  • The hottest topic in boating today is electric propulsion, and right now the Herley 3400 is perhaps the most luxurious yet practical electric boat in New Zealand. We had to travel to Tauranga to take her for a spin - it was definitely worth the journey.

    When you look at the roof of the boat it is very easy to see they know absolutely nothing about solar panels. But apart from that it is a nice boat. I like the idea of electric motors backed up by a small diesel generator for long cruising. And that part they did very well.

    • @JustinHEMI05
      @JustinHEMI05 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Explain the solar comment please. I also don't know anything about solar so if considering this boat, it would be good to know. Which I am, considering this boat.

      @@JustinHEMI05 When solar panels are in shade they will not produce any power. If just a little part of the solar panel are in a shade it will produce very little power. And if solar panels are connected in series the whole series loose power. The fact that they put the radar dome on top of the panels show that the panels are just so they can call it solar powered. It is powered by a generator that supply the electricity. The solar panels are not doing much. But it is still a nice boat.

      The sponsor of the build wanted the roof rack for kayaks and whatnot to be put on the top. You are right about the radar tower which hangs off the back of the top in Herley's next model.

    Compared to the Silent Yachts and their size this one seems to be a little bit overpriced, given the space and the number of double cabins,,,, No room for a big fridge or freezer is also an obstacle for long journes,,, Overall it seems to be solid boat and well engeneered for the electric propulsion and systems,,, Good work and finishing though especially at the helm and its positionning,,,

      The company SilentYachts gives you a very good layout for a cruiser/ liveaboard. This could have great uses as a sport-fisher preferred layout. Secondly, this cruiser is nearly there! The solar can be walked on if this company knows how to outfit the boat.

    Please help my math.. 2x 100kW motors. = 200kW. with 60kW batteries, means you can only run at 100% power for 20 minutes? (approximately) Yes, I do understand that 100% is not normal but, let's assume 50% power, so using 100kW total between 2 engines, with a 60kW batter, maybe 40 minutes? am I saying this correctly? Please correct my thinking. I realize I am most likely wrong.

    Excellent design and a job well done by Herley boat builders, a great start into electric propulsion by a NZ boat builder. However when you get into this price bracket you are coming against some very strong competition albeit that competition from my point of view would be from a sailing catamaran .. such as the Lagoon 40, NZ $899k .. the Leopard 42, NZ $1,000,000 .. Lagoon 42, NZ $1,200,000 .. 2022 Excess 12, 1,300,000 etc. Under sail there are no limitations with distance and it would have been good to see the 3400 offered with a kite option which is available on other electric catamarans.

    Really nice cat. The specs seem well thought out, but in reality this boat will still nèed lots and lots of diesel OR plenty of time in marinas on hook up. Mind you, if you can afford to spend 1.2MILLION on a boat, you can afford any moring fees or fuel bills. My 40ft cat will have 12kw motors per hull, 40kWh of LiPO4 battery per hull and 3kw of solar panels per hull. I reckon if I travel at 5knots, then the cat may be self-sustaining.......only time will tell.

      to charge the batteries when they go dead 30 miles out to sea. face it,full electric isnt feasible yet. maybe when the baterry tech and motor effeciancy come around a little more. until then,ya need a diesal something on the boat. just my opinion,but the solar panels will operate the house batteries pretty good,but a few chargers and a nice genny are a must
