    Awesome tips here John. Paying your cards off before the statement date rather than just before the due date is a MASSIVELY underutilized tip that I try to preach on my channel as well. I try to keep my utilization at 1-2% and achieve that by paying off 98-99% of my balances right before my STATEMENT CLOSE date rather than my due date. Great stuff man!

    • @allygarska
      @allygarska 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      How can one be able to identify the Statement Close Date rather than the Due Date? LMK when you’re most free, brother. Following your channel as well. Thanks for what you do. Much love, fam.

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@allygarska A lot of times, the statement close date can be tracked through your lenders app. If it doesn't directly give you the statement close date, you can see the start and end of your billing cycles on one of your statements and that end date would be your statement date. Hi John, thanks for the tips, I do have a question for the last tip
    If you reapply for the same card again to get their bonus again
    What happens to the card your already have?
    Do you have two Chase sapphire cards then?
    What would you do with it? Keep both? Does it combined to one card ?
    Do you cancel the one you already have?
    If you can answer these questions, it would be much appreciate, thank you!

    For the last tip you shared, can we apply for the same card again while having that card? Is that what you meant?
    Or we would have to close that card and then reopen it?

      Affan - great question and typically i would say no, very few cards let you have the card and apply again for the bonus. That was unfortunately during the hey day of credit card churning. Nowadays you have to close or product change the card you have. Best of luck and see you around!

When I applied and things begun to seem in limbo, I called my personal bank representative (my primary bank gives everyone one person and it's absolutely fabulous!) and he, knowing my accounts, recommended me dropping the application and requesting a loan on the count of lower interest rate. All I needed to do, was to explain, that I need card with high enough limit for blockations, when renting a car on business trips and my card's in my wallet.

      Hey Martin! Thanks for the sub and to answer you question it comes down to 2 things - do you want to optimize for your spend category or do you want to optimize for a certain type of currency. In the first case of optimize for spend I would use my Amex Gold for Grocery and Dining, Amex Plat for Airfare, CSR for Travel, and C1VX for all other. In the second case maybe I only strongly prefer Chase UR because they transfer to Hyatt so then I might use it for Airfare to earn 3x even thought the Amex Plat would earn me 5X. Hope that helps somewhat!

    Can a husband and wife apply for the same card separately and both claim the welcome bonus effectively doubling the household's welcome bonus? Or do credit cards have measures to prevent these things? Along those same lines, can a husband refer his wife to a credit card and gain the referral bonus? Or is it something where the person referred has to live at another address?

I guess it just pushes my interest out further and I don’t end up getting charged as I pay down what would be the charges that should incur interest. Does that make sense? • @eyeyamjstn628
      @eyeyamjstn628 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is no point in reducing apr (apy is for checking accounts) you won’t be paying them anyway, however if you need a card for emergencies then get one of those no rewards cards with super low rates.

    • @johnsfinancetips
      @johnsfinancetips  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question Keanu - however I would strongly encourage you to pay on time and in full so you don’t need to worry about APR. In fact if you’re having credit card trouble I’d focus on getting that debt managed - 0% balance transfer cards are an option thought double check the transfer feee. Once that’s in control then you can get back to the fun cards. Hope that helps, sorry i don’t have a good answer. See you around!

    Can I close capital venture and apply next year to take advantage of the sign up bonus? Perhaps next year with the Venture X?
    What are the limitations behind doing this? or they’ll simply block you from applying at some point…

      Jeff - happy to help. Find the card you want to get, then go to the terms and condition and see if there is language that says what the limits are for the bonus. Usually you can’t be holding the same card you want the bonus for. Best of luck and see you around!

    when you say to reapply after 48 months for the same card to get another bonus, what exactly is that process like? Do you close the original card first? Would you close the original card maybe after 1 year and then reapply? Can you explain that process, please?

    • @ianwalton403
      @ianwalton403 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You can usually product change your card to a different card in the same family and then reapply for the original card. This way your account doesn’t close and you keep your history associated with that card.

    • @theonlybuster
      @theonlybuster 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The steps are going to vary from one issuer to the next, but generally speaking you ask the card issuer to change the card to another card (usually a lower tier card). After 3-4 years you can usually re-apply for that original card AND qualify for the current sign-up bonus. If they don't allow you to change tier cards, you can close the account (though think long and hard before doing so) and 3-4 years later re-apply for the sign up bonus.
      Again, this isn't a guarantee and not all credit card issuers operate the same. So definitely check the terms and policies before attempting this.
      Remember that a slight drop in your score is only a big deal if you're looking to apply for a loan or credit card in the very immediate future. Short of that, give it a few months and you'll climb back up. Just plan ahead and you should be fine.

    • @lebisque9194
      @lebisque9194 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The banks typically will push that payment through before closing the statement. I’ve done it several times. However, I usually pay in full on due date and catch any pending payments that have posted after due date before the statement date. I also stop using my card between due date and statement date so my card issuer reports a very low or zero balance to my credit. I use a different card during that time, rinse and repeat.

    Hi, Thanks for your video! Your best two tips are: Pay on time, and pay in full. Totally agree!
    I just came across your channel, so perhaps you discuss this in another video, but here is my question: If/when we open a cc account for the bonus, spend the necessary $1K-$4K in the 90 days (to qualify for the bonus), but then have no further need of that credit card - how long should we wait before closing the account? We have a number of long term cards that we use regularly (for bonuses on different categories), so is there any benefit to holding this new card open for a year before closing it, or is it just as fine to close right after receiving the bonus? Thanks.

      Having a card, even if seldom used, increases your utilization score. Just buy a tank of gas or a gumball every year, so they don't close your card for inactivity.

    • @johnsfinancetips
      @johnsfinancetips  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the question! So I’m going to hit you with a it depends. When I was heavy in the credit card game and opening 12 cards a year for non-Amex card I would close in 90 - 120 days. For Amex card I closed at month 13 because they have a tendency to claw back. But if you have only a few cards and these cards are adding a lot to your credit line you may want to think about it again. But honestly I wouldn’t think twice about closing once it has served it’s purpose of getting me my points. Best of luck!

    Got the freedom student card back in March 2020, they kept emailing me. I banked with chase all my life but, I was about to graduate so I didn’t think it would be smart. Anyways I got it and I’ve been learning how to build my credit through lots of TH-cam since then. I was going to close it since I got the welcome bonus and wanted the regular freedom and it was only a short credit history anyways so wouldn’t have much impact. Recently, (nov 2022) I tried to use a friend’s referral to grab the intro bonus on the regular freedom card and they denied me. When the explanation letter came in the mail it said I already had the card type and I was super confused but, they also sent a new regular freedom card. Upon checking my chase app they changed mine from the freedom student to regular freedom so I missed out on the bonus. I’m still technically a student so I secure messaged them yesterday to see if there was anything they could do to let me get a bonus offer or at least some points. Wish me luck! 😮‍💨

      you can keep your credit constantly frozen. then when you anticipate that it will be pulled, create a temporary lift (or unfreeze) for a span of time of your choosing. for example, at the car dealership, when they ask to check my credit, i would use a phone/tablet to get to the credit agency they will look at, set a lift starting today and end the lift tomorrow. that credit agency will then open it up immediately and automatically freeze it back up tomorrow. you don't have to go back to re-freeze it with a temporary lift.

    I’m 30 and have an 800+ score. I’ve been researching and think I want to start building points for travel through several banks. I’m thinking of the chase trifecta, Amex Gold and the capital 1 venture X. I’m wondering what your suggested order of operations would be and if you would add or substitute anything. I know chase has the 5/24, so probably work through those first, but otherwise, do you have any thoughts? For context, I’ve had the Costco citi card for years, which has been fine, but I want to start maximizing credit benefits.

      CSP is always a good card to start with in my opinion, amex gold with that 90k offer is great as well. For that higher tier card venture x pays for itself in value, BUT isnt the best if you book directly with airlines(same for CSR), i would look at hotel cards too if you travel as some will come with free nights/status

      @@Tony36847 what?! Are you secretly working for AMEX? For the Venture X’s annual $300 travel credit, there are no hoops to jump through. You charge it on something “travel” related and they give you the credit. With AMEX you have to enroll for every benefit, select the airline, only one airline, to use the airline credit, you have book through their website for every benefit to include the hotel credit. Very tedious and annoying process. I don’t know how you’re having a hard time using the Venture X, but that’s insane.

    Question, I recently tried to apply to the AMEX Gold CC it said I wasn't eligible for the welcome bonus. Due to multiple potential reasons. Credit card open/close rates. Last one I opened was about 11 months ago. However I do have about 9ish cards. Do you know what I can do to get around this? Pay in full each month.

    Hi John! Thanks for all your advices 👍🏼
    To get the signup bonus every 2 years with BOA Alaska airline card should i cancel the card after two year and apply straight for the same or one ?
    Or i just need to contact them and asking them to get again the signup bonus?

      Would also like to know how people go about this. I assume with Chase you're just downgrading the card and then waiting the 4 years but is that the same across the board?

    • @papashowstoppa
      @papashowstoppa ปีที่แล้ว

      He’s saying you would keep the same card/account but call the company as if you wanted to close the card and get their retention offer. The company would apply the bonus as if it were a new card. wouldn’t want to close a two year card and lose the age of the card.

    Thank you for the tips! For your last hack, would I reapply for a chase sapphire 24-48 months after originally opening up an account? Or am I reapplying 24-48 months after closing/downgrading my original sapphire card?

    • @chrisp7110

      I spoke with a Chase Banker so if i recall it is when you last got the bonus but you can only have one card so you need to downgrade or close the account in order to apply for a new bonus but I recall Chase has been more strict since the pandemic because people are not long term customers so you will need to keep it open for atleast 2-3 years before closing/downgrading.

    I also do not understand why you get dinged for a high credit utilization rate. For me, as long as you are able to pay even the minimum, they should not penalize you because after all, it is helping these credit card companies.

      It just shows risk that’s all. At the end of the day credit cards are unsecured loans, the more you use the more you “borrow” and that is inherently risky for a bank 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Depends on your personality. If you think it will help you to stay motivated by paying off a card quickly, go with the smallest balance. But if you think you can stay motivated, you'll save more money by paying off the cards with the highest rates first. The two ways are identical on your credit report.
