  • Now that government restrictions are starting to be lifted in Italy I was delighted to have the opportunity to re-visit SILENT Yachts to update you on the construction of their amazing 80' solar electric catamaran.
    I was surprised to find that not only have they kept progressing with the progress, but they have also sold multiple new units during lockdown!

    Having owned several powerboats in the past, I have to say a quiet boat with little to no fuel costs would be the dream. There's a reason people want these things.

      @Sabar sabar What does any of this have to do with the fuel technology of a boat? Any boat of a similar size will have issues with those things. Anyways, Catamarans are more stable than boats of similar size, so if anything this will do better than many other options.

      @@Humbulla93 I do not think 3D printing will be that useful. Pretty much all 3D printed objects suffer from decreased mechanical strength when compared to same objects made using traditional techniques. Of course, with 3D printing you can optimise struts and the shape to be better and thus more sturdy, something what you sometimes are simply unable to do with traditional manufacturing. But if you were able to get the same shape with traditional methods, it would be stronger.

      @@TheBlobik 3D printing can definitely be used for constructing the molds/plugs. Though it will be a few years (10-15) before we get 3D printing to the point where entire boat hulls can be popped out.

      @Andris Falks you talk about batteries, yes, the productioni pollutes the environment. Have you thought about, how much fuel and the generation of fuel pollutes the environment? I drove with my Tesla 40.000 km last year, I produced with solar panels all the power myself. For this amount of km a conventional car would have needed about 5.000 liters of fuel. TO produce and to ship this amount of fuel requires about the same amount of fuel. What do you think, what pollutes the environment more - 10.000 liters fuel per year during 10 years =100.000 liters of fuel or some solar panels and some batteries - that last 20+ years and can be to about 90% recycled. Can burnt fuel be recycled?

    • @gregb7353
      @gregb7353 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Andris Falks Your pollution point has been thoroughly debunked and is just propaganda put out by those with an interest in electric cars failing. The specific study you probably read compared cradle to grave of an EV against gas without considering the pollution of building the gas car. They also assumed the EV would only have a lifespan of 100k miles which is obviously wrong as Tesla's are some of the higher mileage cars on the road. Obliviously on the car side EVs are going to win and pretty much everyone in the industry at this point has come to the same conclusion with all of them building EVs.
      While electric propulsion does have scaling issues on yachts not matter how much money you have, if you have enough money they can certainly perform very well in the majority of situations. Sure you could do the same for less money in a diesel yacht but part of the luxury you are paying for is not needing generators running at all why on the hook. If you are bouncing around island groups you might not ever need it except for longer passages.

The interior is much lighter, although that overly grainy wood is nasty, yet comforting. Wooow, simply an amazing piece of engineering and people making it with a clear vision! It takes one man/woman to make a huge difference.
    To me, these new types of boats feel like Tesla. I am really eager to see what is going to happen after Tesla battery day in September 2020 and hope for a huge and a quick push towards to green and sustainable energy with the new battery technology, not to mention the continuous development in solar panels.
    Imagine, if the new battery is lighter, stores more energy, low degradation and cheaper to make in combination with more efficient, flexible and cheaper solar panels where you could even fit them onto more parts of the boat or additionally roll some more of them in and out for more charging power when stationary.
    All together with nearly no maintenance.
    Any gas-powered boat will feel like a hungry dinosaurs :).
    Lets see in 3 years from now.

    The 3-deck owner's penthouse version is my favorite (layout shown on their website). They are likely to dominate the whole day-trip market segment with these, both for people who agree with the virtues, and those who want to control operating expenses. Free fuel and no diesel engine maintenance cuts out 2 of the biggest expenses.
    I'm a little surprised they haven't incorporated a wind-turbine system as well. Maybe the new "silent" vertical wind generators still aren't silent enough, but that could add a lot of recharge power to go longer/faster. We know that wind-powered boats can cover a lot of range in a day, as thousands of years of sailing has already shown :)

    • @BlaBla-pf8mf
      @BlaBla-pf8mf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That version looks huge. I'm curious how effectively solar panels can move it.

    • @jarkkoaitti287
      @jarkkoaitti287 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the world touring "energy observer" had vertical wind generators but changed those to retractable wing sails. You could also make (never seen, just had an idea:-) foldable helical wind generator quite easily. Those could be useful in windy cloudy anchor situations or when moving other than upwind..

    • @gregb7353
      @gregb7353 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Daver G I'm don't take issue with any of your calculations but I do with your conclusion. You simply can't compare HP between a diesel and electric motor and get any understanding of how it will perform. You have to pair each motor up with a prop that matches it's torque. Electric drives are 95% efficient where diesel is only 40% at best considering the torque curve is a lot harder to pair with a prop while an electric motor has a flat torque curve.

    • @gregb7353
      @gregb7353 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've yet to find a wind solution that isn't noisy. All the vertical solutions have failed in the market. I still think it's possible but more engineering is needed I guess.

    I wish It would have more Solar panels and batteries for a continuous transatlantic passage. Or at least some solar panels in the back that could be able to pivot and use them as a sale in windy conditions, when the wind blows from rear. Or some other way to also use the wind somehow for long passages.

    Silent Yachts are really amazing,
    For the Video about the power system I'd like to see some numbers about the running costs. Estimating the savings for fuel is probably pretty easy. But how much cheaper is an electric yacht in the maintenance?

    • @Scdouglas
      @Scdouglas 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      If I remember correctly the founder of the company said the motors themselves need a replacement bearing after 20,000 operating hours. I haven't heard anything about the batteries but judging by the reliability of something like a Tesla's batteries I'd say they're probably good to go for years. We'll have to wait and see how the reliability of the boat's systems are over time though as that will probably come down to a quality assurance issue rather than parts.

    • @user-dy2qq5wh4b
      @user-dy2qq5wh4b 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      the maintenance is extremely minimal. It is said that 20% of ones time is spent on maintenance when sailing, these are more like 1%. Maybe Washing the decks down?

    • @HenHen5000
      @HenHen5000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@user-dy2qq5wh4b There are probably more systems that need regular maintenance besides the engines. (Watermaker, etc.) And you need to paint the hull below the water line with antifouling. The engine maintenance is just one part of the overall maintenance, but I don't know how big this part is compared to the rest.
