I appreciate that in your skin tone chart you included the darkest skin tone you could possibly get with what you have. Bravo for representing everyone!
Zoe Hong Well yes there is no point when you have a video already on the subject . I have been looking for the video on color theory and as of yet haven't found it so took a detours to this one . I have had big problems to get a proper shin tone . My model was Leyendecker. illustration of clothing advertisements . Brown pink . mixed blue red and black got no where Yellow ocra of course . just couldn't get it work. . White . I had to use white . a ton of white a dot of black several dots of red and a yellow . I tried them all except Naples yellow That's your recommendation . I will get some I didn't know the name but I will look for it
I hate ink. I've tried them all . well two brands. Airbrush ink . Uou name it Alls I ever got with ink was ink covered hands aND spilled bottles over my work ACRYLIC EVEN WATERCOLOR WORKS GOOD IN A STEEL QUILL PEN.
Girl...you rock ! Greetings from Miami, I am a fashion designer in the stylist business now but I still doing my pieces and all this tricks are plain GOLD. !!! Thank you for your time and your patience to do this tutorials. This take me back to school...the good part of it ! - JR MARTINEZ ( you are super funny ) !
Hey! Thanks for sharing your experiences with me! My favorite part of teaching face to face in a classroom is watching the evolution and growth in a student's progress. Keep playing, keep practicing, and don't forget to have fun!
Zoe Hong 0. Yea the marker probadly has to dry over several days or weeks then it would be water proof I have had problems with gell pen ink . it takes weeks for it to dry good enough to not bleed if the painting is drenched
As a boy who wears make up, thank you for including me. ;) I would so take your class omg. You're so amazing. I'm so obsessed. Why don't you have more subscribers?!?! You all need to subscribe to Zoe! She is LEGIT. As for ink suggestion, I hear Dr. Ph Martin's bombay inks are, well, bomb.
I love it when boys wear makeup! I've also had a few students who do full drag and they'll show me pics in class. I had 2 in class once explaining their tucking methods of choice. OMG hilarious. And painful-sounding. Thanks for all your sweet words! I have no idea why I don't have more subscribers. Maybe because I'm good at teaching but bad at marketing myself? Hahaha Share my links, yo! I've seen the Martin's stuff at stores--maybe it's time to check them out.
Your "learn something new everyday" moment made me love you even more, Zoe. XD I have similar moments when I'm shocked, but I'm usually speechless and stuck on one word when that happens. You actually kept it together pretty well, haha.
I love your style of teaching I learn so much in just one hour!!! I am going to have to watch a second or third time to get all of it. I have watched similar topics from other TH-camr's and didn't get the same picture. You rock!!! Thank you!!! Spice
I love your style ,direct to the point no bs. I am so tired of the posers who say they will teach me something but all I see is them painting playing with their hair and giving a hard sell for the same ol thing thats all over the net. Thank you for being real .Thank you for teaching me how to make skin colors better.
I think cocoa bean on dark brown is too warm pink for the kind of ashy/muted yellow tone of dark brown, washes it out. however, the one you said was too green I feel if paired with a dark yellow brown, like a richer prismacolor dark brown, would be a nice Philippino skin tone or for similar Pacific islander skin looks :) great video, enjoyable, informative, to the point and the demonstrations are just so excellent because they're so detailed and you were really unlazy where a lot of people would demonstrate one sort of combination and talk the rest, you showed them all in their own right and that has immense learning value so thank you! great stuff
love this video...but I love all of your videos my fashion designs have improved dramatically due to your videos and practicing. Thanks Zoe you rock!!!
You are a great artist and teacher. I am an artist too, but it is always good to see how other artist create. Your explanations are wonderful. You are one of my best teachers seen on you tube.
OMG!!!!! I just discovered your channel yesterday when I was trying to use my Derwent for the first time, YOU SAVED MY LIFE! Such an amazing tutorial! I'm starting fashion School in September and guess what? I don't know almost nothing, but this will not stop me and you'll be my best friend from today, I'll watch and all your tutorials and when the classes start Ill not fell like a stupid! Also, I love how you explain things, so direct and with so much passion! Keep going Girl! YOU GIVE ME LIFE!
Gorgeous skin tones! I had been looking for a watercolor skin tone tutorial for a while now. Thank goodness I came across this, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
I'm colorblind so I need help to either mix skin tones or verify that the skin isn't orange or green. I needed to order the browns to make myself a skin tone palette, can't wait for them to come in the mail. Definitely gonna come back to this video to help me make the palette.
I found a really good combo for darker skin tones. If you use 2 layers of the prisma walnut and shadow with a copic walnut you get a beautiful melanin Naomi Campbell brown lol. The copic walnut with the prisma cocoa bean is nice too.
about the darker skin tones you can use more ultramarine blue with dark umber it can be really dark even black besides using black I don't really use black for darker values
Zoe Hong letting you know that I like your vids you just got subbed be checking you out soon I am working on a figurative collection can use some of your tips in fashion I like your style
Im so late but i am so happy im here cause i've been looking for a skin tutorial for a darker to darkest skin tone cause most of tutorials that i found only have a light to tanned skintone. I always draw dark tones for my characters on digital art and im so sad that i cant do that on watercolor so i am so happy that i found this. Thank you so much xx.
Lol love that reaction. Yes they are supposed to bleed. Until dry. You can smudge as well. And used on top of gesso you can pretty much paint with it. Love these Pitt markers and brush markers from Fabre castell
Another good way to blend coloured pencil is with odourless mineral spirits, paint thinner or a colourless alcohol marker. Some peeps like baby oil and similar things but I don't like what it does to the paper. OMS or clear markers dry fast and you can layer more colours on top as it removes wax bloom. A skin tone in Prismacolor I like for shadows is Henna (or Caput Mortum in Faber castel polychromos is you're fancy 😜) cheers! Thanks for all your info this was a fabulous video.
Oh yeah, I've shown the rubbing alcohol with a q-tip trick in another video but I should have shown it here too. I'll try the clear marker thing. I actually love the FC Polychromos but I didn't find anything good for skin when I was prepping for this video. Must remedy that. Thanks for all *your* info!
Thank you, Zoe. Great info and I appreciate the variety of media you used. I went and checked the info on the PITT pens. They are India ink, so they would work a little like the Higgins Ink, add water to dilute. The info said it is waterproof when completely dry.I don't know how long that takes. I read customer reviews that basically said the same. You can also smudge them if you do it immediately. Multi media artists like them because they are waterproof/water resistant on various surfaces.
Another option for pale skintone is almond milk and brick white for the shadows. I found brick white randomly at the store yesterday. The only thing is that with this option she looks REALLY pale.
Omg you're totally the teacher that when a student asks a question you'd say "check the syllabus" or "Sorry, but if you came to class Monday you would know--I'm not going to repeat myself." 😂
Hi Zoe your videos are very informative and helpful. But i do not have access to these brands. Can you explain with simple Camlin poster colours or water colours
HI Zoe, love all your vids. Have you tried Liquitex Acrylic Ink? Perhaps another art supply for you to add to your collection? 😋They're nice too, more opaque than the brand you are using on camera (but I haven't used them myself).

Was the Winsor and Newton (spelling?) marker water based? Because I think because the main base of the marker is water and you add water to it, it dilutes and spreads the color. It didn't work with the copics because they're alcohol based, so if you used rubbing alcohol then it would spread. Also, amazingly informative video. Thanks, ~Jolie

In the UK Winsor Newton and Copic are the same company. I was in a art supply shop and inquiring about copic and the owner explained the above but also complained copic orders had to go on dedicated copic order forms.
actually I use copic E51and E53 it's amazing Zoe if you ask me search this idea in instagram royaa.heydarian or mahsa.alamir they are great in drawing skin tone Im from Iran and our teachers completely have special way for drawing
Intrigued by this endorsement! Any further details/explanation of what makes them so awe-inspiring? I put a couple of colors on my birthday wishlist. haha~
It is SUPER pigmented (to the point where it bleeds through most thin paper), doesn't fade (great for archival work), and the amount they give you for the price lasts damn near forever (I do mostly calligraphy so I'm not using a lot of ink per session, but for art will probably go through it faster). Some of their inks are also 'bulletproof' which is their term for water and bleach proof ink that's also safe in fountain pens

Yes, and in polyethnic countries like the US or UK, if the company chooses only white models, they're signaling that their clothes are for white people, only white people can afford them, only white people fit their aesthetic. In other words, racist, and quite frankly, stupid to miss out on those profits from people who aren't white.
You will see, however, there are Black owned businesses that uses only Black models (for example) because they are such a neglected demographic they had to create something specially for themselves. And some countries, like Japan, their companies use only Japanese models because their whole country is so monoethnic.

I said it was a watercolour marker...
You should work with some make up brands to make foundation for all skin tones
I am looking for the skin times but they are bad your times are very good👍☺
:D
thank you soo much for this!
hi zoe, can you please share the names of the gouache paints you used to mix skintones?
I wrote them out in the video. They should show up on the screen.
A tutorial on High Heels or Shoes in general?
It's in the queue and should come out early winter.
Pitt markers are waterproof once is dry and cure
