Goodbye Maruti Suzuki S-Cross | Underrated Crossover Now A Used Car Bargain!

  • The Toyota-Suzuki partnership has moved beyond rebadging and mild cosmetic tweaks. It has now brought us the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. With the arrival of the latter, Maruti Suzuki now has a new flagship car and its introduction will coincide with the discontinuation of the S-Cross.
The S-Cross was Maruti’s first real attempt at the SUV/Crossover space, since the original Grand Vitara was launched. While it got the car fundamentals right, its polarizing design, hatchback like stance and eventually outdated features-list made it one of the less successful models from the Maruti Suzuki stable.
This car will live on as the TECT platform continues to underpin the Brezza as well as the Grand Vitara. In this video, we take a look at what the S-Cross could’ve done to be better received and why it deserved to sell better.

I'm a proud owner of an scross from 2016. Have done more than 1.2 lakhs km. I moved from fiat linea to maruti only in pursuit of peace of mind. But trust me I have enjoyed driving every moment of this car against my expectations. I have done ladakh, gone to various remote places in himachal uttarakhand and where not. It feels rock solid everywhere. The ride and handling is just superb. It feels tough not feeble like brezza. Body roll is so well contained and it never makes you feel tired. On top of it it's top notch mileage figures and low maintenance cost gives that much satisfaction as an owner. Only downside is 1.3 diesel. Had i known before about the handling capabilities of this car i would have gone with 1.6 that's the only regret. Nevertheless if anytime maruti bring this gem back in new avatar I will definitely buy it without a thought. Thanks for this video 👍

I own a 2018 FL Alpha and I have never looked back since the day I took a TD. It made a lot of sense to buy it over the then Capture, Creta, Brezza, and Nexon. The practicality and features it offered for it's price was actually unmatched. Shame that it never got the due appreciation it deserved. But I personally felt it was an injustice to not offer a more powerful engine to the otherwise a brilliant well balanced Maruti product.

I suggested this to my mother-in-law for the very reason you suggested at the end - easier maneuvering ability and not too many features. A chauffer driven car with not too many bills and whistles and a price below a venue and not a Creta.

Own an S-Cross from the past 1.5 years. Bought it once it had transitioned to petrol since our only requirement was an automatic transmission, it made a lot of sense at the price it was at, it was not much more expensive than the Vitara Brezza in 2020, and it had quite a lot more space considering it was more than 4 meters in length, boot space and all was also deeper and easier to access.
Since the Taigun and Kushaq had not been launched yet and we needed a car, we went with it and have never looked back. I have driven a creta and seltos (gt line) and out of those 3, this was a definite win for me. Less body roll, easy to take around town considering the dimensions and the cherry on the cake was the pricing, automatic model with similar features was still costing us 3-4 lakhs less, obviously with some features missing though. The only con, which was a kind of deterrent for us was the 4 speed automatic transmission, but since we didn't have a whole lot of highway use for it, it holds up fine.
We especially did not care about the features in Creta and Seltos, wireless charging and all has no use for us, we wanted a reliable family car above all, which we can easily keep for the next 10-15 years with minimal maintainance as we shift to electric cars soon. In fact the only reason we did not go for an electric car was the range considering we do take long trips, albeit not often but still from time to time and the infrastructure and support is not there where it cannot be the only vehicle in your garage considering some charging stations dont work at times and all those other teething problems.
My only wish was if they had brought the 320 DDiS with an automatic, damn that's the dream man. Amazing mileage, power and ease of use all packed into one, but as they say, nothing can be perfect, the pricing wouldn't have been amazing for sure then.
Sorry, this was a long one, hopefully worth the read though.
TLDR; Own an S cross petrol automatic from the past 1.5 years and loving it

The SCross is the best of both worlds. The handling, though not equal, does come close to the Figo's and the ride quality is way ahead of it.
So it's a great package. Had a great time with the Figo for 7yrs and loving the SCross now for the past 1 year.

As a car I get all necessary features with safety, and as design it looks quiet uniform and sleek when compared to creta or seltos. Most spacious, practical, well built, and slightly premium interiors compared to all other maruti cars till date. Ride quality, all 4 disc brakes, huge legroom, big boot were the highlights. Been driving cars in India and internationally now for over 50 years. Have driven many brands like VW, M&M, and Tata before venturing onto Maruti S in India.
Was sceptical before buying SX4 in 2008 but was so happy with it that I did not leave the car for 14 years. The less said about the other brands mentioned, the better.....had a tough time with the cars and their servicing. With SX4 it was really smooth sailing. Since 2021 I have been driving a SCross petrol automatic and I love the car. It is great in the city and on highways and expressways. Being a law abiding driver this car suits my driving goals which doesn't include breaking records or burning rubber. I love the SCross and it is such a pity that it didn't sell well. The slopy design is what that gives this car a very easy to drive and visibility benefit. Boxy designs make the cabin occupy most of the vision of sight there by reduction in visibility of outside area. But yes, there were some bugs that were needed to be corrected. Scross is one of the great products which we had in the Indian Car Market. I am a proud owner of Scross petrol and we have 1.3 diesel Scross as well (both facelift models). I can say in India people don't understand the aerodynamic body and its advantages. They are more lene towards a boxy/traditional SUV design. Scross is a typical European design vehicle and counts under one of their successful vehicles. This car gets all boxes checked when it comes on the design, ground clearance, comfort and features which are practical. And most importantly the price tag in which this was offered. Sunroofs are not at all useful in India. This feature was introduced in the European car market where the weather is always pleasant and has no/less polution/dust. In Indian weather it is not all practical and just a feature without much/no use. And this adds an extra price to the tag which only benefits car manufacturers. Indian car market is way different than the rest of the world where we only value the thing which doesn't have much value in the rest of the world. The Grand vitara model launched in India is nothing but the Scross facelift model which got launched last year in Europe. Maruti added trending features in that car and renamed it to a different name. And yes now this car is priced at par with Maruti's competitors. I am sure now Maruti will have significant Sale with added features and the price tag in which this car is been offered. Vehicle price matters in our society.
The original Grand vitara product from Suzuki is not available in India at this time. They launched that a decade back but that also failed in the Indian car market.
Anyways I am very happy with my decision and no regrets after Scross has been discontinued.

I got a 1.6 Zeta in 2017 for 10.90 L after a dealer discount of 2.5 L. It is an amazing riding and handling car, plus very spacious and comfortable, and I am going to have a tough time replacing it with something that is comparable in performance and dynamic ability without breaking the bank.

I got it in 2015 just months after it was out and still loving it.. It was after test driving creta and ecosport.. Still I got it right. Creta was not at all refined at what time.. I was moving from getz a hyundai car. Plus creta was having a 6months wait time at that time . Definitely not worth it then. I drove a 2018 creta in 2020 and still can't beat my scross.
Space n comfort I would say better than creta some features were missing gues you learn to love living without it like rear ac vent, would miss it on the road.

I own 2016 1.3MJD Zeta... with no complaints whatsoever... fantastic ride/handling with frugal Engine (20+ kmpl) qnd decently equipped made it a fantastic choice for me... S cross has a best metal used compared to entire suzuki line up which made it the safest suzuki car that time..
It was just a lame design that caused bad numbers on the sales charts... Good Video...

I own 1.5 since about an year and still believe strongly that's it's a way good product compare to Breza or any other sub 4 segment CSUVs...
The amount of space you feel inside this isn't like any hatchback. All CSUVs though try to look lie an SUV but space wise they feel like a hatchback..
And the price point at which it was coming, is a steal.. Just for minimal extra price, we got a much better product compared to CSUV.
The upgraded looks of Scross clearly made the head turns.
I found the drive quality better then Skoda Rapid while deciding the car. The suspension were much better.
Also, we get all 4 disc brakes. Have drove it to the hills twice and only thing I wished was a bit more engine power. Above 2k rpms it gives a punch and mid range is good.
I wish they would have come up with vetilated seats, one feature which we Indians recently came across and found it no nonsense feeature..
In driving dynamics, I don't think the hyrider or new grand vitara mild hybrid version will be much different, only addons you will get is few additional features and new look..
Fun note, one of my friend who owns i10 sat in another friends ecosport and happily said, isse jada space to meri car mein hai :)
    That's the problem with CSUVs

Crossovers are not a hot market right now. i20 Active was a non-seller, but atleast it was based of the hot-selling and still relevant Elite i20. However, the S-Cross was based off the ancient SX4 (how many current generation people remembers that!). Finally, the updated S-Cross was too expensive compared to its competitors, that too with much lesser equipment and features. S-Cross definitely wasn't going anywhere.
Having said that, it is interesting to see what happens to the Baleno Cross that will launch next year.

i20 active, Fiat Punto cross and Etios cross are way smaller than Scross. They were based out of smaller Hatch backs. But Scross was based on SX4 which is a c class sedan. So it's much better and safer than those hatch based crossover.

In late 2020, after shortlisting, I came down to either of the 2. Tata Nexon or the S-cross. While the top model of S-cross was 1.2Lakh more than the Nexon, it was giving me a bigger car. But at that time Nexon just started to be popular in market after its BS6 update and I felt it safer to with it as it also had more features inside with a more powerful engine. I don't regret the decision after watching Nexon to be in so much demand these days and S-cross getting discontinued.

proud owner of s-cross 2021 Zeta AT, the previous version was an eye-sore, post facelift it charms by its looks. Chose it over creta and seltos for the exact reasons you mentioned, never ever regretted my decision. Just a no-nonsense vehicle, so far so good. Be it the city lanes or the long drives on highways, it never disappoints.

Why Scross is a better car ?
    1) More than 4meters, not a compact SUV.
    2) More cabin space than its rivals, ample rear sitting space.
    3) 1.5 L engine, superb performance.
    4) 4 Disc breaks.
    5) Very good mileage with under 12L range.
    5) All 4 alloys, 4 NCAP rating.
    6) Hybrid feature really saves fuel.
    7) No blind spot near window.
    8) No engine noise inside the car.
    9) Superb pickup in Manual variant.
    10) Speaker are top class! 4+4 speakers and tweeters.
I own a SCross Zeta Petrol Manual from Pune , for 11.50 L.
Have test driven all compact SuVs in this range.
If you are not a big fan of classy interiors and rely more on driving performance, then go for Scross!
    Cheers.
