. I always use locktight thread locker, and even though some would disagree, I even use it on dry clean second hand conrod bolts, which I started doing because I couldn't get new bolts and could tell the torque reading wasn't accurate feeling that one or two of the bolts may have lost its temper and was slightly more stretchy than normal, its so therapeutic to see you work Allen, and being even more thorough than I heh heh, thank you kindly for sharing your great experience and experiments Allen.
Thanks again Allan for sharing your undoubtedly proven methods with us. This is the real yardstick, If it's good for A.M. it's good for us all!
Best channel on TH-cam ever.
He creates amazing thing using very basic tools, his mind is legendary.
