Strangely enough, the haunted mansion levels in Mario games aren't the scariest to me, at most I might be startled by an unexpected twist or something similar for a few moments and then I'll shrug it off quickly. So what does startle me? I've nicknamed them chaser levels, basically any level where you're being chased by something, whether it be rising lava, poison gas clouds, or something else. For whatever reason I can't handle being chased by something, no matter what thing it is, whenever I come across a level with that kind of thing, I'll chicken out and ask a friend for help on it, and I can't even seem to handle watching someone else play them. And if I'm caught off guard by one, I'll quite literally panic in reaction to it. (Little jab at myself with this, funniest reaction has to be when I went into Super Mario 3D World's 6-7, Fuzzy Time Mine, blind and not knowing what to expect. Went in thinking it'd just be a normal auto scroller, only to be absolutely terrified to realize I was being chased by a cloud made up of a bunch of black puffballs lol)
The spooky music from Super Mario 64 is one of the creepiest soundtracks I've ever heard. Rule the World from TheFatRat & AleXa (Korean: 알렉사) and Legends never die from League of Legends (Remix with Alan Walker as well as Original only with Chrissy) for example are two of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. You should also listen to this songs. They are so beautiful !

I'm surprised that World 4-4 from Mario 3D Land wasn't mentioned because of the ghost girl at the end of the level and it appears behind the fence and it will appear and disappear. I totally agree on Big Boos Haunt. When I was younger and I love Super Mario 64, I discovered the courtyard and Big Boos Haunt. I got nightmares from it and now it brings me lots of nostalgia. Btw I love your videos keep it up! 👍
I remember for the first time on Banshee Boardwalk, I thought something was gonna jumpscare me out of nowhere.
Yoshis Crafted World is the only level where I'm really scared. Big Boo's Haunt is my favorite course from Mario 64.
Honestly i like haunted themed levels they have really deep and special looking over the other levels and i feel like i want a whole game about these levels and no luigi's mansion doesnt count

Bouldergheist is one of the scary looking bosses I have ever seen in a game. Just thinking about it gives me the creeps.
The Piano, the Boos, and even Mister I in Big Boo’s Haunt? Aye Yai Yai. Couple that with the music and atmosphere and you know that you did something right to make me scream like a little girl. LOL.
The skybox of Ghostly Galaxy's Boulderguist looks like the Ghost at the end (or in some levels also at the start through a window) or one ghost of any 3D Land Ghost House level!

There’s also another Van Gogh art style level in the Mario franchise. In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, in the 2nd to last level before Baby Bowser’s Castle called Keep Moving, there’s a section where in the background, there are elements of the Starry Night painting. The whole game’s art style a painting or coloring book.

1. CALLED IT! I remember when I first played this game and I initially entered this level. Oh I was a teen when I played this game. That music DID freak me out and I'll be honest, after my Super Mario World experience, I was NOT looking forward to this world. Boy could I not be more wrong. This was not only my fav Haunted Mario Level, NOT ONLY my fav Mario 64 level, BUT it's still to this day my fav Mario level of all time. I LOVE IT that much! I've played almost EVERY major Mario game, including Odyssey, but this one is my fav and it's one of the biggest reasons why M64 is my fav Mario game. I can't tell you how happy I was to see that Boos could be defeated lol.

Wet dry world, it seems that is is flooded, it is Mario 64 too, it seems like there was random blocks and an underground city that surprisingly has fine texture.

Might I add that the ominous xylophone theme that plays for Banshee Boardwalk makes it creepier... and when you realize it's the game's real Rainbow Road
Also, Painted Swampland isn't the only level in the game with that style. 9-5, Spinning Platforms of Doom, has this style too.
And yes, Forever Forest creeped me out a bit when I first played it earlier this year. The music, sense of loss, creepy flowers, atmosphere, those stupid Piranha Plants, and the feeling you could choose the wrong path and have to start over all contribute to that...
…but the scariest thing is a Blue Shell on the final lap of Rainbow Road in Mario Kart Wii when you need 1st to beat your brother and win the GP
i like how like the first two thirds are supposed to just be like a quick halloween spook, while the last third of the entries are stupposed to be straight-up scary.
I'm happy that big boos haunt was number 1.thats probably the darkest Mario level, at least in a mainline game.
I personally thought that The Underwhere from Super Paper Mario would be here at one point you have to go in the River Styx to save Luigi all while disembodied skull hands follow you then later its extremely dark unless bowser lights the candles while again those hands follow you that level is terrifying and I had to play it because I bought the game for nostalgic purposes

The main issue of the clown is THE SOUND IT MAKES! When he first chases you, he starts to scream his lungs out and everytime is a jumpscare because you can't see him. I lost lives so many times during that level because of him, I hated it! 😆 SM64 Haunted House wasn't that bad, but probably I would have been scared too, if I played it during my childhood. 👍
That was traumatizing. I don't think I'll recover from that.
